2019 Dual Sport Shootout - Dirt Bike Magazine

Спорт

Balance is for losers. Any bike that’s “well-rounded” or has “broad appeal” is purpose built to be bad at everything. That’s been the sad truth about dual-sport bikes since the invention of the license plate.
Thankfully, there are people in key places at major motorcycle factories who have come to understand that. The new crop of dual-sport bikes has been designed with dirt as the number one priority. That was never the case in the old days, when the best we could hope for was a 320-pounder with high fenders. Now, the goal is to make a dirt bike that’s legal on the road. Unfortunately, the Feds haven’t made that easy. The regs for DOT and EPA approval are vague and subject to different interpretations. As a result, each of the companies plays by a different set of rules--some very conservative, others right on the edge. We gathered the Honda CRF450L, the Husqvarna FE450, the Beta 430RR-S and the KTM 500EXC for a battle in the dirt. They don’t exactly match in displacement, but this isn’t about a racing class. These are what we consider the four best dual-sport bikes in the world from an off-road rider’s point of view. We will let other publications talk about how well rounded they are for commuters and road riders. For us, the street portion of the test has only two questions: 1. Is it legal on the road? 2. Is it practical on the road? For all bikes, the answers are yes and yes. With our dirt-heavy emphasis, we stripped the bikes of their original tires. The Honda’s IRCs are mostly aimed at street and the Continentals on the KTM and Husky were selected to help pass sound tests. Only the Michelin Enduros on the Beta are dirt oriented, but even they have reduced knob height as required in Europe. We put all the bikes on Mitas tires, which are the most aggressive DOT knobbies we could find. If you don’t know Mitas, you might remember the firm’s parent company: Trelleborg. Then we evaluated them mostly in the dirt. For us, pavement is simply a means to connect trails.

More then happy with my 2019 KTM 500 EXC-F they all need a little additional love out the door, and that can get pricy depending on preference but ALL amazing machines for sure

Very emotional, few facts. For example, no mention of seat height or relative seat comfort or durability. No mention of actual weight, come on guys, gimme NUMBERS. No mention of maintenance requirements. No mention of fuel capacity or octane requirements. No mention of issues like frame tail section and whether its strong enough for luggage (these ARE dual sports!). This was not much of a comparison, just some feelings. I expected more from DBM.

Most of that stuff is advertised by the manufacturers, really no need to repeat it. They covered what i wanted to know. They review dirtbikes. Thats the perspective they took when assessing these bikes. They just wanted to compare the top tier dualsports on offroad riding capabilities.

Over the years I've ridden Honda, Kawi, KTM, Husky, Suzuki, and Yamahas. I still own my KLX 650 special addition that I took out today for a few hours. Not trying to brag about the bikes I've owned, I just would like to very strongly stress that anyone even thinking about throwing down serious cash for one of these should really do some research and talk to actual owners, maybe even beg one of your friends to let you try his bike. I'm only putting this out there because these reviews are very general guidelines, it all depends on what works for each person. It also depends on the difficulty of the terrain you ride the most. I'm 53 years old now and can still tear it up pretty good, but I must say that sometimes I've had more fun with the smaller cc bikes on very difficult terrain because of the handling and low weight advantages over the big bikes. The smaller bikes were easier to start, store, and seemed safer because you can really whip them around and jump them higher. My KLX 650 maxes out at about 107 mph on the road, plows heavy in the front on mushy and twisty trails, and feels like its going to break in half over high jumps. None of these dual purpose bikes are true dirt bikes, but I live in a townhouse in northern NJ now with very few places to ride off road with the exception of power lines or pipe line trails that I try to make the most of before I get kicked from them too. So I kept the 650 for road to trail riding. Otherwise, smaller is better for me if I had a place to really rip it up. Just my opinion because many people are impressed by big CCs without thinking about the labor of wrangling a heavy behemoth through the hills or having to rescue that lead sled from a mud bog or deep ravine. Also keep in mind that no machine is perfect. If you break it or it doesn't start way out there, smaller is easier to push.

Agree, I'm considering a Dual sport 250 or 300 at the most this spring. My road rides are short, so mostly off road. Forest roads, gas pipelines, power lines, a 250 is more than enough to have fun on. Looking at the 2021 CRF250L...

Any bike is going to put a smile on your face when you're out and about.. like mentioned below.. DRZ400 is also a great bike.. but not the same league. I love my 18 KTM 500.. but I have full respect for anyone riding anything else that gets them down the road and puts a smile on their faces. Bring on warmer temps so we can get out and rip !! Cheers from ON Canada.

Great video, really enjoyed the cinematography and approach to the review. As a Beta rider in a sea of orange this definitely bring a little vindication to my bike choice. They've been making improvements every year and make truly worthy competition to the KTMs and Huskies of the world. The more competitive brands in this market segment, the better it is for us, riders!

