2018 Honda Fit Sport 6MT - Redline: Review

Stable fuel prices and America's insatiable appetite for crossovers have really hurt sales of cars in the US. However, that hasn't stopped a few manufacturers from introducing all-new versions of sub-compacts. For years, the quintessential choice has always been a Honda Fit and for 2018, Honda has given its entry-level offering a slight refresh. For less than $18,000 dollars, you get a car with more cargo space than most sub-compact SUV's, better MPG, more interior space, and something that is way more fun to drive. The latest Fit still gives buyers plenty of reasons to choose a sub-compact car, especially if you are on a tight budget.

No joke... I was going to get a Civic. When the salesman was preparing the Civic, I said let me test drive the Fit since it’s already on the lot. After a few hours on the dealership, I drove home the 2018 Fit. It really is fun to drive. Not a powerful car, but it was enjoyable! And cheaper too!

Interesting. I'm looking at trading in my 2017 Toyota Corolla for a 2019 Honda Fit Sport Or EX. 15.8k isn't a bad price. I wonder if the dealerships can drop the price easily. I don't see too many new Fit's being sold in my area. There's only about 15 Fit's EX models being sold in my area. And I live in Houston, TX.

If they made a Fit Si, I would buy it in a heartbeat. The Civic Si is nice but it's too big for a compact car. Same goes for the Mazda 3. The Fit is probably the last small car you can buy that's still enjoyable to drive. They need to give this fun chassis the power it deserves.

2:20 I agree, I think they should keep the wheels small, but put on taller sidewall and wider tires. It gives better handling, acceleration, and braking traction, isn't too heavy, and the extra tire really makes for a much smoother ride and really reduces the amount of squeaks and rattles you will get over time while also protecting the wheels from potholes and curb rash better. I had the trend of gigantic 1990s rapper size 20" wheels with rubber band narrow tires on it.

I bought a 2015 Fit EX 6 speed as my first new car and honestly love it. It's easy to park and get down narrow streets in Boston. Plenty of room in it, I used to get compliments about the back seat using it to drive for Lyft. I have seen 40+ MPG on long road trips. The rear magic seats are great for carrying stuff such as the full size wheel when I got a flat. The manual makes it a lot of fun to drive even just being able to hoon on a curvy road going to work. The engine sounds eager and the power is more than adequate. The iVTEC engine is very flexible in that you don't have to constantly downshift all the time. It has enough torque to smoothly pull even from low RPM. I have the EX so I have the sunroof, wireless key and Bluetooth. Overall, it's a great little car. More roomy and fun than it outwardly appears.

@@edgaryzen4925 the fuel tank is kinda small, because it's under the front seats. Only rated for 10.5 gals but with the low fuel light coming on with about a 3rd left, realistically it's like having a 9 gal tank meaning you have to stop for gas more often. 5th and 6th gear are very close and cruising on the highway on 6th is usually over 3k RPM. I wish 6th was a little taller and it would bring the rpm down a bit. The upside to that is you can pass in 6th without having to downshift. The front A pillars are very thick and that can slightly obstruct forward vision, I've learned to look around them when taking a corner. I've had a few close calls with other cars or pedestrians "hiding" in that blindspot. Really just a few nits to pick on an otherwise great little car. I'm still happy with it 133k miles later.

Those are between the LX and EX equipment wise, no moonroof, standard key rather than wireless, more of them available with the manual trans. 2018 was the first year for the Sport Trim and I believe that was the year they added Car Play/Andriod Auto. Fits are seriously good cars. I have a second gen (I also prefer the second gen look) Steering is nice and weighted, shifting is typical for a Honda, very smooth. Cargo space is actually pretty crazy, but what most people don't know, is that it's pretty good in the winter. The gas tank is under the front seats, throwing more weight forward. I agree with needing wider tires. I run 205s on the stock rims :/ But yes, I think it's the last of the old school Hondas, none turbo wise. Edit: VOLUME KNOB thank you. I need a volume knob

Tons of available room with the back seats down for hauling college gear, blowing up an air mattress and camping, etc. A old lady blew through a stop sign and totaled it after four years. RIP Fit. According to several reviewers, including Edmunds, the car has better 0 to 100 kph acceleration with the CVT than with the manual. You don't _feel_ the acceleration with the CVT, but it is there. If memory serves me correctly, Edmunds measured about 8.8 sec with the manual 8.2 with the CVT. When I want max acceleration, such as for passing on the highway or merging into a limited access highway, I simply put the pedal to the floor, like with any other automatic, and the transmission does the work of accelerating. What I noticed is that the engine rapidly goes up to near redline, and then stays rock steady at that RPM. Then wheels just turn faster and faster until they reach the speed you want. The process is so gradual that you hardly notice it. but actual measurements showed that the CVT produced faster acceleration from 0 to 100. Also, with the manual, at 100 kph the engine spins rather fast, even in 6th gear., something like 4200 rpm. With the CVT the engine spins at about 2300. Still, many people are getting good highway figures for kilometers per liter of fuel, about as good as with the manual as with the CVT. This is despite Honda's specs for fuel efficiency which list the manual as getting distinctly lower KPL in the manual

