One point not mentioned is that Kia is playing a long game. All manufacturers understand that if they can capture a first time buyer, that consumer is more likely to stick with the brand when they "move up" to more expensive vehicles. So the Forte is important not only as a percentage of overall sales, it's a critical vehicle for bringing younger and first time buyers to the brand. So what's important to that market segment? Independent rear suspension? Gimme a break. As long as the car doesn't ride like a buckboard in normal driving, they're happy. A manual transmission? Unless Kia wants to see vehicles sitting on dealer lots for months before they're heavily discounted, a stick option, especially in upper trims, is a non-starter. An 8/9/10 speed automatic versus a DCT or a CVT? Might matter to a few (it does to me) but as long as it's a reasonable automatic transmission it's good. And if a the transmission choice adds, say, $1500 to the price it's a big negative. So what IS important? Good looks, upscale interiors, and features. Check mark for Kia. Purchase price. For first time buyers (or their parents) a price difference of, say, $2000 can be a deal breaker. Kia is no longer a "bargain" brand, but it's competitive and generally offers more for the dollar than its rivals. Another check mark. Performance? Needs to be "peppy" but anything that can go from 0-60 in eight seconds will meet that requirement. Check Mark. Durability/reliability? Kia has gone from terrible to nearly Toyota level in the last few years. And that 10K/5K warranty is very reassuring. Check. Fuel efficiency. This has traditionally been a problem for KIA. So getting that magic "40 mpg" on the highway is a very big deal. From a marketing perspective the difference between 39 and 40 mpg is MUCH more important than that between, say, 38 and 39 mpg. Just as the difference between 25K and 27K is a big deal for budget conscious buyers. Of course real world mileage generally won't meet that 40 mpg goal, but it's an important figure on the Moroney sticker in the showroom. The Forte is not going to outsell the Corolla or the Civic. But it's worth noting that as sedan sales have (and continue to) slip, the Forte has suffered less than most. Whether the redesigned 2019 model can reverse that trend is unknown but whatever the result, those who purchase the Forte are likely to consider the brand as they replace those vehicles. And that's good news for Kia.

Stephen Hendricks well said, and well thought out. As a marketeer myself, your observations are spot on. It was a bit strange to suggest that Kia should have put their 8 speed tranny in this car. No car in this class has a transmission that resides in their upper level cars. Honda and Toyota get by with the CVT and people love the fuel economy. Why should anyone complain about Kia doing it? This car is WAYYYY cooler than the Civic or the boring Corolla.

Just baught a 2019 Kia Fote S. I had a Kia Forte 2016 LX. I can't tell you how IMPRESSED I am not only with my older Kia , but also the 2019 S. The options I got on this 2019 S is impressive , the speed at a punch of the gas pedal is impressive, the ride is impressive, but not as smoothe as my 2016 LX, I think because of back end not being independent and also the taller more low profile than the Khumo touring tire I had on the 2016, although the 2019 S is still a great ride feel, just not as smoothe going over bumps . I am somewhat skeptical of the forward warning system, I have come up fast behind other vehicles and got very close, no automatic pressure on the breaks ? Maybe I am not knowledgeable on how the system works , but I've tried several times to get it to work and nothing, and yes everything was checked on with the shortest time selected for the warning ... so maybe I need to read up more about the system. But so far I am very happy with the car, and can I just say WARRANTY ! Enough said there 😊 So far so good , love this car as much as my 2016 lx

It would make an interesting conversation. About the new Forte: it looks good but I think the only version I would consider over it's new car competition at similar MSRP would be the base with the manual transmission. At that I would wait until discounts are available to get a couple thousand off of MSRP even if that is two or four years away.

I bought a new 2017 Forte 5. It currently has 11k miles as my daily driver. 6 speed AUTO and it stays steady at 38mpg average with a normal foot. Light foot under 50mph it is 40mpg. Most I have ever had is 36mpg if I drive it like I stole it. So i'm still not sure why we need a CVT? I do love the way the new 2019 looks especially in red but I still want the Forte 5 version. My g/f bought the exact same car when I bought mine and she is getting the exact same mpg btw.

  • @TheMirageowner
    @TheMirageowner5 жыл бұрын

I would buy a new Forte (mid range level) with no hesitation. I would love to have manual in that configuration but I know I am in a decreasingly smaller focus group. As far as a CVT goes, I currently have one in my daily driver. For most monotonous commuting duties, it is fine and unobtrusive. The problem lies in heavy acceleration as the engine drone does not match the increase in speed. My car is a 2011 model for reference and currently well over 115k mileage with no CVT issues. I do know that CVT's are better now and with some crafty tuning (or a proper launch gear ala Toyota) will probably mimic a traditional automatic for most circumstances. I do agree that CVTs are less expensive to produce and help the companies meet their MPG targets despite the fact that most modern automatics are exceptionally well tuned and efficient. (The well regarded ZF 8speed can be applied to as low as about 160hp to well over 500hp applications. It is reliable, smooth and versatile. The irony of modern CVTs is that there are "shift points" to mimic a perfectly fine traditional automatic. But CVTs has become the new normal.

