It is a real treat to watch Mr. Harloff prepare his groups. This gave me chills and brought me back to my high school band days with Marian Catholic warming up for Grand National Finals at the RCA Dome. Our director, Mr.Bimm, had the same approach. We would tune individually then as a group,check some spots for tempo, go through the big ensemble hits, a few measures of section features and we were off to the races. Just like these incredible Avon kids, we were laser focused and locked in. Great times. Thank you for posting this.

Impressive. I first came across your tuning video with the Carolina Crown in Texas "dropping the hammer." Something was very emotive about that. And the more I have learned about Carolina Crown, the more impressed I have become. When I was in band decades ago, the band directors were hard-asses. There was approach was perfection or punishment. They felt the worst thing one could tell a student was "good job." I played pretty well if I memorized music, but I didn't read it well. Sightreading for me was nearly impossible. I did really well at mathematics in high school. And in my senior year I won some awards and honors. At my very last lesson of my senior year, after realizing I had promising intelligence, my band director finally realized that I probably had a learning disability when it came to reading music. And he said that too bad we don't have time to work on that. He had three years to help me. Instead he chose to just emotionally beat on me to get me to improve. Looking back, he wasn't a very good teacher. He was a great musician and a director that led bands to national championships, but he was a terrible teacher. He didn't know how to identify learning disabilities. He never knew how to meet a student where they were. He just had the approach of negotiating the part or face an emotional beat down. I am not sure why I stayed in his band when I could have done other things. I love music and I love marching band and DCI shows. That unconscious attraction might have been a big part of not giving up. I am glad to see the way you share your approach in these videos and comment on what's happening behind the scenes. The world needs more band teachers like you. This pandemic has stolen a lot from fans, students and teachers in high school marching band and DCI. I hope DCI could have some flexibility in the age requirements to give those students robbed of the 2020 season a chance to play just one more time.