I still have my 2008 Fit and enjoy it almost every day, despite how dorky I look driving it. I always liked the 2nd gen as well and still do, but this 2018 refresh does look good. They are just trying to make it too "fancy" now. I like the simple, efficient, practical and fun to drive angle that they kept on the Sport. MUCH prefer this over the damn compact "cute utes" with a CVT. I'm looking at you HRV. You're just a dumbed down Fit with a lift kit.

It doesn't even need that. The car is featherweight, it could be very quick by just a 1.8 or 2.3L naturally aspirated 150-160Hp something. It keeps the reliability record without the turbo, while speed up a bit better.

Nice review. I have a 2016 Honda Fit EX and I love it. I average 44mpg with a 70/30 highway/city driving. As for wider tires, I wouldn't recommend it if you're in an area where you get any snow at all. If you don't see snow ever, a wider tire will work better for you, however, if ever see snow you'd want to go with a slightly narrower tire which will give you better snow traction and less noise as a bonus. You didn't say anything about the brakes for the 2018 model and from the video it looked like it had rear disc brakes. Did Honda put 4 wheel disc brakes in the 2018 model? (previous versions had rear drum)

Honda is bang on the mark with this trim. It has enough emphasis of its sporty nature breathed into its design, The volume knob addition shows Honda will go out of it's way as a major manufacturer to listen to its customers. Also the increased manual transmission availability, well packaged, great price and android auto/ACP make this too tempting to resist. I'm gonna buy one.

I picked up a 2017 Spark with MT earlier this year, and it's a hoot. I wanted it for urban parking but it's a lot of fun to drive, stable at high freeway speeds, and more resistant to wind - much more resistant - than several other subcompacts I've owned before. Curious, I looked up the specs for the 1983 VW GTi I bought in 1983 - and the footprints are very similar. Just a heavier car in 2017 due to much appreciated crumple zone protection, air bags (10) etc. I lust after the Magic Seats in the Fit, but other than that, the Spark is as much fun to drive as the 2008 Honda Fit MT I owned a few years ago. Of course...no one buys these things anymore, my generation lusted after Triumph TR7's this generation lusts after compact SUV's.

I bought my Fit in 2009... I'm still getting around 40 mpg and I can't tell you how many time's I've left people scratching their heads as I drove away with a load of furniture, lumber, landscaping materials.. or whatever... I can fit a 9'-6" long board inside from back to windshield... never thought of it as a sub compact... I fit way more stuff inside than in my old Jeep Cherokee....if I had to say there is downside I'd say watch your tires and alignment if you're hitting a lot of potholes and watch out for curbs around parking spots as there's not much clearance and it will scrape.... otherwise it's a great car and a great value... .. super reliable and no major mechanical problems at 100K miles....

More fun than the Civic Sport (also 20% lighter) on the narrow twisties... agree a turbo would give low down boost, but I bet this car outlasts a turbo engine, this is bullet proof.

When upshifting at high revs, simply jamming the shifter immediately into the next higher gear - as displayed here - without letting the revs drop to the appropriate level for the next gear will trash the transmission's synchros = an expensive repair. This problem, with Honda in particular, is called "hanging revs," in which the ECU doesn't let the revs drop for about a full second, for exhaust emissions reasons apparently. It's just something to consider before driving this way with the manual trans (if you own the car).

I bought a 2018 Fit, new, for a second car in the family. My two main issues are the windshield washer is very inadequate when driving, and the rear hatch is always getting stuck. When driving over 60kmh (40mph) the washer fluid will not this the windshield any higher than the bottom 1/4 of the windshield. The dealer repair and replace and the issue will exists. The spray nozzles cannot be adjusted to spray high enough. This makes it very dangerous driving in Canadian winters; it is a serious design flaw. For the rear hatch it seems to collect the spray/dirt; after cleaning and lubricating it works well for a month or so.

