2019 KTM 500 EXC- Dirt Bike Magazine

Спорт

The KTM 500 is the closest thing to a 450 dual-sport that KTM offers in its regular line up. There is a limited-edition Six-Days 450EXC that comes out each fall, but it’s hard to find and generally expensive. It has basically the chassis of the 500EXC with the motor of the Husky FE450. The motor in the 500 is similar to the 450s in the combined KTM/Husqvarna line, but gets its additional displacement thanks to a 72mm stroke; 8.6mm longer than the 450’s.
The one design element that’s most significant for the KTM is the use of PDS rear suspension. That eliminates the shock linkage and increases ground clearance. KTM also has completely different bodywork from the Husqvarna. Many of its components are different, too. It has a Nekken handlebar, Brembo brakes, Brembo clutch hydraulics and Excel rims. The aluminum subframe and the airbox are separated, but the bike uses the reed-valve in the airboot, just like the Husky.

Jake Hynds Actually the funny thing is, i have a cr80 and I’m want to get a 450, this is because my 2 stroke is just too loud, and people find the noise annoying. I know the 450 is loud but it sounds a bit more like a car at low rpm. Also it’s nice to not have to mix fuel and have way better fuel efficiency.

I love my 2019 KTM 500 EXC F :) I did test ride a one year old 2017 KTM 300 EXC 2 stroke but I found it lacking in power at both low and high RPM compared to my old Yamaha WR450 f so I did go for the 500 and I have not regret that this far :) It feels just as light as the 300 2 stroke but with lot more power, but it seems to have a bit more of gyro effect and unlike the 2 stroke 300 it has a bit of vibrations but that is expected and it is lot less then on my old WR450. Also I have not once had the engine stall on me, my old Yamaha WR450 I would stall all the time and it was very annoying when going offroad.

Good way to put it :) It is a gentle beast lol. Easy to handle if you are easy on the throttle and when you give it all you got the horror stories I have heard about the old KX500 and CR 500 2 strokes comes to mind lol. I did get a few surprise power wheelies in the beginning even at highway speeds on tarmac when I was to heavy on the throttle right after breaking it in :)

When I was in my teens, I had a Yamaha IT175. That thing weighed about 215 lbs. This thing is only 20 lbs heavier. That's amazing. I'm now riding a Suzuki DR650 which has similar power (exhaust and jetting changed) to the KTM 500 (ok, a little less) but it weighs about 330 lbs. I can hardly imagine dropping nearly 100 lbs and keeping that power.

Love my 2015! 8700 trouble free miles. My longest ride was a bit over 2000 miles of about 50/50 hwy/off road. Decent range with a 4.1 gallon tank. My biggest issue with it is the seat! I switched to my 500 from a 690 that I rode across Africa, Europe and the UK. It was just too heavy with the Rally setup.

Love my 2016 500 exc too! Have a lot of bikes in my stable but just can't let my 500 go! It does everything so well and is so light and nimble off road! Have had zero issues with it. The suspension is smooth over all terrain. There were many times on this bike where I though I was going to wreck on this bike off road such as a deep mud hole followed by a log crossing but this bike would get through it with ease. It is great riding a bike that is better than my riding ability! It has saved me many times when I should have ate some dirt!

Of my 40 years of riding and racing on and off road, the 500 is my all around favorite! It’s the only bike quite capable of doing everything and doing it well! Ive motocrossed, Hare Scrambles, single track, mountain climbed, ice raced and have made a couple of long distance trips! No other bike that I know of can do all of this, let alone weigh in at 250lbs. BTW, I have Supermoto, Haan Cush drive Enduro wheels and ice picked stock Enduro wheels for it that I can swap out in a few minutes! I’ve thought about looking at the new 790 and Yamaha’s Tenere, but they too are too heavy, so I’m sticking with my 500.

