2019 Honda 450L - Dirt Bike Magazine

Спорт

This bike lit up social media when it was announced. People were equally divided between those who thought the bike was the answer to all the world’s woes and those who though it was trash on wheels. None of this was grounded in fact, it was just the internet doing what it does. The bike is loosely based on the latest version of the CRF450R motocross bike. The SOHC motor is in a very different state of tune, though, and has a six-speed gearbox. That causes the engine cases to be wider, which means the frame has to be different. It also has a number of bracket that the motocrosser doesn’t need. The suspension components, on the other hand, are identical to those of the MX bike aside from spring rates and valving. It has a fan and a rather obtrusive thermostat on the right side of the motor. The muffler has a catalyst inside and the engine is encased in plastic covers that both offer protection and dampen sound. The fuel tank itself is made of titanium and holds just over two gallons.
Honda splurged in some aspects of the bike and economized in others. On one hand it has the best headlight of the bunch; a multi element LED set-up that’s far brighter than the others. On the other, it has a ⅞” handlebar and no handguards. Also, it’s the only one without a hydraulic clutch.

Yes it's heavier and slower than the European competition, but you know it's going to have Honda reliability, plus it's a couple of grand cheaper where I live...very tempting.

What always gets me about reviews on these types of bikes is when people complain about weight. Compared to my KTM 1290 SAR the Honda 450 is light. Compare my bike to a Harley Electra Glide and my bike is a lightweight. If most of us want to remove weight from our bikes the best thing we could do is eat a little less and exercise more. Looks like a great dual sport bike to me.

So if I would get one of these, I would definitely port the head and open up the exhaust a bit so it can breathe. Then build the bottom end with a lower compression piston and then find a small turbo. Take off the heavy muffler and put on a lighter muffler and some other lightweight parts. That'll make highway stuff easier as well as for stuff requiring lots of load like a big hill or thick mud.

Andrew Imhof, I agree too. However, if someone is 50/50 street/dirt or even 40/60 this bike is a viable option. Someone like me on the other hand, into 90 percent dirt and as little road as possible to connect trails, real trails - single track preferably, I’ll take an EXC/TE/Beta any day. I’ll prefer to take a FX or Beta RE and do what it takes to Duel Sport it. Sometime I loving living in Az.

@weldingblaster1 Anyone honest knows that the KTM line has quality issues. The Honda is heavier because it comes with proper lights front and rear, that don't fall off after a month. It comes with a rad fan. The subframe is made to carry a bunch of weight on it, for years to come. Try putting a rear rack on the Husky! That plastic subframe will crack and fall off! Yes, it is heavier, but it'll last for years and the extra 15% performance I am losing doesn't bother me. The funny thing about h.p. is that the Husky/KTM 450's make less power than the Honda. Also, to rid these bikes of the lean fueling costs the same on the Honda as the KTM.

I don't see the point, it has barely enough horsepower to truly bomb down fire roads, and it's too heavy for tight trails. Jesus Christ SuperStar look people complain no matter what, L the to me isn’t a 10000 mile road tripper like the 650l and it shouldn’t be. It’s made for quick to medium adventure ride with some gear. Honda I think did the right thing and made SOMETHING because they are usually a reactionary company. It can’t be a carb 500 because emissions, and yeah it’s heavy but the people who have bought one have lightened it up decently. For the power it’s a matter of buying a écu and done. For the fuel tank a bigger one. Literally this is a problem with near all bikes because of ride weight from the factory. Where you live it’s near trail heaven on the west us, where you can can ride on public land forever. I’m in Maine, every is private property, extremely hard to get new trails in and have sweet technical section, everything is sxs trails with foot of water, sucks. So the L for me would work good ride road find trail.

Complaining that a race bred bike needs slightly more maintenance than a farm tractor of a bike, is like complaining your Lambo only has 2 seats. But it's worse because you're just replacing half as much oil, twice as often, and it only takes 5 minutes. But then i'm granting the 'L' is a race bike, which it isn't, it's a big stupid heavy cranked paperweight.