Am I totally alone in thinking the Fit NEEDS a total Base version? I would love to see them add a DX trim like they use to when he Civic was an affordable simple economy car that was fun. Some manual windows, manual mirrors, steel wheels with center cap, maybe increase the MPG a good 5 mpg and lighten it up a bit. Starting price under or around 13k. "We Make it Simple". Something to compete with Versa S for a little more than the 11 grand those go for but far more practical interior and refined. Civic went all big and upmarket, and the Fit never really was an economy car. Offer one, Honda (you too, VW!)

Let me have the choice of low RPM on the highway, that's what the 6th gear is for! A bit better fuel economy + reduced engine noise is worth it for the 1 extra gear change I have to do every hour of driving. The VW Golf/Jetta TDI 6MT was great for highway RPM. Until we found out about the emissions... The Mustang has a huge ratio change from 5th to 6th for highway fuel economy (yes, I realize this is a powerful car, but I stand by my position above).

edgar flores rev limiter kept it under 3k, it's fine. Plus the cats are probably right in front of the engine so the issue of cold starts of the past are eliminated.

I’d like to buy the manual one, but I’ll never be able to sell it down the road cause nobody drives stick nowadays. And also dealers will give you almost nothing for a trade in!

The reason it won't "chirp into 2nd" is because of the clutch delay valve, not the lack of power.

The current Corolla is really one of our least favorite compact cars on the market. We'd happily take a Civic over it any day but we do realize Toyota is offering some crazy deals on the Corolla at the moment. You could probably pick one up for the same price if not less than this Fit. Honestly, we'd rather get a 2018 Elantra Sport over the current generation Corolla any day. If you are on a budget though, we'd probably get the Fit EX between the two you had mentioned.

If you're looking for a more fun daily driver, go with the Fit or Civic. The Corolla just doesn't have any character. And no matter what, get a manual, it's the best way to have fun with a smaller engine in these Asian cars.

Hmmmm..... no thank you. I had a 2015 Fit and even by subcompact standards, there were way too many compromises. This is a LOUD, buzzy car and freeway trips were just exhausting. With the engine screaming at 3500rpm at 65mph, the engine note was unrelenting. Add in a choppy ride and long trips became daunting. The six speed's gears were very short and required continual shifting in traffic or on surface streets. The front seats were also cramped and there's an impression that Honda focused on the rear seats, and the fronts were an afterthought. The front passenger, especially, had minimal knee room with the intrusive dash and little room for feet. Quality was awful and embarrassing for even a Soviet sourced car. Within the 5k miles I owned it since new, it required over a dozen visits to the dealer due to trim or electrical defects, and even a tow in the first two weeks due to a defective alternator. There were a few good points: indeed, the rear seat was misleadingly huge and practical, fuel economy was great (45mpg on the highway) and the steering was quick enough to make it a fun canyon carver, as shown in the video. But there were way too many compromises in quality, refinement, and overall feel to make this a pleasant. It felt like a penalty box. We ended up getting a Chevy Sonic instead and haven't looked back. Sure, we forsake some fuel economy and rear seat space, but the NVH and front seat space make the Sonic feel like a more solid, well rounded car that is so much easier to live with. And in a surprise twist, it has been trustworthy and much more reliable than the Honda

Just sold my ‘09 to my nephew for his first “hot hatch”! It’s got 114k and only thing wrong with it is the TPMS light that stays on even when I had new tires installed last fall. It’s just one of those things with 2000s/2010s Hondas. It’s funny that my nephew preferred my old fit over getting a ‘15 Chevy Cruze sedan with half the miles, touch screen, tinted windows and moonroof. He wanted the little boy racer car that I had instead😅, but it’s bad ass hatchery with the Sport trim body kit, fog lamps, and tinted windows. Not to mention, it’s so much fun to drive “fast” in town - especially around little roundabouts - when I dust everybody else coming out of them - 😂. They handle and steer so well and it seems faster than it really is. I’ve had two older Hondas as second cars and then sold them to my sister for her teenagers. She completely regrets selling the ‘01 Civic that only had 30k when I sold it to her, so she wants to keep the Fit forever as a reliable extra car for her family and I told her it will last forever as long as they take care of it. I’m excited to see what my nephew does with it.

"What are we gonna git in the next Fit?" A 3 cylinder Hybrid. That's what. Hopefully it benefits from the electric motor and doesn't sacrifice handling. Otherwise our only option is, like, the Chevy Sonic. And no, the VW Golf is not a competitor, and the Versa drives like shit.

Honda why did you not make a Fit Si (or Type R) with a similar performance profile to the Ford Fiesta ST? If you stick to your famed reliability I'm sure it would have sold even with a slightly higher msrp than the Ford's.
