I Know, It's hard to face as a OBS Ford fan... This new Super Duty is really a competitor for the Old 460 F250... If you don't think it will last to make 200,000 miles well, there are plenty in fleets that have already surpassed that mark easily...Open your mind, Change is not all bad..

    We still have a whole bunch of PowerStroke guys who don't realize everything from the 6.9L IDI through the 6.4 were all sourced from Navistar. I mean, they'll full on argue with the technicians who built the stuff and were factory trained to the death over it. Thank you for acknowledging it!

    We have a fleet of the Ford F250 and a couple F350's. If these trucks could talk they would scream. Most are getting close to 300,000 miles on them. Still running strong and used daily. After seeing how great these trucks have held up I personally purchased a 6.2. You made an wise purchase.

    I worked for a service company. I had a brand new 2017 f250 with the 6.2. I got the truck with 15 miles on it and put 50,000 on it in one year. Never got more than 12 mpg avg. It did have a utility bed and hydraulic lift gate on it. It was a fantastic truck and the 6.2 with the 6spd auto had plenty of power and never had a si e problem with it. If I could afford a newer truck with the 6.2 I wouldn't think twice about buying one. I'll probably never be able to afford one but would recommend one any day.

    Try $3000 for a replacement tail light lens on the new multiple camera trucks. It’s amazing tech but you continue to pay even when you own it. I can’t see these things being supported for 25 yrs like the old ones. I’m going the other direction. I’m buying progressively older vehicles to avoid some of the hassles.

    I fell your pain, after driving and loving my '78 and then '79 F250s I finally gave in and upgraded to a new 2002 (which my daughter purchased from me and still a daily driver) and later a 2008 F150. Do I still miss my 79s? yes I do, and my head turns every time I see a classic Ford pickup. Do I miss the easy DIY maintenance of a classic 460 or the feel, power and sound of it? Yep. Do I miss the 7mpg fuel mileage of a 460 or always messing with keeping a 4barrel fed, yes I do. The new trucks are newer and generally more dependable, life moves on. Good for you, great video.

    I am a former Ford tech and worked on all years of Ford Rangers. I have owned 3 generations of Rangers. ‘83 2.3 auto 2wd, ‘97 4.0 5speed 4x4 and now a ‘19 4x4. I have loved them all. That said the ‘19 is by far and away is a better pickup than the other could ever hope to be. Like you said the newest truck doesn’t take away from how good the old trucks are and we’re. If they weren’t any good then the new trucks wouldn’t be worth becoming what they are today. Some day our new trucks will be old and won’t be able to hold a candle to what the future holds. That’s fine.

I own a construction business and we've had multiple 6.2s and 460s in the 90s and we have put a lot more miles on the 6.2s then we ever did on the 460s. Don't get me wrong I love the 460 I have a 97 F350 Crew Cab dually 4x4 460 but for longevity the 6.2 is better. 😊

    I’m an OBS lover, & I’ve had an OBS powerstroke, that truck was great. Drove it for a year then wanted a mechanical truck, so I sold my OBS 95PSD, & bought a 93 idi w a ZF5. My 93 idi is my oil burner, & she’ll run on almost anything. She is pretty slow but for someone that needs a reliable truck that’s easy to keep fuel in the tank it’s great. I do miss the sounds of that old PSD w a straight pipe. The difference w that new truck is that it won’t look as good in 20yrs like the OBS would in another 20. That 460 is a 500k motor I’ve seen guys w em that have 500k on em. I wish ford brought back the 460 instead of rebranding the 7.3 in a gas platform.

I wish they had a V8 gas eco boost drop the eco of course since nothing eco about it. My only complaint is the gas mileage. Truck tows my 32ft tag along just fine. Looked at diesels but not in my budget for my minimal towing and my F150 looks and drives great and tows well for me.

