2019 Buick Enclave - Review & Road Test

Buick's 2019 Enclave is a seven-passenger SUV that aims for those family-hauler shoppers with premium taste looking for the lux life. Completely redesigned inside and out, with new tech and safety features, improved cargo space, the Enclave is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 with a 9-speed automatic transmission. But does all that add up to American luxury? Micah Muzio of Kelley Blue Book will let you know at the end of this video.

    If you haven’t actually been in one, I’d recommend reserving judgement. And check new car prices. Note he kicks off with the “negatives” because there aren’t many. Having spent time in the Enclave Avenir and cars/crossovers ranging over $100k, I think GM is actually very competitive. The Volvo is supposedly the nicest for interior, but in reality the materials themselves are not that much more “premium”... the bigger difference is design aesthetic. As for quality and reliability, while the Buick’s sunroof shades feel flimsy and there is the one annoying misalignment of a trim piece, the more expensive XC90 I had for a few days had a terribly buggy center infotainment stack... which was worse, because critical vehicle settings are all handled through it in their unhealthy OCD drive to eliminate physical buttons. Actually operating the vehicle was far more frustrating. The Buick’s control systems and interfaces, on the other hand, all worked seamlessly and GM has wisely retained physical buttons for certain settings that you should NOT be taking your eyes off the road to change on a giant menu screen. Adjusting the thermostat in the Buick is a click of a well placed knob, whereas on the Volvo you open a menu which opens a giant digital slider onscreen... which obscures your nav map, if you’re using it. Then you have to look at the bloody slider to make sure you only change it a few degrees instead of jumping from 70-80 in one accidental swoop. In terms of interior quality, the Acura isn’t actually much if any distance “ahead” of GM anymore. Ten years ago, absolutely... but today it’s a different story. Back to pricing: Sticker is meaningless, never pay it... and with GM you won’t have to. Found an Enclave Avenir with the technology package (mag ride suspension plus other electronic driver aids) and towing package, sticker just over $61k, and the dealership got down to $54k. All things considered, the Buick is actually very competitive in this segment.

    Not as much as a driver's car than a CX-9, but this is a family hauler and that's where it excels. The price tag does feel a bit steep however - but I'm betting you can negotiate that a bit + whatever incentive program is being offered at your GM dealer at the time of purchase. In China (where Buick has always been the best seller) they have the even more comfortable GL8 minivan - the Enclave is the closest you can get to that here in North America.

  • @normt5463

    @normt5463

    Trades46 Comparing Motor Trend handling the Enclave is right with the CX-9, matches it in braking, and beats the Mazda in acceleration. Plus it offers superior Active Twin Clutch AWD that Mazda only offer slip-n-grip AWD that over heats in testing. All in a much bigger package with best in segment cargo capacity. So this big beauty is a better performer.

    We took the plunge and bought a used 2019 Avenir. Compare it to imports ( like the MDX we traded in) and it feels like a more substantial vehicle. Not as thin and toy like as even an Acura! The interior is very comfortable and looks much higher quality than the Acura. The 310 ho engine is noticeably peppier than the MDX too. Does it corner like a BMW? No, but it is a family car not a sports car. The ride is very quiet, again much improved over the MDX. We love it.

    Gotta love nickel and dime GM, that price and no auto up and down on all windows, no power sunroof shade, no rear passenger shades, no lit glove box and erroneous charges for what is standard in many cars. Especially when these vehicles will depreciate by almost half in 2-3 years. I see loaded 2018 AWD models going for $30k with low miles and plenty of bumper to bumper coverage. If you must wait 3 years and get one with low miles and possibly the bugs worked out and probably with erroneous dealer added accessories. GM has done far better then in the past but charge way too much new and offer little to what many competitors offer standard.

    Well the seats in the 2019 Enclave aren’t any different than the ones in our 2016 Enclave, very uncomfortable, very hard and stiff, no cushion in them, like sitting on boards wrapped in leather…..My Ford F150 has nicer more comfortable seats , more cushion too. Try finding some seats that were in the 2008 Buick Lucerne, then you’ll have nice interior.

    Hey Micah! You never mentioned your 2 other brothers that form your triplet. I find it awesome you guys still dress alike. haha. I am glad to see GM is allowing the disablement of the Start/Stop function as I have it on my car and sometimes when you’re in bumper, to bumper traffic it is a real nuisance and it can’t be good for the car. What do you think of the Chevrolet My LInk Shopping Apps that you download Like NYtimes and People Mag, Audio Books, Weather Channel, Etc. To me this is a VERY distractive menu that takes to much time to load and navigate around. Taking the drivers eyes off the road way to long. I’ve tried it with 4GLTE WIFI built in the car and while traveling in different areas and I have to be stopped to even try and really get any benefit from these apps. The weather Channel is the only one I can really use and even that takes to long to load. Might as well use onStar, or your phone for weather. I know this got long again. Sry. ;)
