2019 KTM 250 EXC TPI- RK Tek Head Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I received an RK Tek head for test and review on my 2019 KTM 250 EXC TPI. Once installed the result was a noticeable increase in power and torque across the rpm range making the bike easy to ride. No changes were made to fueling for the testing.

It is interesting to see the profile of the rk tech head is more similar to 16 and back style heads.

So interesting that the spark plug shows that your tpi bike is running rich. I am looking at getting a tpi bike an was concerned that they were running lean and hot. With reports of cylinder damage. Looks like KTM may have the technology right. Thanks for your videos very interesting.

Awesome review as usual. I have a 2021 250XC TPI and love it but want more low end grunt like the 300 but without the feeling of being heavier. Im considering trying this.

Did you ever try the head? I'm considering the same, just not sure about not altering the stock ECU long term. Some people say it's fine, but I don't want to blow the bike up.

@@moonzy11 Thanks for the reply. I'm definitely going to give it a try this season. I just want that extra power when trying to carry 4th gear on our fast flowing single track. Other than that I love the 250 engine performance. I went with a G2 throttle tamer to help manage the power In the tight stuff. Worked amazing managing the arm pump during races.

It would be better to try the performance change on the bench, not while driving. With other similar products the increase was negligible.

How would you rate the increase in power/torque of the RK-Tek on the TPI vs the RK-Tek on the carbed bike? Is it comparable or does the more variable fueling (aka jetting) on the carbed bike allow the RK-Tek to show its full potential? Thanks for the great videos!!!

  • @TokyoOffroad

I think the gain is similar. But as I eluded to in the video, I don’t think I’ll be able to extract the full potential of the head until I have a custom ECU fitted.

on my exc tpi, im just scheme the head about 0.5mm at machine shop and now i got great low end power and running 95 octane fuel without knocking issue.. save a lot of money than buying rk tek but got the same performance at about 10$ for scheme...

Kamarudin Mohd Piah - Yes, skimming the head is a way to increase the compression, but you’re still left with the stock combustion chamber shape. As shown in the video the RK Tek has a completely different head shape design with a clearly defined squish band. Performance of the RK Tek head is excellent.

Where i live, elevation is 3100 feet, would standard compression test be substantially lower in a new recent top end done on 300 xc, it was 160, going to shave 25 thousands, should help at higher elevation

My garage is probably only about 100ft above sea level so no compensation factor is required for my compression test results. Your 160psi compression test result at 3,100ft would be approximately 176psi at sea level which sounds about right for a stock engine.

Typically you'd want to jet a little richer if your jetting is currently spot on. To get an idea for a good starting point it would be a good idea to get feedback from other owners with the same set-up as you, or contact RK Tek for advice.

I don't have any experience of using a 300 TPI map with a 250 TPI. The Map is different, but I do not know the details of what is different. I would not recommend doing this. It would be best just to remap the ECU to the 300 map when you fit the 300 kit...

Seth Jeffreys This is off they’re website, again it’s marketing speak but I have only found good things about Rk myself and ordering one, but when you have mass produced components like this it is less efficient and that is more an issue for longevity, many OEM parts are often better, but in some cases like this with everything else tuned correctly esp with a Carb it’s easy messed up by the consumer, not the performance part. The Stock 250 & 300 head (especially 2014 and newer) is a VERY inefficient design and leaves A LOT of Performance on the table. We have developed a TRUE Performance Enhancer with this Custom Billet Head designed specifically for mountains and single/dual track riding. This head will widen the engine's effective power-band considerably and allow for a much more linear power delivery. “This head is unequaled in its performance. Cooling is also increased. A cooler running engine will last longer and produce more power.” Testing has shown, in many cases, this head allows for the hill to be pulled in the next higher gear . What you would normally pull in 2nd gear you can now pull in 3rd gear. Porting Packages are also available. This will wake up the engine even more! ANOTHER HUGE bonus with the addition of the head is improved fuel economy! Most find they can run an extra 10-20 miles further on the same amount of fuel!! Now who doesn't need that???

For my 2017 KTM 250 EXC (using a high compression head) I did my first top end overhaul at 145H and the piston, rings and cylinder all looked in really good shape. I could have probably pushed the interval out to 200H, but top end rebuild kits are cheap and easy to install, so I’d rather keep the engine fresh. My expectation is that my TPI will be similar as it’s basically the same engine. Note that if you race and ride the bike very hard you should reduce the overhaul interval.

I haven't ridden a 300TPI so don't know how my 250TPI compares to that. I've ridden 4 different carb model 300s though. The 300s always feel flat on top to me, so the 250TPI feels a lot more lively from mid to top. The low end the 300 has more for sure, but I'm hoping that a custom ECU will improve that.

When you order a head from RK Tek they ask you what octane fuel you will be using and also the elevation you run at. Based on this information they then supply a head which they think will work best for you.