    I'm a Dodge guy. I've driven many Dodge trucks. The old trucks are cool, but daily driving them in modern traffic is a chore. When Dodge redesigned the whole truck in '94 it became so much better than it's predecessor. They rode better, got better mileage, had better brakes, and were far more comfortable. I drive a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 and it's leagues better than the Dodges of the 90s even though I absolutely love the '94-'01 trucks. They look so good inside and out. I could daily one without any problems, but those parts will run out one day. The oldest ones are 25 years old. Sometimes auto parts stores and dealerships don't have parts for 10 year old cars. Yes I'd love to own a 90s Dodge truck and one day I will, but I'd rather have a newer truck if that is all I can have. Sure, I could make a 90s Dodge match my truck, but it'll take a lot of time and money. My truck is clean, no rust. I can't find a decent 2nd gen for a good price without rust.

    Someone says they don't make trucks like they used to, well good. I don't want to drive a noisy, drafty, rough, bouncy old truck every day. I want something comfortable, something that I can drive across the country. I love my 85 f250 but it won't be on any long trips, not because of reliability, but because of 10 mpg and how uncomfortable it is after an hour driving.

    Look at it like this. Old trucks were made to be easily repaired and modified. Everything is modular. Don’t like how uncomfortable the interior is for you? Swap in buckets or a 40 20 40 set. Steering wheel ripped or base model? Easily remove and rewrap it with a kit from pepboys for under $10

    I had a 90 f150 standard cab long bed 300-6. Over 230k purred like a kitten. Had a 94 f150 standard cab long bed 300-6. Over 230k it also purred like a kitten. Both were great trucks and got 15.5 miles to the gallon all the time. Didn't matter if it was highway or city. I currently have a 2011 f250 4x4 with the 6.2. It has over 210k and it runs great. More than enough power for towing and hauling heavy loads. Mileage isn't great. But it dies good for what it is I suppose. I average about 13 between highway and city. My next truck will most likely be the current generation f250. I do like the old fords. But I appreciate the comforts of the new trucks.

    I have a question I have been looking at new trucks and one of them is a Ford super cab long bed like yours. I have been seeing a lot of videos on KZread about the death wobble do you have any practical experience With this do you know anything about it. I watch A lot of your videos on repairs that you have done in the past on your trucks and you seem to be very knowledgeable on the Ford product. Looking for an opinion. Thanks

  • @Foxboss9

    @Foxboss9

    5 жыл бұрын

    I've seen those videos too. I would assume that that death wobble thing shows up and probably one or two out of every 10000 trucks made regardless of brand. I would also assume that if it just so happened to us I would first let Ford try to fix it and if it was still a problem then I would address it myself with a company that has experience with off-road trucks. It's nothing more than a geometry thing and most likely worn components or on the easiest end of the scale maybe it's just I miss adjusted component. Either way the way I understand a lot of these problems that people have with the death wobble has to do with being unloaded. Again, without it happening to me specifically I'm not going to spend any time worrying about it. If it does happen to me then at that point I'll address it. A lot of people talk about having the death wobble but how many people don't experience it. I think there's a lot more trucks on the road that don't have that issue then the ones that do. Buy a large percentage also. The other thing that I notice about the ones that may have the death wobble is that 99% of the time they have changed something with the truck whether it be Tire brand or wheel size and they never mentioned if they got a wheel alignment when they made their changes and who made the changes meaning did they just take it to some local Midas or Monro Muffler and have them do the alignment or did they take it to Ford and I mean a good Ford dealership because some of the service departments really suck out there. Anyways, I was an awful long response for something that should have been quick and simple. Basically, don't worry about something that may never ever happen because the odds are very low that they do. And if it just so happens that you win The Unlucky Lottery and the truck starts doing that to you there's definitely a fix , you just have to find a person that understands front-end geometry and not somebody who just goes by the book when doing front end alignment.

    See I just want a truck that is easy to repair and work on and tows well. I bought a 6.0L Ford Diesel and good GOD it was nothing but problems. I hated that truck so much that I sold it for less than half of what I paid for it 3 years later just to be rid of it. I got a 1995 F250 7.5L 460 OBS extended cab with the long bed and absolutely love it. Simple to work on. Rust free (Texas). Runs great. That said, if you like your new truck nobody should be able to tell you any different. Enjoy it. The newer Fords are pretty good and very comfy. I'd love a 6.7L Diesel, for example. However, they were a bit out of my price range and the 6.4L and 6.0L were both trash from some missteps by Ford for several years.

