20170513 Ein Buntspecht wollte an die Küken

This shows how important it is to have a metal ring/plate surrounding the entrance of your bird box. You can just see the metal surrounding the outside of the entrance, it prevents the Woodpecker from enlarging the hole and killing the entire brood. Well done!

Yes, there is another video here on KZread showing an almost identical scene where the woodpecker gnaws away at the hole until it's big enough to squeeze through. He then takes each of the little birds one by one until the box is finally empty. It then shows the parents return to the box to find it empty and they are visibly upset and confused. It is so sad to watch.

Wunderschönes Video! Like und Abo verdient.

One of the reasons you should make a birdhouse for small birds a little more deeper then normal and only make the hole just enough for the bird so the woodpecker could not reach them and also, as you could easily hear, put a thin metal cheat around the hole so the woodpecker can not whack it self into the nest which it tried to do here and can normally do but couldnt due to the metal, so this person made this nest exactly the right way and thus saved the chicks.

I believe they just added a square metal around the opening. This is a reinforcement for situations like this. You don't want too much metal as it may not be too natural for the bird to select as a nest.

I never knew wood peckers were nest predators. My latest bird nest/box has a aluminum plate which was not for this purpose. I put in a plate so I could size the opening for black cap chick a dees not house wrens like my first box.

The nest is so well designed, but it should be just a bit more deeper, just a bit, cuz the way it is atm maybe allows a woodpecker to hurt some of the chicks if they act curious or if they panicking
