Heiskenen's falls shows that the players should clearly be wearing helmets for this event. Speed skaters have helmets and crash mats around the edge of the ice. No helmet & no crash mats is a disaster waiting to happen. I don't want it to be one of those things that they change in the wake of something bad happening.

  • @grahamh1067

Something cool to note: Coyne was only 0.4 seconds slower than McDavid to reach the first circle. That's insane acceleration. Ultimately she slowed down over the course of the run, but taking off from a standing position is super crucial in hockey so that's pretty unreal.

@Taylor Lucas I'm not against honoring women's physical capabilities. I just thought I'd shed light on some overlooked things. First, she is substantially lighter than the male athletes, making acceleration and turning much faster for her. Secondly, in a contest like this your straight away speed begins to work against you, the heavier you are. So it's easy to see why a light person with shorter strides, who wouldn't necessarily excel in straight away speed would have an advantage in this type of race.

I mean overall the men just had better “twitch muscles,” basically quick movements were easier for them due to biological differences. They put more quality into each stride, while she was really focused on the speed of her strides. Plus, the guys weigh at least a bit more than her, causing more friction with the ice, resulting with more water to form under their skates due to the ice melting, resulting in less friction because the skates are traveling on less of a solid and more on a liquid.

And just exactly which one of the Great Gretzky's records will McDavid break? Let's just go with the main ones: 894 goals, 1,963 assists, and 2,857 points. As of today, McDavid only has 280 goals and 790 points and he's already 26. Sure, maybe he'll break Gretzky's records if he plays until he's 60. And don't even talk about Gretzky's single season records lol.

@@henrymorrey4150 I think that's just the Great One being his usual gracious and humble self, especially since arguably the modern NHL with more spacing, no two-line passes and less grabbing/holding should actually favor skilled players, but I guess we can agree to disagree. What is indisputable are the raw numbers: McDavid needs 614 goals and 2067 points to break Gretzky's "main" records. If McDavid plays until he's 41, he has to average about 40 goals and 137 pts/season. Good luck lol Wanna talk about the playoffs? Again the Great One is the undisputed king at 382 points. Little Conner has scored 55 points and won ZERO cups in his illustrious playoff career. And there is no way, no matter how many nice interviews Gretzky gives, anyone is touching these magic numbers: 92, 163 and 215. Not to mention 50 in 39.

Maybe we'll see where he's at in 5-7 years and talk again. FWIW, for my money (even as a lifelong Gretzky fan) the most outrageously talented player in hockey history was the great Mario Lemieux. If he hadn't been so unlucky with injuries and illness, he'd might have broken some of Gretzky's records.

Not as fast lol. Look up speed skating. I'm sure you have already! I'm trying to figure out how much faster people are on skates in the NHL in comparison to Olympic runners like Bolt.

Bettman: if we send them to the Olympics, they'll get injured so no Olympics or world cup. Bettman: let's make them act like circus people on ice, skating fast dangerously for no reason without helmets and maybe getting injured if they fall! Bettman needs to rethink his logic legit though.