  • @Foxboss9

    @Foxboss9

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@307elkhunter working on the unit yourself is fine, I understand that, I think you're missing the point that I paid $3,800 for my obs. It was perfect for what I used it for. However, the fact that we needed a four-wheel drive and we were going to be traveling full-time on the road would have made it a lot harder with a vehicle that potentially needed more frequent repairs because of how old it was. So, to recap I paid $3,800 to purchase the truck, I made more than $5,000 in upgrades, I would have needed another $4,600 in upgrades 2 get me better gas mileage and gearing. Then to replace the transmission with a good heavy duty unit 4 towing would cost roughly $2,000. Then another $1,800 to $2,500 to have a complete rebuild on the engine with upgrades to the camshaft and heads. Then I would have to spend at least $800 to do the 4 wheel Drive swap. And that's not even talking about the body work that would have needed to be done. It's all about peace of mind, and here's the kicker , that 6.2 L that's in this new truck is really accessible. I'm sure there's a lot of repairs that could be handled along side of the road but even if not, I've been a AAA Platinum member since the early 90s and have also Good Sam roadside assistance for not only our RV but the truck too. So if I break down on the side of the road with the new truck, I make the call, climb into our RV, fire up the generator, and watch TV and have dinner until they show up and tow me to the Ford dealer. Just because you break down on the side of the road with something that you can fix doesn't mean the terrain North the weather will give you the opportunity to repair and you would have to be towed anyways. For example you break down on the side of the road with a transmission problem on your obs. I don't think that that's something you would necessarily be working on and you two would have to call a tow truck. I agree with your original statement there are people that can't afford a $40,000 truck. But you also have to realize there are a lot more people that can't fix a $9,000 truck and keep it reliable enough to travel the country pulling in RV full time.

    I understand what your saying ..but to make it a fair fight have a 185 thousand miles on that 6.2 and lets see how it performs...Hey wait until you have to change the cam chains in that 6.2 then we will see which engine is better..if you get a bad cam tensioner you will be spending a fortune...the old girl may not have the same accelleration but if you break down on the side of the road chances are you can get yourself going by switching tanks and using the second pump if the one craps out .oh warranty..wait until you have to use it..lol.....i have a 93 f250 7.5 4:10 truck and while a new truck looks appealing it scares the hell out of me because of repair costs...im a 35 year veteran mechanic in the trade..I love that my old truck is much cheaper and easier to repair but I also love that I have no monthly payement on a truck that willl depreciate over 50% in first 5 years..

    You are correct. The new truck has the potential for breakdown and Is much more difficult to work on. The one angle that you're not looking at the decision on is one like our situation. We are selling everything that we own And living full-time in an RV. Just picture your old 460 truck pulling 8,000 pounds through the mountains out west. About halfway up you'll start thinking about How many miles to truck has and no matter how easy it is to work on The last thing you want to do is have to try to find a place to pull over and work on it. I've got a lot of comments on guys that have worked on these trucks as Fleet mechanics and they tell Me that these 6.2s are pretty bulletproof and that they don't have much problems for hundreds of thousands of miles. We could have waited until the 7.3 had came out But that transmission and engine combination isn't proven yet. You know, Back in the early 90s. I made that same argument when the V10 hit the dealerships. And I was right for a few years there as they had all those problems with the spark plugs. But then the V10 became a proven power house. I still like the Simplicity of the 460 a little bit more but The V10 turned out to be a pretty darn good power plant. Two more things made me upgrade That were specific to our situation. Northeast Ohio living and the truck was starting to show rust. Once that starts it does not stop. I'm not talking just body rust I'm talkin frame rust. And the last thing, it wasn't a four-wheel drive. I was not going to go out and try to find an identical OBS 4X4 because doing so would mean I would have to make all the repairs and modifications that I did on this old Ford just to make it comprable. It's a personal preference. The truck will be paid off within a year And it really wasn't that expensive compared to some of these new F-150. With that said, if I was to stay at home here And have access to all of my tools and a garage to work on my truck , and not be traveling full time all over the country pulling an RV around , Then, yes, I would have kept the old truck because it's so easy to work on and it was still getting the job done. And I'm sure having this new truck with the warranty may cause some issue. But can you imagine being out on the road with limited tools and needing to replace That old 185000 mile engine. Whenever it fails and you have no idea who's going to work on it for you. As far as I know there is no national chain of do-it-yourself repair garages That you can just pull into That has all the tools that you need and allows you to work on your own vehicle. If there was, again, I would consider keeping the old truck. I felt the exact same way about that old truck as you do until I've had this new one now for over a year. And just as true as what I said in the video Still holds today. The new truck really is much better than the old truck in a lot of ways. Breakdowns are going to happen. And having somebody else work on my truck, is not something that I like to do, but will be something that I'm going to have to have done.

