2019 Preston Division 2 Semi-Final: Alex Shuttleworth vs Bethany Ellis

Спорт

Each year our league runs a singles competition open to players who play for teams in the same division. Players usually play round robin in groups of 4. The winner of the group progresses to the next round where it becomes knockout format all the way to the final.
This is the semi-final between 11 year old Bethany Ellis who is currently ranked 5 in the England Girls U13's and Alex Shuttleworth.
It's great to see two young players competing in the semi-final of this competition and a sign that youth is prospering in Preston. Beth trains at Preston and Garstang Table Tennis Club. Beth plays for Preston Colts - our league's feeder team for youngsters from our coaching sessions in to league play and Trimpell Dragons in the Lancaster Morecambe league. Beth is a member of the England Hopes Squad. Beth is sponsored by Tees Sports.
Alex went in to this event as the number 1 seed and plays for Jacobaeus B. Alex has a league win average of 98.15%. In 2015 Alex also reached the semi-final of this event and you can see that match also on our KZread channel.

Nice play from both sides. Good attitude. I see both players wanting to play forehand attacks while in a backhand position. I'm sure the forehand attack would improve with the right (so the left) foot forward.

Beautiful play by both of the players. Bethany's backhand is really fantastic and Alex's backspin is really good. Really enjoyed the match. But one thing I personally didn't like is the non sportsman attitude of Alex during the match. I hope this will be improved in future and he will be a great player one day.
