    Leanne is absolutely amazing! She is so young, so clean, and does such difficult skills with such grace. I also love how she wears that beautiful bright blue for her! Everybody else wears red and she wears this really refreshing blue. Also, that bars stick!

    @Lots of Spoons-- I agree completely. I love watching Simone compete, but Tim overdoes it. He's said that she's the most dominant athlete, either male or female, in the world today. A young swimmer named Katie might dispute that. A couple of fellows named Bolt, the greatest sprinter the world has ever seen, and Easton, the most dominant decathlete ever, might as well. It is unwise to compare athletic areas in such a way. Certainly Ledecky is just as dominant in her sport as Simone. Both are marvelous athletes, but to say one is more dominant than the other comes off as excess adoration for one sport over another. If one has watched Bolt or Easton over the last eight to ten years, it is clear that they are equally dominant in their sports.

    The American Cup has a max of 16 gymnasts, 8 women and 8 men. From what I've seen, they have always gone one at a time, alternating between the men and women. So you can't really watch gymnasts back to back in the American Cup

    Me too. It's SUPER awkward when they follow gymnasts around after their routine. Especially when they look uncomfortable or are trying not to cry because they screwed up or something. I mean, it really borders on "creepy stalker" how long they keep that camera right in their faces when surely there's a gymnast doing, I dunno, GYMNASTICS elsewhere in the building. But let's watch these ones drinking water or taking their grips off instead...

    Nicole - yay. I didn't think I would see anyone fussing about invasive camerawork except me!!! I drives me bonkers when they come so close to a gymnast's face when they might be on the verge of crying, I could scream. And they KEEP it there. I think if I were one of those competitors, I just might scrape off my greasy tears and rub it all over their camera lens!!!

    This wasn't simone's meet, she literally was in a different state. Tim daggett is annoying literally grace is on beam "simone does that skill" like it's a wolf turn basically every senior elite in the US does that skill. Tim needs to focus on who he is commentating and not only simone. Like simone is amazing dont get me wrong but this meet isn't about her

    Pies but Simone basically popularized the skill in the last quad and that's why practically all of the girls are doing it now. And it's not Simone's fault that ppl can't keep her name out of their mouth. She is still the most ubiquitous figure in the sport so of course she will be name dropped all of the time. Get over it!

  • @MD-722

    Daggett needs to go. At 14.15 whilst commenting Lu Yufei's piked Jaeger, the man called the skill a "flip-catch"---WHAT. Now I know he might have just had a 'brain-fart' or something. But with his number of years in the sport, his number of years in commentary (since the '96 games) this man's abilities in the field have nowhere near improved nor reached the necessary level they should be at for this level of competition. But I will admit, I live in the UK get BBC coverage, so I am SPOILT when it comes to top class commentary, but poor commentary ruins sport. But what's saddest is that prior to him, US commentary was up there, there's entire playlist of Full Event Broadcasts here on USAG's page dating as far back as the '76 American Cup and the standards were so much higher, rivalling even ours and we They either need to force this man to watch them ALL for research purposes, take a relevant course, or just pass the torch to someone else

    All the girls are doing the skills because they get the D score up. I don't think she was saying it is Simone's fault. Simone's still the queen and she is for sure going to be the queen until 2020 (and hopefully after). However it is true that broadcasting puts a big emphasis on Simone, sometimes even showing her after she's done competing instead of showing other athletes perform. Which makes sense because we've been missing her since Rio, but which is also sad for up and coming athletes.

    I think NBC would benefit from some of the tools NCAA uses for their gymnastics commentary: things like the protractor-overlay on BB to demonstrate is a gymnast hits at 180 in their split jumps/leaps; as well as the degree-overlay on bars to better demonstrate if they hit an acceptable handstand, and where the deductions come from by how off they are from that vertical. Nastia's been doing a much better job commentating specifics on Bars (I should hope so, lol), mentioning skill names, specific faults/hits and why they're deductions or not. Visual aides on the replay would just be an added bonus.

  • @mjamitche5245

    @mjamitche5245

    Nastia is a horrible commentator. You would think she knows nothing of the technique the gymnasts are shooting for, even though I know she does. She can't convey it. You're right the NCAA does leagues better than NBC for gymnastics coverage. I just watched a meet where Alicia Sacromone did a very professional job of explaining beam technique. She never once mentioned her own accomplishments or even that she was a former gymnast. It was so refreshing.

    For all those complaining about the commentary, they are not just announcing for gymnastics fans. They have to explain elements of the sport to random joe schmoes at home. Often they have to simplify their commentary. I. Would say 90% of the people who are not die-hard fans said.."where's Simone biles?" Because they usually only watching during the Olympics, which is why they reference her so much.

    Except the british commentators are a little more positive. Every missed landing is not catastrophic. Explaining what's going on doesn't mean nit picking everything apart and explaining why it was a failure. Most don't care about the .1 or even the .3 point deductions they are just impressed by the high flying acrobatics

    @D Leo I am well aware of both tragedies. Both Julissa and Heinrich are two tragic cautionnary tales.My humble opinion is that it is hard to judge or to blame him personally. One could argue that he should not have had Julissa competing the yurchenko vault. But hindsight is 20/20. I could be wrong, and please forgive me if I am, but she learnt that vault at Karyolis and moved to Al Fong late 2017, about a year before the Olympics. I can understand that Al might have felt that her best chance for 1988 was with this vault. Heinrich is one of the many victims of Anorexia. I believe the comments were prompted by one judge and not from Al Fong himself. My comments are in no way meant to diminish the tragedy that is the loss of those two gymnasts, and while there may have been things that Al Fong could have done better in retrospect, I do not think it is fair to lay the full blame at his feet. And he also seems to have grown and matured a lot as a coach and looking at his gymnasts (From Terin Humphrey, Courtney McCool, Kara Eaker, Brenna Dowel, etc...) they all have very sound technique, interesting skills and seem to be well adjusted.

    When the beer virus has cancelled everything and you're desperate for gymnastics, so here I am. The talk about Tim mentioning Simone is not a problem. Simone is the greatest ever. When you watch sportscasters talking about the NFL, it's always Tom Brady. When it's the NBA, it's always about Jordan and LeBron. When it's golf, it's always about Tiger. When it's tennis, it's always about the William's sisters. I don't have a problem with Tim. He knows his gymnastics.