    @foxboss9 Good for you with new truck! Your a bit younger than me but our thinking isn't much different. Back in the day, "pick one", it was common conversation about more gears and a longer torque range. All manufacturing engineers had the same thing to say, "can not be done". Indeed it could not be done do to dynamic loads. Engine rods were to weak, gears to weak and so. The evolution of materials have made the difference for change for mechanization. To hell with fuel econmy. The balance for power and econmy has aways been a natural search for manfacturing passenger vehicles. Who ever has the best wins. I had a 1972 Subaru DL that got 47 mikes to a gallon - zero power. But it had what I needed for mpg at the time. So Subaru won. So if we do a conversion on my 460 to a 10 transmission, instead of adding a gear box with 3 more gears, would it really be competitive to your new truck? Answer: no, I mean hell No! Bottom line is found in size of engine. Size does matter right along with materials. Your new ride is the merger of evolution in mechanization. MPG and power! As long as we can keep the looney liberal left out of controlling power tomorrows power plants will make your new ride look like what what the 460 has become, a dinosaur. So enjoy your new truck! During the mean time I am going to keep my 460 for FUN and games. Nothing like the sound of a big block! BTW, most of the kids who are reading your post would never understand filling the water jacket with concrete, with drag racing engine. But the reason for doing it directly connect to today's engines and why a billet block engines are absolute animals. Evolution of materials - because it isn't just weight that makes the difference. Sincerly, A member of the choir. Enjoy your new ride.

The sound of the big block made me trade in this 2019 for our new 2020 with the Godzilla 7.3 so now we have that high-tech applied to an old approach with the push rods and port injection and a 10-speed to boot. Forged crankshaft and 6 bolt mains, who would have ever have thought.

    @@Foxboss9 I know. I got a 1973 F250 4X4 Highboy with a highly modified 428 and I have an F350 Super cab, dually 460 EFI with a C6 and Gear Vendors. It's the XLT Lariat with captain seats and dodge center seat/console. Custom made an overhead and upgraded a number of things. She's clean as can be and fully loaded. Only thing I hate is not having the super cab with rear doors like newer trucks have. Super cabs with rear doors are awesome, but I only paid $1,800 for the truck and about $3K for a new engine/trans and paint. What I like is that the gas F350 from the 80's has a payload near that of a diesel F450 because of the curb weight vs GVWR. She handles about 2.5 tons payload and that's near the rate of an F450. Mainly because diesels and newer trucks weigh so much.

    I definitely am feeling the need to replace my f150, especially after purchasing a new travel trailer! I suspected the old 302 wasn't quite up to the job so I went out in search of a lightweight trailer. Well I'll tell you, this old gal just doesn't want to pull and I'm concerned that I'm going to be on the side of the road with a blown clutch (M5R2). I also love the OBS trucks, and have spent a considerable sum painting and refurbishing mine, owned it since new, still only 85000 miles. I would hate to sell it but.....I'm definitely (on the fence) Great video as always, very thorough. I know you'r a gas engine type, but did you even consider a diesel? I've spoken to several people who have made the switch that just swear by them saying if your pulling through the mountains there is just no comparison.

