2019 Honda CRF450L | First Impression

Спорт

It's impossible to overlook the rise in performance that manufacturers have accomplished with dedicated off-road motorcycles For many years bikes were heavy and outdated, with the focus aimed at reliability, but bikes like the 2019 Honda CRF450L show that brands are eager to bridge the gap between the pure power of their motocross models and the easy to ride models of their dual-sport segment. During a recent trip to the Pacific Northwest for the full intro of the new motorcycle, we learned the complete details of the street-legal 450cc machine from Honda's Jason Abbott.
The 2019 Honda CRF450L is much more than just a CRF450R with lights and a license plate. Yes, Honda took plenty of design and technology from the competition model, like the Unicam engine and twin-spar aluminum frame, but there are a number of parts and pieces that are completely unique to the CRF450L. Honda reworked the engine by dropping a three-ring piston into the cylinder, increased the mass of the crank, enclosed the airbox, configured dedicated ECU settings, bolted on a quiet exhaust system, stuffed a wide-ratio six-speed transmission and complimenting clutch pack inside, and wrapped the engine cases with plastic covers to cut down on noise. The chassis, meanwhile, was widened at the base to accommodate the larger engine-transmission, a new subframe was designed that extends all the way to the tip of the rear fender, the Showa suspension was tuned to take on obstacles one will see on the trail, and the necessary signal lights, digital speedometer and odometer, and assorted pieces were put into place.

    I just don't see a reason to "settle" on this. Once we are talking over $10,000, might as well start looking at KTMs, Tigers, BMWs, etc. The weight is nearly 300 lb. That puts it close enough to the KTM 690 Enduro R. Well, the KTM is cheaper, has a bigger gas tank, nearly 2x the horsepower, and killer suspension. Sorry, Honda, but your price point has us looking at REAL dual sport bikes. You already have a winner with the 650L. Just modernize that dinosaur and shave 40 lb off that steel frame.

    I hear ya. Spring 2018 I was on my way to look at a Craigslist 650L and my buddy found a 2004 KTM 625 SXC in the same area. I didn't know that bike even existed, or anything else in that family like the 640. We were able to make contact and meet the guy immediately. Test riding, I don't think I even got out of 1st gear before I knew the KTM was going to be mine. Never felt such a smooth, constant acceleration. It was a no brainer. Roughly the same price but 40 lbs less. Hopefully Honda will update the 650L next. They updated the 250L, created a 450L, … the 650L would be logical. If I remember right, the 650R was ~300 lb, so we know Honda can do it.

    Well, yes she has almost 300 pounds but that makes here still at least 60 pounds lighter than the KTM 690 and don't forget, that though the engine has been tuned down to be more smooth and shit, it's still a 450 MX engine and those are far supperior offroad to these 690 roadbike engines.

    When was this ride? September maybe since thats the only time we have gotten any amount of rain. Where did you ride at Packwood? It's funny you say the suspension is a little soft but other guys said it was firm, or maybe I misunderstood...

    a problem I have with these bike reviews is that they tell what's good but not what's bad. ie does linear power delivery mean flat and gutless?

  • @hrbestalkinme3690

    @hrbestalkinme3690

    I agree. They wont give you the whole picture. The ones that do give you the whole picture... all stop getting invited to test ride the bikes. But nah I doubt the power is flat and gutless. This bike is making mid 40s horsepower. Which isn't fast by 450 standards, but its a fuckin fast bike! For how reliable I'm predicting this bike will be, it seems to making great power.

    Liniar is a good thing. It's not gonna feel like a mx bike. I bet it's like the ktm 500. Huge power but manageable. Not many riders want a 250 2 stroke for the street.

    @@crazyrebl but the guy has ridden bikes for years and has at least one at the moment if not more than one, so he's definitely not a rookie. I haven't ever ridden a modern 450 so I can't say for sure what it would take to loop out at that slow of speed in a parking lot approaching a group of others also test riding the same bike but it's just weird.

    What Dual-Sport? This is an all in Enduro bike with maintenance measured in hours and a high-price for sub-par performance in comparison with its competition. You guys presented all the useless info about this model and left out the important parts. What about the high maintenance costs, the non-upgradable ECU, the 7L fuel tank, the heavy weight? These sure sound like paid reviews...
