2018 Cherry tomatoes trial

Here's a look at the cherry tomato varieties we're growing this year and how they've performed so far. Thanks to an early planting and a warm early summer we've been picking juicy sweet tomatoes since mid-June!
Tomato varieties mentioned: Sungold F1, Black Cherry, Sunchocola, Superweet 100 F1, Sweet Aperitif, Romeo F1.

    You know it’s funny, year before last I grew super sweet 100 & it was so vigorous I couldn’t keep up with the production. Great video!

    I am a first time backyard gardener this year. I have Golden Jubilee and Super Sweet 100's growing in my little garden. I would say the Super Sweet 100's are doing really well. I have 2 plants which are both about 6 feet tall and about 5 feet wide (they grew bushy when we went on vacation for 2 weeks). I live in Los Angeles. We just bought our house last March. Moved in Mid-March and I sowed the seeds early April. I just got my first ripe tomatoes yesterday. My super sweet 100's has bunches of about 20 tomatoes each. I guess they love the heat.

    @@GrownToCook When the video started I thought I would recommend the Super Sweet 100. One year I had three of them that would fill a five gallon bucket twice a week. By the end of summer I couldn't give any more away and even the squirrels were tired of them. I think that plant of yours was just a genetic dud. ks

    I like growing different cherry tomatoes every year. I usually do at least 8 cherry tomato plants every year. Sungold is a fav in my garden and have been growing it for years but the new favorite this year is Barry's Crazy Cherry. You should check that one out for next year! Black cherry is another favorite but I don't grow it every year. That sunchocola looks really nice. I've heard good things about the Supersweet but have not grown it myself. Your plants look very nice, healthy and well manicured!

    Sungold is rightfully many gardeners' favourite! I'll try to give my Supersweet some liquid comfrey feed to see whether they'll perk up - the greenhouse is pretty hot at the moment (possibly too hot!) so I don't think temperature is the problem...

    My favorite is Sungold. We harvest ours June through October (with cover from frost). A goal is to try two new varieties each year, so I'll use this vid as a resource. Thanks! Also would be interested in seeing how you prune your indeterminates. I do minimal pruning (mostly low-lying branches with no flowers), and they sprawl all over any structure I set up. They are very prolific, but I'd like to try taming them a bit.

    Thank you, Trish! I prune my tomatoes to single stem, mainly to improve air flow and prevent fungal disease which is very prevalent in our climate. It makes for tidy plants but of course dicreases the yield per plant. Your climate is probably much more tomato-friendly so you don't need to prune as much

    Like many others, Sungold is one of my favourites. Last year I grew Sweet Aperitif and it didn't grow terribly large either, it's my impression it is not as large as some of the others. Sweet Million an F1 variety also produces very tasty tomatoes, but as I'd prefer to have open pollinated ones I'm not growing it anymore. Instead I'm trying Wild Mexican with seed bought from Pascal Poot, the French farmer who doesn't water his tomatoes at all, and they are incredibly prolific but not ripe yet.

    Thanks for sharing, Helle! I read an inteview with a Dutch amateur grower of rare tomato varieties and he said he only water s his plants 2x (under cover) - it should also improve the flavour. Very interesting that you can get away with no watering in Portugal! As we go on vacation in summer, it would be good if the tomatoes could survive without watering.

    Nice video as always! : ) Do you know why the leaves are curly? Pruning in extreme heat. Something I learned from the Portuguese farmers. I tested pruned and unpruned tomatoes this year, the unpruned are not curley... Has to do with more leaves providing extra shade for the plant and the tomatoes...

  • @GrownToCook

    @GrownToCook

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thank you, Simon! Very interesting info - I thought the curling was a sign of stress due to heat (the greenhouse is too hot at the moment and I'm thinking of painting it). Do you not prune the tomatoes at all? I prune mine to single stem to improve air flow and prevent fungal disease. But I'm very interested in your approach!

    I have got pruned tomatoes that provide filtered sunlight to peppers at the bottom. Those have curly leaves, just like yours. I also have unstaked and unpruned tomatoes, no sign of leaf curl there, they produce as much as 3 pruned ones! : ) I am going to continue using both methods because the peppers do much better with some shade from the tomatoes...

    Personally, I don’t like sungold. Too sweet. Black cherry is great. However I tried a new-to-me variety this year called Lucky Tiger. It’s an artisan series from botanical interests. Open Pollinated. The BEST tomato I’ve ever had! And Ive had a lot of tomatoes!

    Thanks for the recommendation, Danielle, I'm writing it down for next year! It's so nice when the varieites are open pollinated so that we can save seed! We did a little taste test with my husband and kids and came to the same conclusion as you - we all prefer the taste of Black Cherry to Sungold.