    Zf5 swap. Also, ls swap. I put a 5.3 ls in my 89 f350. Paid 400 for motor from a pick your part; that included harness and gas pedal. Total swap cost was around 2k. Cammed it for whatever 300 bucks more. And the headers and chip tuner came in a pack and were 600. So basically 3k in upgrades and my truck went from 200ish hp and 8mpg to 450 (dyno'd) hp 420 ft/lbs and 17 mpg unloaded (could prob do better; I have fun driving it). Power now is plenty and truck has many reliable miles since. Also, I live in the canadian rockies and pass people on the hills no issue. Makes no sense to me to "upgrade". People are creatures of habit change can be difficult for most people and will fight you to the end. For your situation it was time and you made a great choice and you will really enjoy towing your RV not having to always think about your old truck every little clunk or how many RPMs your engine is going. That will be something you will have to get used to NOT to do in your new truck. Enjoy!

    As far as the throttle, manufacturers are not allowing the throttle body plates to shut close immediately for emissions reasons. Once you get on the gas hard and then suddenly shut the throttle body closed the engine will produce nitrogen and cause a rich mixture for a split second since the fuel injectors usually dont get the signal at the same exact time to shut off therefor thats how you get your pops and crackles out of racecars due to the lack of oxygen and the fuel burning off in the exhaust manifold. Car makers leave it open slightly to reduced wear on the catalytic converters and to get under the emissions laws. Nitrogen is a big no no for the EPA. I have a 350z with a 6 speed and it sucks when you have to wait for an eternity for the rpm's to come down before you let go of the clutch. A simple tune will stop the ecu from holding the blades open and a lighter flywheel helps also if you got a manual trans.

    Hard to find them already optioned in with the trucks that are offered on the lot. 15000 lb Towing would be a nice buffer however I don't plan on Towing over 10000 pounds with this truck. So the fact that this one can handle 13500 lb is just fine. Seeing how there are two overdrive gears now I can duplicate what my old F-250 did with 4 10s by just keeping it in 5th gear. So the lower ratio is not needed. And the fact that traveling empty the truck hardly revs at all in 6th Gear makes those 373s worthwhile. Now that would change if we were trying to haul close to maximum tow rate. At that point I would definitely shoot for the for 4:30 s

I currently tow it a few times a year, just locally(no more than 3 hours away). I have a wife and 3 kids, we want to start towing out of state. When you take the amount of the total weight of the trailer loaded, with water, my entire family, 2 dogs, and cargo, I am thinking I would probably be better off with the 4.30 gears. I have friends that have told me that I would be ok with the 3.73 gears. What do you think?

    To bad you couldn't have waited till Ford put out the new 7.3. Its a much better engine design to replace the 6.2. I wouldn't count on Fords so called warranty and extended warranty . Local dealer here could not even figure out a busted boot on the pcv tube on my wifes expedition. Told my father n law to check it for me since im currently deployed. Bingo. Common problem.Glorified parts changers.Start looking at 80k to 120k miles you will start to see timing and VCT issues. Hopefully not but it a proven costly problem . I have obs Ford's and a 98. Ford broke me of ever owning another mod engine. We have a 2017 6.7 shop truck that wouldnt own do to all the unnecessary electronics that run the price up. Sucks to say this as a life long Ford owner. But the LS and Hemi are much better engines. Who quoted you such a high amount for a mass air conversion? Mine was only 750.00 for 95 351w. I know this just my two cents from what I seen when dealing with coworks fords and it dosnt amount to a hill of beans. Love the videos.

    You need to do a little truck research. I don't know how you think that truck is $80,000 but you're crazy. We bought it for $39,690. And if I spent $20,000 on a truck that was starting to rust I would still have and overpriced piece of nostalgia it wouldn't do the job as well and not have a warranty. So if it breaks down it's not going to get fixed unless I crawl underneath of it, while I'm living on the road in an RV, or spend some more money. Nobody has money to blow.
