2018 Volkswagen GTI - Still The BEST Daily Driver You Can Buy

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The long running quintessential hot hatch gets a few upgrades for 2018. Highlighting those changes are a new look, more power, improved interior tech, and better standard equipment. It still feels like a more sophisticated car then it should be, but fully loaded models have an eye-watering sticker price that eclipses $35,000 dollars.

    I have put 4 years and 50 thousand miles on my 2015 GTI. I tend to drive it like I stole it because the car is so dynamic, it begs to be driven hard. I look forward to my commute every single day as a result. I have been meticulous with the maintenance, and it has been flawless, still driving and even looking brand new, still comfortable, spacious, practical, and fun. Toyotas are for people who go out shopping for a new dishwasher and come home with a car. It's just an appliance, designed to run as many joyless miles as possible, all while having the maximum number of cup holders.

    That fun-to-drive feel (Fahrvegnugen?) is integrated into the Golf’s DNA, they all handle brilliantly, whether it’s an entry level or all the way to the Golf R, the only real difference is the power output My ‘07 Rabbit (MkV Golf) is just as much fun as my ‘12 Golf TDI, actually the TDI is slightly more fun, due to the 236 FT-LB of torque, the Rabbit only has 170 TQ both put an ear to ear grin on my face every time :)

    I've test driven the Golf and also the GTI numerous times, really considering getting one. I'm cutting down from 2 cars into 1, and just want a great daily that is fuel efficient, but also still fun to drive. The GTI is so nice, handles great, rides smooth even at 90MPH, not a lot of road noise at all, smooth shifts, such comfortable seats. I haven't found anything I can say I don't like. The car is just beautiful inside and out. I prefer the plaid because leather burns butts in the summer.

    $26k for an entry level spec GTI? You guys in the US don't realise just how cheap cars are over there. In the UK these start at £32k which equates to a US price of $43k inc tax. And these are European made.

    I have been to five euro countries and may I add..almost everything is cheaper here. Groceries..restaurants..cars..fuel..admissions to shows or museums. Clothing is also cheaper by a lot as evidenced by europeans shopping at a local outlet mall while staying at a motel just to accomplish the shopping. In the UK exact items sold there and in the US have the same numerals but one is pound sterling and ours is US dollars…big difference.

The difference is that due to our weak currency, a 35 year old South African earning $40k US/year (ZAR500k/year) is in the top 5% of earners (total population taken into account) and not doing too badly for themselves. #FirstWorldProblems.

I was on highway going 75 and almost hit a huge beaver, i swerved hard to avoid and the diff pulled me back in and avoided a crash that would have happened in any other car without it. 6 years, 72,000 all around. Autobahn also includes the formerly optional Drivers Assistance Package with all the tech (adaptive cruise/active lane keep/blind spot monitoring/auto high beams) and for 2018 now has standard adaptive dampers. With that, it’s not really more expensive than a similar 2017 and it has the 6 year/72k bumper to bumper warranty which is pretty insane.

    P I yeah hey man! No Cavalier anymore? The TDIs are good, especially before they recalled them. I had a ‘16 GTI with all the options a couple cars ago, loved it but now have a BMW. I’m looking at a GTI just like this one for my wife. She’s got a Mustang with a turbo now but looking for something a little more practical. All good choices on what you are looking at. Always liked Miatas. For about the same money I’ve always thought a C5 Corvette is a good option for something fun. They’re reasonably cheap, easy to work on and there’s a lot of good ones for sale (since many were owned by old guys who didn’t drive them). Also 350Zs are good. The 3.5 is an awesome engine with a good exhaust note

  • @erickelly4107

    @erickelly4107

    Yeah the Autobahn has more standard features than your typical 40-50K luxury sports sedan. You combine that with the fact that it’s performance is on par or superior to cars costing 40-50K, is as or more fun to drive, all around practicality of the hatchback design, the excellent build quality inside/out, etc. So I don’t understand those who say the GTI Autobahn is somehow “overpriced” as that just doesn’t make any sense when you put the car into its proper context. I can’t think of a better all around automobile for ~40K. For ~50K now I would seriously consider either a Alfa Remo Giulia or Audi A4 quattro but neither of those can be had for anything close to 40K with any options. But again for the 35-40K range its the GTI Autobahn as the best overall automobile for its combination of sport, comfort and luxury.

