In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

-The commentary of this round is ridiculous. Joseph and ben were in transition, and though the game was a little one sided, it still was a tense moment and the commentators are joking all through the round about something/someone who isnt involved in the actual game that they are supposed to commentate about. -The worst thing about this is the fact that the players can actually hear all of this during their match which can (and does as u can all see by their reactions) distract their game.

Yeah you could tell Jonas wanted to go back to the commentary then you hear very loudly "WHO WANTS A CARD?!" The CTWC monthly videos are often trash too so I end up putting it on mute. But it's less expected at this event. Jonas and Heather are by far the best commentators. It's annoying most the 'official' commentators don't get the hints to focus on the games sometimes. They don't seem to realise they can entertain while commenting on the actual game. They should all be made to watch Jonas and Heathers commentaries and analysis' of games. I'll stop ranting now.

I hope he does learn from this - Arda Ocal is a cool dude, as I've been following him since The Score days with Norm Sousa, Renee Paquette, and Mauro Ranallo. He even answered one of my questions in the Ask the Ref series. I just think that going forward, he needs to reel it in a bit. Also, I would commentate with the mindset that the viewer can't see what's happening on screen. That way you tell the story without the technical aspect that someone like Heather or Jonas can provide. If he goes that route, I think we'll see improvement. But no more 'giveaways' while participants are playing for their tournament lives; in single elimination no less.

"Maybe I should have had a bourbon during the game" I swear the more I watch this year's CTWC the more convinced I become that classic Tetris is the darts of eSports - On the surface level there's the alcohol gags (somehow emphasized by how drunk the CTEC crowd was this year) and them being both being high skill but everyone's a bit surprised when they first realize it's played competitively, but you've also got the two standards (PAL and NTSC for classic Tetris vs two different organizing bodies in darts), a newer generation causing a bit of a shakeup at the moment, both games seeing huge skill increases in recent years... I don't mean any of that as a bad thing, I'm just seeing parallels is all.

Batfoy's stack is always so soothing to watch. Heather, Jonas, and Chris are definitely the best commentators, and Chris and James have made a fine duo for the finals. I feel like Arda is better suited for interviews or announcements between games. He tends to try and get a back-and-forth with the crowd or whoever he is talking to, which is great for interviews, but not as good when they're concentrating. The video caught him at a bit of a bad time here. Have to agree, the information about cards is pretty distracting, watching back now.

For those who don't know, Walter Day was complicit in Billy Mitchel cheating and posting his fake scores on Twin Galaxies. That is the same guy who came to this event and disrupted it. In all fairness, one of the commentators was totally guilty in letting Walter Day hijack the event and make it about whatever it was that he was doing. Please CTWC organizers, do not let this happen again. It's bad enough that Walter Day is a corrupt video game judge, it's even worse when you allow one of your commentators to distract both the viewers, and the competitors. I had felt great about Arda's work at CTWC 2018. I praised them and felt their professionalism to be great. On this video, there are many other folks expressing upset at the momentary slips of Arda becoming distracted from their role of casting. I feel this had indeed been a problem, but I do not feel it is exclusive to this moment in this CTWC 2019. I feel Arda seems to be a bit too loose with their casting this season. A bit too casual. I feel the games, the sport, and the players should be the priority. I feel Arda's personality is great and I do feel they have that professional talent in some of the work they do. I feel Arda can and will improve and I wish well for them in their future endeavours, including at any return to CTWC they have in the future. I do not approve of the many comments here harassing Arda or the CTWC staffers. Our TETRIS community is an especially positive one. Please do er'body well and express your upsets as best you can, folks. I feel like this is a good place to vent. ctwc should no longer seed based on scores obtained in a single day. it is way to exploitable. some players would be able to set their scores so they are seeded in a certain position. not to mention, it's not really a test of how good someone is but rather of how good someone can do on that day. basically it makes the seeding inaccurate, and it will continue to be less accurate as skill levels increase. also, I understand the downsides to this, but I think having a double elimination tournament without streaming all the matchups has more of a net positive than negative, for the players at least. kinda like how paying college athletes would be good for them and bad for spectators.

There were seven players who maxed out in qualifying this year, which is about how many did it last year. If we can assume that stays relatively static, it would make sense to incentivize it by giving the top eight qualifiers a bye to Round 2. Seeds 9-16 would still start at Round 1, so Round 0 would have seeds 17-48 fighting for only eight places on the bracket instead of sixteen. You could do that by pool play. Eight groups of four, round-robin, each player gets one game against every other player in the group. The two best records in the group then play a best-of-three, with the winner of their head-to-head game having a one-game advantage.

Tim Crnkovich With CTM and the regional tournaments, the community is well on its way with that. What’s missing is a Masters-type event where only the best-of-the-best players are invited. Part of what makes Jonas, Harry, etc. being eliminated so early such a bummer is that we likely won’t have a chance to see them play against Joseph or the Japanese players in live competition until next year’s CTWC. It would be great if an all-star tournament could be worked out logistically before then.

For everyone complaining about the commentators, 1, the event is already over, not a whole lot they can do now and 2, they are actually more like announcers for the crowd then strictly commentators, and especially in the earlier rounds, not everybody is going to be focused on just one game, so the commentators are more there just to entertain. in the semis and final they will be more focused as there will be only one game at a time and so everybody will be focused on the one game
