2019 Acura RDX - Best Luxury CUV?

    Truly a fantastic vehicle. My father and I kinda went in halfsies with this vehicle. We bought the RDX with Tech Package for about 42K and I can't even describe how much I love this SUV. We almost bought a new Audi Q5, very glad we didn't.

    Drew Croft "...posting 52 mph through the course. Acura makes a big deal about its Super Handling AWD, which only comes into play when drivers accelerate through a corner." "Acura missed the mark with the RDX’s annoyingly complex controls. In addition, we are not enthusiastic about the luxury compact SUV's fuel economy." "...Although it’s nicely finished, the materials and build quality don’t quite match the best SUVs in this class. For example, the storage cubbies aren’t lined, there were some uneven panel gaps on the center console, and one of the dash vents didn’t move as freely as the others. Finally, there are plenty of soft-touch surfaces throughout the cabin, but the material on the upper dash and window sill is quite thin." Consumer Reports

    Test drove 2018 BMW X3 XDrive 30i (4 cylinder turbo), 2019 Volvo XC 60 T5 Inscription and 2019 Acura RDX. Acura beats both BMW and Volvo in luxury, technology and overall performance. It is absolutely no-brainer which one to buy in the category of compact luxury SUVs under $50K. Acura delivers on torque, on smoothness of delivery of torque and power, in cornering and overall maneuverability, it has the best steering wheel out of all three vehicles, with the right amount of heaviness, heft and road feedback. It has the best road noise isolation, and the best seats and leather upholstery, beating even the newly redesigned Volvo... The only place where Acura falls short is fuel economy--it has pretty thirsty engine, but it can run on regular gasoline unlike the other two (I know, I am leasing 2019 RDX Tech package)... Sure, one can buy more powerful engine, like turbocharged 3.0 V6 in BMW and both turbo-charged and supercharged T6 in Volvo, or even the 400 hp T8 hybrid system in Volvo, but the actual fun factor of driving the vehicle is not going to change much in my opinion, with Volvo's power delivery being very lumpy (turbo-lag), its steering being very light, and with BMW's long hood and aggressively bolstered, hard bucket seats... Also, price and cost of ownership, including the maintenance and long-term reliability, is always a factor, where Acura, again, delivers big...

    "Sure, one can buy more powerful engine, like turbocharged 3.0 V6 in BMW ..." which doesn't exist. But not being anywhere near a "car guy," you would not know that. Honestly, you should check out an Odyssey if you want to carry a lot of stuff. Much betterin terms of stuff per unit of volume over footprint.

You can verify this information easily here www.acura.com/rdx/pricing-and-specs Under both powertrain and chassis, all RDX are identical. The Aspec simply gets blacked out accents and trim pieces, as well as red interior option and red ambient lighting. I've driven cars with HUD and own one with surround view now. I wouldn't call them deal killers. I rarely use the surround view, and I park in a tight condo garage at times. And if your car has a digital speed readout (this does) the HUD is almost superfluous. You see it and it's nice to have but you don't use it a lot.

    I recently traded in my 2021 Acura RDX (SH-AWD + Technology) after 3 months of ownership. The reason being the shallow hatch height of 30”, which prevented me from putting in a full-size dog crate that’s 31” tall, and could not fit even my medium-sized mountain bike within the hatch area. These are just regular use cases and Acura’s design team need to be fired for not considering these. The 2022 MDX, a much larger vehicle, also has the same 30” hatch height problem. For comparison, the Honda CRV’s hatch is 36” tall (a sheer marvel in packaging) and the Honda Pilot and Honda Passport have 33-34” of hatch height. I now own a 2021 Honda Passport Touring, which meets all of my utility vehicle needs……can easily fit the dog crate, can easily swallow up the mountain bike. Having said that, Acura is not the only culprit here…….the Subaru Ascent, the Subaru Forester, the Subaru Crosstrek, the Toyota RAV4 are all in the unusably shallow hatch height category and it is a shame to call these utility vehicles, if they cannot cater to such mundane use cases.

    Comparably equipped it would hit 65k or more. It's not in the same price range. I find it too small as well, it's more of an X1, Q3, GLA, XC40 competitor on size. I wanted to look at the Cayenne (more comparable to the RDX, X3/X5, Q5, XC60 and GLC in size), but add a few desirable options and you're looking at 80k +. Porsche is directly competitor to M series and AMG and they're all ungodly expensive for anything more than the very base price with almost no options (does come with an engine and some seats).

    I started with Honda as a consultant 5 weeks ago, so for the first time have been looking at how they package their vehicles. It seems that Honda like to keep things simple for the buyer. Three grades of trim/equipment and two engines choices for the petrols. Outside the three grades, there aren't too many options to pick because each grade has very intelligent equipment bundling at that price point. What you want at that price point is there already.

    Honda has almost always been simple when it comes to combinations offered. Their worst offense in the past was limiting interior/exterior color combinations to a ridiculous degree. Back when I shopped an Accord several years ago if you wanted a silver car you got a black interior, period. This vehicle is similar, but at least offers two options or more per exterior color.

Acura dealership says this is normal shifting in AWD. Someone has the same experience???

  • @AAutoBuyersGuide

    @AAutoBuyersGuide

    That is correct. With cars like this they are often still working on option packages up to the end. So Acura was deciding between making the black wheels a factory option vs a dealer option and ended up with the latter but had already made cars for the press fleet.

Acura says the same for the RDX, but it also revealed that its crossover “is based on a common platform that underpins other vehicles, including the CR-V.” This “common platform” is modified for use in the RDX and “is engineered much differently to fulfill the unique performance requirements set for RDX and the Acura brand.” Additionally, Acura noted that while many of its cars are on different platforms, “there are some similar construction materials and methods (high strength steel, high-performance adhesive, roller hemming for the panoramic roof, etc.)” that it uses across its lineup. @Norm T Clueless norm, don’t reply back without answering these 5 questions. is the suspension the same? Is the engine the same? Is the awd system the same? Is the transmission the same? Is the interior the same? You pretty much destroy your own arguments with your own comments. “Is engineered much differently” Thanks for clarifying the major difference between them. LOL. Honda koolaid? Says the guy trying to get people to buy a 45k sedan based on a Camaro platform with GM parts bin interior. LOL. Go apply for a job at a Mercedes dealership, maybe you’ll actually have some vehicles you can compare to the japanese. I also love how you replied to a 2 year old comment, are you getting destroyed by other people too much in the other videos because of how clueless you are? You have to come to an inactive comment section just so people don’t call you out for being such a clown. LOL. Try harder BOY.

    There are diff ways to measure cargo capacity. Acura uses a more volume friendly measurement than many others. So I'm not sure you're correct about it holding more than the X3 and Lexus RX. I've driven and looked at the new RDX and it's toward the top of my list for next vehicles but the hatch didn't seem as big as our RX despite the "cu ft" quoted numbers.

    I had looked at the 2018 and 2019 RDX at the dealer, and bought a 2018 AWD. I liked the look of the 2019 outside but I hated the black carps all over on the A-Spec. I chose the 2018 because it still had functional easy to use knobs, dials, (no confusing screen) and a real drive shifter. The V-6 and the 6 speed was smooth and fast. The only thing missing was the SH-AWD on the 2018. Acura should have retained the V-6 and the 6 speed.

    Tully3674 because only Lexus and Acura are allowed to rebadge a RAV4 or CRV and call it luxury. As soon as Lincoln does it with the Escape (which gets stellar reviews) it is a problem.
