Got one new in 2019. Now at 66,150 KM and running like when she was new. 5 back tires, 3 front one, 14 oil change, new brake pad front and rear at around 45,000 km. spark plugs changed at 25,000 and 50,000 KM. Valve adjusted at 25 and 50,000 km Nothing to do at the first valve adjustment and only 1 shim to change at the 2nd one. Amsoil synthetic every oil change starting at 5,000 KM (first one at 2,000 KM using Kawasaki mineral oil) New battery at around 54,000 KM Chain and sprocket changed at 30,000 and 52,000 KM. 0 problem. Nothing. Start EVERY morning. The most reliable bike I ever owned in 42 years of riding.

Nice review except for the “it's only for new riders”. What about the old man that has ridden all types of bikes for 50 years and wants a small bike to blast around on. Can't take a 600 to redline, in the first 3 gears, without putting your license in jeopardy. It’s more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow. Right now they are discounted in CA, I think I will get one.

Same for me. I’m 60 and looking at one of these because of its size. Current bike is a 2001 zx6r with a Corbin seat and super bike bars. Had it since new. This bike looks like just the ticket for riding back roads. Although the rumors of a in-line 4 cyl 400 from Kawasaki has me hesitant. That and the current z650RS.

One thing about these so-called entry-level bikes. They make most excellent second bikes for seasoned riders. Like me.

Nice video but why do people call these bikes "entry-level bikes" I've been riding since I was 14, I'm now 83 & ride a Kawaski GPZ 500s, which is plenty big & fast enough at my age. Modern 400/500 cc bikes are much more than just entry-level bikes & what puts some riders off is these bikes being looked down on as "entry-level" giving them the feeling of not being "macho" Shame!

Well, I look at this from a different perspective. I would not start my wife out on a Triumph Rocket or BMW K1600GT/B for example. They are just way too big and way to heavy for her. She will always ride the smaller "entry level bikes". AND here is the point, it does not bother her to call them that either. Another example: I do not like big heavy bikes, I just don't like pushing around all that weight every time I throw my leg over it, I like to keep around the 200kg weight (or less) for an every day rider. We humans have general terms that we use to place bikes in categories. Size and weight are two very basic and simple units of measurement that we use. I do not have a problem with riding with a person that is on a 400cc bike, in fact I'll ride with any one on 2 or even 3 wheels, no matter the size of the bike. If someone has a problem with this, then that is their problem, I don't make it my problem too. There are 3 "general" categories: lightweight, middleweight & heavyweight. There are several others but these 3 are the very basic way we classify a bike. Simple. As you can see on my channel home page I classify bikes in several other ways, Naked, Adv, Classic...etc. Thank you for your comment and don't let these naming conventions bother you, just have fun and enjoy the ride. barrie Williams completely agree with you! 250s were considered entry level until they kept upping the engines so I could never call something almost twice as powerful entry level but I understand that it’s the defacto standard for entry level. I think the little Groms and Z125s is the main focus shift since they can charge what they used to for a 250 on a 125 and it just went up from there. This bike should certainly be classified as intermediate.

Another excellent video. Professional, clear, interesting. Viewers will certainly appreciate your frankness, especially with respect to your comments about the brakes. I understand that the single disc works okay on the Z400 (with reasonable use!). Keep these videos coming! I am curious about the location of your ride… It looks like the perfect riding landscape.

Great review👍👍 Maybe the best entry bike around. BMW G 310 R I've heard has a lot of vibration in the higher revs.

As always, I like the way you did the review, calm and relaxed. But I think you could've said why are you leaning toward the KTM 390 Duke, why would you rather pick that bike? You could've said more. And please don't take this as negative criticism. Thank you for the video.

Hi Scott, I enjoy most of your reviews. But I’d also like to get your take on non new bikes or classic bikes. I’d love to hear what you have to say about bikes like a Ducati 996, BMW R75/5, Moto Guzzi Le Mans etc, early R1. I know it would be more difficult sourcing these bikes but they would be a nice change. Maybe even some of your subscribers might loan you their bikes or even do on screen chats with you about the bike. I’m a 60 yo subscriber and I imagine older subscribers would enjoy your relaxed approach, as I do. 😊

often I wish manufacturers would make small displacement motorcycles, but with high quality parts. When I switch from an expensive 100HP+ machine to A2 or below motorcycles, the thing I mist most is the overal quality of the ride (electronics, suspension, screen etc.) instead of wanting more power. These bikes are a lot of fun I'd love to have one but with some quality parts because they often feel like the engine is a lot of fun to rev and goof around on but the bike itself feels like a piece of plastic..

I 'm not an entery level rider, i'm 78 and want a lighter bike and one easier to swing my leg over. Might weait for the z z400RS WITH the flater seat.

Hi Scott, thanks for your great review, very professional. I’m looking both at the Duke 390 and the Z400 as the first street bike for my wife; she has a couple of years of experience riding Enduro on her Kawasaki KLX140G, that she can flat-foot, so I’m guessing that seat height should not be an issue either the Duke 390 or the Z400. On your video you mention you are also looking at an entry level bike for your wife and that you would probably lean towards the Duke 390. Electronics aside (where the Duke 390 wins easily), what other aspects make you prefer the Duke to the Z400? We live in Panama (Central America) and roads tend to be quite bumpy…between the Duke and the Z, which bike would make for a smoother ride? Thanks and take care, Alessandro

Thank you Alessandro, The 390 has premium parts (brakes/suspension/frame/display) that are much better than the Z. And, at least here in Germany, the Z costs more than the 390 by about 700. Also the 390 torque is low in the RPM rev range as compared to the Z, it's way up high, so the 390 is a little more street-able and easier to ride at normal "street" speeds. Less shifting, less reeving, just more power down low but not as smooth as the Z. Looks wise, I'd take the Z over the 390 any day, the 390 is just ugly, imho. But when you're on the bike you can't see it...LOL! Ride safe, Scott

Been waiting since April. BMW is having some problems with production of the crank case... sigh. The few, lucky people that have taken delivery of one put in their orders last winter. This will probably delay the update of the S1000R and XR too...next year...I'm bummed.