I've ridden the KTM, Honda and Beta. Each one has one or two issues that turn me off. The Beta has a substandard suspension. They have been ignoring an issue with the coating on the forks. Some forks are ok. Some are not. The coating wears off and contaminates the oil. I was about to buy one before I discovered this. The forks are also dangerously soft with very little progression (bottoming resistance). Put a good suspension on the Beta, and it is at the top. You can accomplish this with the Ohlins suspension option but you shouldn't have to. The RR suspension is stiffer but still subpar in comparison to the KTM and Honda. Fuel consumption is the worst of the bunch and it runs hot. However, the Beta has the smoothest engine and the most top end power. The KTM is one engine refinement away from being the top bike. It needs a heavier counterbalancer. The 500 KTM and Husky engine vibrations are an absolute deal killer for me. It's really that bad, and few reviewers even mention it. Very fatiguing. My hands go numb in 5 minutes on the KTM. KTM fixed this issue on the two strokes, and now they can't sell them any faster. Fix that issue, and the KTM or Husky 500 will be my next bike. Better fuel mileage and suspension than the Beta. Featherweight compared to the Honda. Top offroad performance and best fuel economy. The review on the Honda is spot on. Lower the weight and correct the low speed fueling issue and you have the winner. I expect that Honda will fix the latter but not the weight. They will still sell a lot of them because many dual sport guys don't care about top notch offroad performance, therefore very few of them would even notice the weight. They care more about low maintenance, and Honda has the best reputation. The engine has some vibration that the Beta doesn't. Suspension is the best of the bunch. The Husky 450 needs a few more HP and smoother engine (redesigned counterbalancer).

I've had three 450x bikes. They transform from a well mannered motorcycle to a trail ripping monster by opening the air box, uncorking the exhaust, swapping in the 450R needle/jets and snipping the pink wire. Mild to wild. Better throttle response and a decent weight reduction. I cant help but think the dual sport has this ability.

My 2014 ktm 500 is performing flawlessly at around 400 hours. No complaints or problems. I ride mostly tough single track in Colorado with some street miles as well. People are concerned about maintenance intervals but if your not racing the baja 1000 you don't need to replace top ends at the ridiculous recommended 30 hours or whatever they state. I got well over 300 hours before doing mine and it could have gone a little more.

You'll probably get a smoother, quieter ride. A lot of folks moaned about its weight when the specs were released, but hey, that weight came from somewhere, and it turns out a lot of it was vibration dampening materials. Worth it IMO for a dual sport.

KTM and Husky are getting ahead in the reliability department in my opinion, they develop and upgrade their bikes far more often than the Japanese 4. Also for off-road the hydraulic clutch is unbeatable, I've heard that nonsense about "oh I don't like the feel" that's just silly, a hydraulic clutch lasts far longer, has a lighter pull and above all its consistent as in they don't change as the bike and clutch warms up while cable operated will

Excellent video. Much better than the majority of the videos I’ve seen on any of these bikes. It gets old listening to reviewers drone on about vibration and “harsh” suspension. I was unaware that a capable off-road machine is also supposed to be as comfortable and quiet as your Toyota Camry. Nobody in history has ever bought a KTM 500 or anything similar because it’s “comfy” cheap and a great commuter.... If you want a cheap comfy commuter that goes off-road, buy a TW200.

That repetitive guitar riff is super annoying. The Honda is very smooth on pavement. Surprised he didn’t mention that. Doesn’t vibrate. It also has a proper aluminum tail section. The Husky will eat it’s plate and turn signals in a half day on the trail.

We're lucking to have so much choice and such capable bikes that can be ridden hard off road and are reasonably capable getting down the road. Slight variances in each will ensure there is something for everyone. Love my 500. Dumped the end cap screen off the muffle, added a bit of volts to the TPS and removed the evap canister oh and added a LED bulb. My bike hits much harder than a stock bike and cost nothing to make a few "corrections". 400 hrs in it runs like a champ on the all original motor. Maintenance is a breeze, which leaves me puzzled when people say …"yeah but the maintenance…." lol

Nice review of these great bikes which are to quite a degree completely different here in the UK. The Honda being very expensive and strangled with close to half the bhp of its American counterpart. The KTM being the big dog very powerful and light. The Husqvarna built with a very high spec like a six days KTM and the little known Beta we’re more use to seeing the X Trainner on the trails instead of Beta big banger

I know that your joking but I asked myself a similar question. What about a street-legal 450FX or a CRF450X. If you want a high performance dual sport, and you're not afraid of oil changes and bike maintenance, there are ways to make these offroad bikes legal. It takes a little effort but it is really easy. I plated a 2019 YZ450FX. Geared it for dual sport, added a comfort seat, spark arrestor and adjusted the mapping to tame it down. Fantastic dual sport bike for 90:10 Off/On! It would not surprise me if Yamaha produces something similar to the 450L in the next year or two. Their WR450F is street-legal in other countries.

Beta is the most under rated brand out there. Sherco is a French knock-off KTM, Gas Gas is a joke and can never get their import network setup in the US, so that leaves KTM and the Japanese bikes. There is only one that is high quality and focuses on rideability. I don't care for the latest "race ready" products because for 2019 they stiffened the frame too much and no matter who says they are great,,, the AER forks still suck and the flywheels have been lightened to the point that they stall easy. Give me the Beta!! THe 390, the 430 or any of their 2T's are awesome.

Or whatever it is it’s not even a quarter the length of Beta. Hey buy and like any bike you like. Just have correct information listed. All are good bikes. It’s just a regular thing that magazines always get wrong info when it comes to Beta. If they are wrong on reporting on Beta Id think they are wrong with honda, ktm and husky. Id check info again. It’s dumb to specificly list that Beta doesn’t make dirt only bikes. You also know you wouldnt Be covered with anything if you weren’t riding a Beta after a couple of months max... right? Oh and the 4 strokes street legal have a year warranty. The dirt only bikes have 6 months. It would be good for clarification from Honda, ktm and Husky for these bikes.

I have a Husky FE450, absolutely great bike of everything from single track to desert racing. I only recommend it to people who plan to ride very little on the street if at all. Main reason I'd recommend either the Husky, KTM, or Beta is for access to street legal only trails, or if you want a good modern 4 stroke and want to ride year round in California. The honda seems like a better version of the DRZ, but the DRZ sucks so take that for what it is.
