If you have an issue with Mazda transmition: First try to program/update your transmition : Start the engine then after 30 seconds press on the breaks little hard. Then N then Switch off then M1 for 5 seconds and just press start, then N start the car then M2 for for 5 seconds then M1 ….wait till you see tachometer going up & wait till it goes down. It worked like magic no clicking sounds especially with reverse.

To properly check fluid level: fluid temp. 122 degrees Fahrenheit engine running. The stick will read considerably higher without the engine running. When the engine is running it's pumping fluid up into the transmission and torque converter lowering the level in the pan. The stick is marked for a running engine. The fluid temp. Is also vital. The temp. changes the fluid vescosity. Temperature makes a huge difference when checking levels. Mazda transmissions are good but you must follow specs. This fill is likely low. Follow the service manual!

yes, they can be problems if you mix different transmission fluids AND the wrong spec fluid will not work optimally in the transmission. Yes, it initially hurts buying 5qts of Mazda fluid, but you have peace of mind knowing it's the right fluid; no chemistry project mixing in additives to convert the wrong spec fluid

no, you do not need to drop the transmission pan; however, w/o dropping the pan, you can't change the transmission filter. Also, w/o dropping the pan, you will only be exchanging a partial amount of the fluid (even less than if you drop the pan, but still not all 8 qts). If you don't drop the pan, in my opinion, you would need to drain, then refill the exact amount...then drive for 10-15 miles and drain again and refill the exact amount to get the most new fluid in and the most old fluid out. The main benefit of NOT dropping the pan is having to replace the rtv gasket. The drawbacks are you can't change the filter, clean up the inside of the pan and magnet, and you use twice as much transmission fluid if you do the drain/fill cycle twice. Even getting 4-5 qts of new fluid in is better than none, but you have to realize the remaining 50% is the older fluid.

It's definitely something you should look into. Perhaps the tranny needs a partial rebuild at worst case, or just some more fluid at best.

total system capacity is around 8 qts, but you'll never get all 8 out because it is in other parts of the transmission (i.e. torque converter). Doing it this way, just measure the amount of fluid you removed/drained and add that amount back in. Take it for a small drive and check the dip stick with car running and transmission warmed up. Add fluid as necessary.

Transmissions are sensitive parts, they don’t deal with combustion which makes them a bit complicated to be diagnosed for problems. Dealerships assumes that because there is no combustion no need to do fluid service on that and transmissions should be kept sealed. Also, when there is a high mileage on the transmission, there might be wear on the clutches and clutches material are just closing the gaps, by doing fluid change you are exposing all those gaps and transmission might act crazy or need rebuild. If you are having no issues with the transmission and not very high mileage, go ahead and do the service.

  • @K03sport

... it is a liability thing. Once they crack the transmission pan, all responsibilities are on them/the tech. Also, Mazda specs the fluid as 'lifetime', so there is no provision to change the fluid. Same goes for the rear diff (on AWD CX-5). If the trans and diff are ever submerged under water, then by all means, change the fluid. Again, it is a dealership liability issue.

great video. I think you'd save some time with removing the air box again and checking the level after the job and everything if you simply measure what came out and put that amount back in. Assuming there's no leaks that would have led to a loss in the oil level.

I saw you torqued the bolts for the filter? Do you know the torque spec? I didn't see it mentioned.