I've been looking at this size/class of bike as a second motorcycle for solo rides. The main contenders are the Honda CB300R and Yamaha MT03...I like the looks of the KTM Duke 390 but have heard some concerning things about overheating issues. Maybe you can comment on that...also, if I remember correctly I seem to remember the Duke having a more aggressive seating position.

Well, I've "heard" about KTM's being unreliable but I've never experienced it personally (my 1290SDR, 4 years and 22k no problems what's so ever) nor do I know of any one that has had problems with them, so I think that there are a few horror stories out there about KTM that get blown out of proportion because of social media cause "bad news" gets more clicks than good news. Also 390's still are abused on track days and then these guys sell them to unsuspecting guys that don't have a clue and then they have problems with the bike. I have personally watched this process when I was doing track days in the States. They justify doing this with the good old statement: "buyer beware!" Sad, just sad. So if you are buying a used Duke, "beware" but if it's new, then no problem. :) Oh and as far as riding position, they are all very close to each other. Ride safe, Scott

@@scotteger6271 don't buy KTM, I had Duke 200 as my firs bike(just several months ago), the ABS failed on me and the dashboard/warning light didn't even came on, so I had no idea I had no ABS, I had a massive crash because of it, I'm lucky to be alive and have a bad knee injury (Still cant walk normally), only after that I found out that All KTM bikes are Notorious for their HIGH Unreliability especially Duke 200 and Duke 390 which made in India. Don't risk your life because of looks. If you don't want to and up in the bushes or spent rest of your time at KTM dealership choose something else

@@c318i I looked at the 390 and the 200...the seat on the 390 was awful and the 200 wasn't for me. We ended up getting a Honda ADV150 scooter for around town and we have a 2018 Triumph Bonneville T120 for longer rides

Oh, both are good "first bike" buys. I think I'd lean more towards the SV650, you won't grow out of it as fast as the Z400. And the SV650 is about 500 more than the Z400 here in Germany. 👍

For what it's worth, I have a 2023 Z400 and fortunately it doesn't have the whine that you hear in this video. It's a great bike. I call it Mighty Mouse because it performs better than I expected!

The 390 duke is somewhat nervous. With the availability of some other alternative options I think there are better starters motorcycles!

Hi Elie, The 390 Duke is the most solid/stable platform in a corner/braking I've ever ridden. Bar none. KTM took the frame from the Moto GP winning 2500cc frame and put it into the RC390 and 390 Duke and is still there today. It works and is/was at the top level of racing, little alone street level. Please be careful when you make a blanket statement on my channel about a bike, I will ask you to back it up. Especially when I have experienced and have the facts that say the opposite of what you are saying with your statement. Please educate me, if I am wrong I will admit it and discuss it with you and come to a mutual understanding/agreement and I will apologise to you personally, here on this channel. @@NothingToProve hi. I owned the 390 duke and I can tell that it always wanted to be thrashed. It has serious power/character for a beginner rider who may be enticed to give it the beans while he hasn't developed the appropriate skills. That motorcycle is a blast to ride and I sold it for 2 main reasons. The first is that it feels wrong commuting on such a somewhat big single cylender engine which is Initially made and mapped to perform unlike the bajaj dominar which SHARE the same engine yet with 30+ kilos heavier. So It was not a pleasing experience whenever I wanted to have a relaxed commute because the engine was either unhappy in lower revs or wanting to be redlined once it approaches the powerband. Also I had problems with the ABS.

I wonder if the bike you bought was a "lemon", because the 2018 model that I rode last year was from an authorized KTM dealership here in Germany and I had none of the issues you had with yours. In fact I pushed the bike hard with braking/cornering/suspension and even turned the ABS off, just to see how it handled in wheel lock up situations and it was so smooth and confidence inspiring that I'd like to get it for my wife's first bike. So I'm curious, what model year was yours and from where did you get it?

I test rode the 2017 (euro 4) and was a bit more civilized than the 2016 which I ended up buying used for cheaper and is a bit lighter and more aggressive because it was not euro 4. My point is that the ktm 390 duke is a performance machine and works best when pushed. It is sensitive in what gearing is running relative to which speed it is going. The new generation is more refined but nothing can take away the character and the intention set when making it. Of course it has very good brakes and chassis that are made to handle the performance of that single cylender on a lightweight machine. It can be a first motorcycle yet there are better options out there for a beginner rider, a more forgiving ones like the BMW g310r, the dominar 400, the z300 etc. Concerning the ABS error, I am not the only one who experienced it after 10000 km. I now own a bandit 1255cc and the 390 duke is always on my mind because it is an awesome "ready to race" machine and I may end up buying another one.

Actually it's 48 for A2 license not 45. The 390 Duke is 44 and therefore the real reason Kawasaki made this 45...to beat KTM.