    Not a fan of the new lights and rims but I got the base 2016 and have 45k miles and it’s great. Did a 1000 mile trip to Toronto this past summer. Compact for parallel parking, fits 5 people, comfortable but fast when you need it. It’s very stable at high speeds for a car this price and very predictable on fast turns. The front starts to give on fast turns if you push it too much but you lay off the gas and gain control ASAP. I did 70mph on a 25mph highway ramp lol. Overall multi use fast, good on gas and predictable. Hope this helped

    Bought a Focus ST last year that I love. Best handling car in its class. Didn't even consider the GTI (too many friends with VW horror stories). However, I got to drive one of these about a month ago and it's amazing how much more luxurious this car feels compared to mine. Literally night and day. And that DSG is other worldly! It bangs shifts off so damn quick. I don't regret my purchase considering the price I paid (Ford is giving STs away), but this is definitely the better car for daily driving, bar none.

I will say you should never be deterred by these relatively high list prices, given the country's fixation on SUV's I found by using a service like TrueCar I had dealer offers for my S model $4k -$5k below MSRP. and that was for a car that only had a $25k list.

    I have a 15 SE Sportwagon TSI. You can get the 7.5 lights and dynamite tail lights, which are so much better than year '18 tail lights on the GTI. I think they are called mk 7.5. I'm pretty happy with my stock '15 lights. You can get led kits, which I haven't done but that's a lot better than halogen bulbs. I got cool yellow for the DRLs, look sweet and better high beam visibility. I also took out the red plastic strip on the inside of tail lights as seen on KZread and put in amber bulbs. Looks awesome and this was all cheap and easy. Also way better visibility for turning and breaking, for other drivers. Cheers

    The ~ 35-36K “Autobahn” VW GTI comes with more standard features than your typical $50K+ Luxury sports sedan. So to insist that the Top of the line / Autobahn GTI is somehow “too much money” doesn’t really make much sense. For ~35K you’re getting standard equipment typically reserved for automobiles costing over $10K more combined with a vehicle that is more fun to drive than many “sports cars” all the while providing luxury car like ride quality. This isn’t even to mention the outstanding premium Audi-like build quality inside and out. When one takes all into consideration the GTI Autobahn is one hell of a deal. Not one ~ $40K automoble matches the Autobahns combination of sport, comfort and utility. But your can get an STI, Civic Type R or Gold R for that price... STI? Sure great performance and when running balls to the wall around a rally course loads of fun... But here’s the thing how bout the rest of the time / 99.9% of the time you’re using the car as a daily driver? Yeah not so much fun anymore... Civic Type R? Much the same story as the WRX STI but is probably a bit better on a road course (in which 99.9% never use they’re daily driver’s for). The Civic Type R is probably easier to live with day to day but compared to the VW GTI Autobahn it’s simply no where close to being the total package of a vehicle. Golf R? Okay so this is a GTI with AWD and + 76HP / 22FT-LB TQ and all this does does by in large is produce a GTI that is a bit quicker (mainly do to AWD launch) but in actuality isn’t any more fun or rewarding to drive just more expensive and capable of a sub 5 second 0-60mph due to AWD launch if you’re into the “bragging rights” aspect... The AWD will be mostly a negative 99% of the time as it adds weight (something you feel 100% of the time) which ends up costing you more money to refuel. It as well affects how the car feels in general (not as light on its feet obviously) The extra power is again totally unnecessary as the GTI with it’s massively under-rated 220HP/258FT-LB TQ@ 1500rpm is more than adequate. More power would basically just mean more money spent on fuel, tires, brake pads, etc.. When you consider the actual “power to weight” ratio the difference between the GTI and Golf R aren’t as big. There’s a reason the Golf R doesn’t “feel” much if any quicker than the GTI. The actual power to ratio difference is very small so in most real world driving scenarios (20-60, 30-70, 40-80+,etc..) both cars will accelerate at a very similar rate. To me it makes more sense to go with the GTI Autobahn as its no less fun to drive (arguably more so) is not as expensive to begin with and is cheaper to maintain and insure.

    I had a 2016 GTI....I just sold it with only 26K miles. Great car to drive, terrible car to own. All 4 rotors rust overnight..especially if it rains. All 4 rotors had deep grooves cut into them. I can understand one, but all 4? At 23K miles, the computer shut off one of the cylinders while I was on the highway. Limped off the road, had the car towed to the dealership. They confirmed the cylinder being shut off, but said they could not find the problem, could not recreate the problem...sorry about your luck, here's your car back. I drive conservatively and the car burned through a set of tires in 20k miles. Badly cupped...and I even had an alignment done at 3k miles. Then the car accumulated 2 inches of water where the spare tire is. It was like a bathtub. No, I did not leave windows open. Awesome engine and great to drive, but not worth the headaches. I will NEVER buy a VW again!
