as you state in your review, utes which are marketed as the most practical vehicles for families - in reality are not - esp. when doublecab variants are fitted with hard lids over the wellsides. anything longer than ~1.7m needs to go on the roof. any box larger than 500mm square requires the removal of the hardlid before cartage. anything you dont want damaged or getting wet is required to go in the cabin. anything small which is against the headboard of the wellside requires one to climb into the tray to recover it. typically these vehicles have leaf springs and solid liveaxle rear suspension setup - yet their owners regularly claim that 'they drive like a car' - i can only assume they are comparing to a 20year old car. if you dont need to tow 3T or cart 1T in luggage - surely a decent station wagon is the better option? and on the odd occasion you need to move a 'cube of firewood' or similar - rent a trailer perhaps?

Marcus Petraska hahaha everything you have said is why I don’t get their popularity. I have zero understanding of why utes/4x4 are what every soccer mum is after nowadays. I see businessmen in suits driving around in these...... I mean wtf lol And as another person has already said so many are dragging around boats and trailers behind them that they are simply not meant to be towing. People are amusing.

You see so many around Australia because it's 100% tax deductible as a vehicle that carries a ton. Hence manufacturers making utes for suits.

Yes, anyone who doesn't actually need the utility and cannot make use of the tax advantages, which are broadly similar in the UK [100% business tax relief on 1 ton capacity version plus all VAT reclaimable] is absolutely daft buying a pickup truck. Totally impractical for town use and comfort and handling are both pretty bad compared with almost any SUV or station wagon. I have one [a Ford Ranger] only because I can't do without one for farm work. Did I mention that they drink like fish?

It’s too expensive let alone missing those convenience/safety features that some of its cheaper competitors have. Lovely Ute but being Essentially at the end of its life cycle it misses out on too much even if it were more closely priced to its competitors.

Rear disc brakes make terrible handbrakes! Does it also have drums 'inside' the discs like Skylines ?

Volkswagen has to add those extra features in to make it worth that kind of money. The competition has them at a much lower price.

You wouldn't be able to drive it legally with a 1 tonne pallet on the back. The specs say that the vehicle can carry a payload of 1010kgs which includes driver and passengers and a full load of fuel, etc. So 1 tonne on the back leaves 10kg for the driver. Also it can only tow 3.5 tonne if the Amarok has an all up weight of 2.5 tonnes - a combined maximum of 6.0 tonnes.

This issue affects most utes sold in our market - the marketing blurb suggests a towing capacity of 3500kg - but when you assess the manufacturers max GVM it is apparent that is is not practically possible. too many large boats/trailers are being towed with undersized utes.

  • @hedydd2

No problem towing 3.5 tons with it. Unfortunately you cannot legally carry much weight in the tray while doing so, although in practice it is much more stable with half a ton in the tray while towing to the max. Main issue with the Amarok for heavy towing is that it does not have a low range box. Not an issue towing but very much an issue when reversing the laden trailer up a slope, because reverse ratio is quite high. So one relies on the torque converter slipping to achieve the push. As anyone with experience knows, the stall speed of the TC will be around 2200 revs, so only fast idle can really be used to reverse. It will fail to push back where lesser powered vehicles with a low range will reverse easily.

I wonder why the seats in the back don’t fold up out the way for carrying expensive electric tools. Baffling to why they didn’t do that. Please VW do the seats that fold up!!!

Drum brakes are preferred on pickups because they brake just as well as discs, are sealed against dirt and stones and don't rust on the shiny metal because it isn't exposed to the wet. If disc brakes on the back really do impress you on a utility vehicle, I suggest you re-evaluate your priorities and knowledge of the vehicle type. They will cost a small fortune more in maintenance than drums. Having said that, they suit posers fine. I suppose you could look at it as the poor-man's Touareg unless regular use is made of the tub. No real security in the tub though and reaching anything in there means climbing in over the tailgate. Buy a pickup if you really need one. Otherwise buy a nice, a very very nice car or SUV for the same money.

If you are going to lecture people on something make sure you know what you are talking about. Disc brakes need a lot less maintenance than drum brakes ,also drum brakes are not sealed and dirt and grime can still get in. Drum brakes are as efficient as disc brakes only if they are ventelated drums. But the big advantige of disc brakes are the fact that they require a lot less maintenance and that is why almost all motorsports use them.