It looks like home because I've always been very straightforward with my MTB gear and the 500F seems the same. I ride long, carry a lot on my back, beat the hell out of stuff, and go forever pretty much every day I can. I know "the feel" doesn't mean much in the face of use, but, man, that thing was a damned body glove to me. I sunk right in. That means my moto friends are right, dammit. It is a bit more heavy and sadly here in Norway the Yamaha WR450 F cost 30% more then the KTM 500 if you want it road legal with plates... I did go for a 2019 KTM 500 EXC F myself and I must say it is a lot better in every way than my old WR450. I don`t know how the new WR450 is but as far as I know they are still more heavy.

Need to rip the end cap screen off, remove the evap canister and add a bit of voltage to the TPS setting. My 2015 with 400 hours ran stronger with these minor mods than a 2019 I test rode. I do chuckle about the myth of maintenance and repair. Unless you consider changing the oil and filters and seasonal valves checks overly onerous. Wear items like chain, sprockets, brake pads wheel bearings are the same as any bike ridden off road. My motor is all original including the clutch. I've replaced the clutch rubber dampers about every 100 hours, maybe a 30 min job, same as valve check and requires no special tools or skills. KTM being lazy and not putting the rim locks in for 2019 is weak. Just put it in and add 3.5 oz opposite of the rim lock (rear) and 3 oz opposite for the front.

I work at a KTM dealer so I can vouch for you, these bikes are so fucking lazy haha. What sucks about buying them is you need to do work after buying them, sucks about emissions sadly.(however when you put in the work it will blow your arms off, which is hard to admit since i am a diehard two stroke guy) I agree with you on them being lazy for not putting in the rimlocks aswell

@mld Point is that the full performance that ktm made it to be is governed by so many different components. When you buy a rmz450 you get the full performance suzuki made it to be, when you buy a exc 300 tpi you get the full performance that ktm released it as, that is my point. Ofc most bikes need parts like protection etc, but thats not my point.

  • @klecooaleksander4332

    @klecooaleksander4332

@mld the carb and tpi have the same performance, just different traits really. The four strokes are just governed in many different places. In the TPI's there is only a governor which is an o2 sensor on a heavily restricted pipe. The four stroke has different cdi, exhaust governings, etc. As far as rottweiler intake on your 1090r go for it ;)

@mldbasically most of the stuff that has to do with fuel/air/the brain has something to do with the leanness of it. Like aaaall of it, thats how new ktms are sadly because of Europe :(. I agree with you that maintenance is harder now yes haha, the insides of the engines are the same but all the sensors etc make getting to the engine harder

I did test drive a 2017 KTM 300 2 stroke and it did not even kick the ass of my old Yamaha WR450 F so I did buy a 2019 KTM 500 EXC F. The 500 is indeed a lot more powerful at both low end and at top RPM, it is at about same weight and feels just as light as the 300 2T (but have more gyro effect when turning). The 300 will kick its ass under some conditions like tight turns at speed but when it comes to pure power then the 500 wins so it depends where you ride... Ideally I would like to have both as the 300 2 stroke is fun to ride and has its advantages like no vibrations at all (for 2016 and later models) :) What I really want is a 500 2 stroke as I am addicted to power even if that is so much power that it is to much ;)

@mld I did try full throttle trough the whole power band in different gears when testing, not my first time on a 2 smoker... I used to own a old Kawasaki KX125 2 stroke dirt bike for a short time and also a Yamaha DT125 2 stroke. The Yamaha that had the most annoyingly small power band from 9500 to 10500 RPM... Many other who have tested the 300 2 stroke and that are used to 450 and 500 4 stroke full power enduro bikes say the same as me that the 300 has less power even when in the middle of the power band. I did like the 2 stroke feeling you get when hitting the power band but it was not enough. I simply wanted more, much more ;) I think I would have need a 450 or 500 2 stroke to be happy lol :)

Been a 2 stroke rider since the late 70s... both dirt and street. Love the noise and smell and eratic ride of them. Then. While looking for a decent 2 sttoke 125 or 250 to ride with my son(cr85). I found a rmz250 and 450 from.a sponsored rider. I bought his raced 3x's rmz450. Pulled like a diesel. I loved it. It wasn't a 2stroke but it sure was fun..when I chugged up a long steep loose gravel hill I was amazed. A 2stroke would have had a bit more trouble getting up it. ..