Well kia dealer near me heard me out, offered the most for my truck with some negative equity. Couldn't get around it. And today I'll be picking up my 2019 kia forte, 6 speed. For a base it has what I need. Could I have more bells and whistles, sure. But for now I'm getting way better mpg, enough tech, and a 6 speed. Kinda cool looking 2. We still get the 6-speed auto in the 2019 Kia Cerato (Forte) here in Oz (only a small fuel penalty over the CVT). I'd rather have the torque-converter auto than a CVT. In fact, the Kia Cerato hatch is the car that I am seriously considering buying this year, I just have to decide whether I want to continue driving a manual or go with the auto this time around.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION all the way ! looking to upgrade from 2009 ford fusion with 5 speed manual - Why does no one do an actual drive test with a manual transmission? I will NOT buy a car with an automatic (hence no fusion though it has been a great car). Road safety and control in snow is WAAAYYY better in a manual transmission. Hard to text when you are actually driving a car. Both my kids learned to drive manual transmissions, and both manual cars have > 200,000 kms with no clutch issues. Drove the 6 speed manual Forte - was nice and smooth, and had adequate power, agree had to rev it a bit to get max power. Will be buying manual transmission Forte within the next year. Sadly Kia Soul no longer comes with manual transmission, as did wife's 2011 Soul.

It's really interesting that the Kia Forte and Hyundai Elantra are basically 2 cosmetically different versions of the same care. Same platform. Same engine. The difference is the transmissions. So for the CVT equipped Forte to squeeze an extra 4mpg better out of the same engine as the Elantra is pretty impressive. The only time CVTs are annoying is in hard acceleration. Frankly, if you're pushing your car that hard regularly, you're treating you car rougher than you should anyway and it's going to die an earlier death than necessary.

I believe the 21$k Forte has the Harman Kardon sound system and the heated and cooled seats; the 25$k one is just gimmicks like darker alloy wheels and a useless adaptive cruise control which will stop working under 20mph. I would personally buy a 2019-2020 Forte5 with the 1.6T and hopefully 6 spd manual and independent rear suspension

Elton..I think if you're talking about high end luxury cars, there are "gimmicks" that you might not need or want. But in this class car, IMO, the top model is worth every penny. I enjoy the niceties like ventilated seats, premium audio, power lumbar, heated wheel etc. Personally, I would rather max out a smaller car than have the base model of a bigger car.

So, Kia put a CVT (which they have historically encouraged their own sales people to crap on when it's somebody else's CVT) in their economy car to get better economy but it doesn't actually get better economy because the old 6-speed automatic did just as well in actual driving..... ? Like, I've driven one averaging 32-35mpg in a town with God awful traffic and managed to hit that 40ish highway without issue. So, yeah... I'm struggling to see why that was necessary

I used to have a Forte a few years ago. Bought it new, it was the 2nd highest trim (had everything but leather seats, push-button ignition & the "17 dubs). I liked it a lot, it was fun to drive, reliable, attractive, comfortable & spacious, but it had a bad gas mileage, like comically bad. I don't remember the MPG, but it consumed more fuel than our '03 Ford Explorer. 1.6L 4 pot drank the 4.0L V6 under the table lol. As much as I loved that car, I'll never ever buy another Kia, I think I told you about this, M. Anyway. I'd pick a used car instead. Depending on what's on the market ... You know where I'm going with this 🤣 As always, excellent work, M.

Yup Motoman, they could have reached into Hyundai's parts bin of the Veloster dual clutch 7 speed for the fuel economy. Double wishbone rear independent suspension would be nice. And why was the 2.0 so low in power output? Civic 1.6T has more power and torque and better mpg. Only one answer, lousy engineering and design.

I just bought a lightly used (7,900 miles) 2021 Forte EX from Carvana. Will be delivered in three days. It pretty much has everything I want in a less expensive package. The 8-way power driver's seat with lumbar support, ventilated seats and Harman Kardon premium audio did it for me. The super long warranty is another plus. It literally has everything a top trim midsize sedan from any manufacturer has for $10,000 to $15,000 less. The CVT is a non-issue. Every reviewer (save for you) that I've seen talking about any Hyundai or Kia model that uses it say its the best out there. I have no concerns about it at all.

Most people here seem to drive normal cars. 99,99% of the people watching content with GT3's, M3's etc just watch it because the like the cars. Not because they actually want to buy it and is looking for consumer advice. So I bet ya a lot of your viewers do care about fuel economy. Especially us outside the USA, with high taxation of fuel.

A range topping Forte (5) GT limited with the turbo 1.6L engine is a whopping $38,000 OTD here in Canada. I can find a lightly used 2008 Kia Stinger Limited (GT2 in States) for that much. Kia's drunk on their own koolaid if they think I'm going to pay that for a Forte. Still rocking the 2014 Forte5 SX with the turbo engine. Still a strong car and motor. I am NOT paying Stinger money for a Forte. Get real! When my Forte gives up the ghost, I'll likely look at what the used market has for the Stinger or even this Forte.

  • @shawnlee664

2019 forte looks "too fast" for a CVT. If you are a "baby" stinger, you've got to have the N performance specs: 2 litter turbo 275 hp but with 7 gear DCT. What was kia thinking? Make it look fast but make it go slow saving gas? Make me the marketing head and I will double the sales and make Honda join Renault.

I recently drove the new Forte and was somewhat shocked at how bad it was. The steering is horribly overboosted to the point of being unsafe. The damping on the car was absolutely terrible. The car was extremely harsh on broken pavement, I'm talking total deal-breaker harsh. The CVT was typical, meaning it sucked. I've seen this car reviewed by several channels and it really makes me wonder how truthful these channels feel they can be. Are they in fear of not getting anymore cars from the manufacturer? The Forte is not competitive with the leaders in this segment, Mazda 3, Civic, Golf, new Corolla, not even close.

There are two major reasons OEMs go the CVT route: 1.) Hit fuel economy targets. This benefits both them and the buyer. 2.) Less publicized: They are MUCH cheaper to produce because they are less complex. Less moving parts. Nissan has been able to undercut most of their competition on price for YEARS because they have deployed the CVT in most of the serial production cars.
