2017 Yamaha FZ-09 First Test Review: bit.ly/fz-09
Yamaha’s sporty FZ-09 is a home run for the Tuning Fork brand. But it’s not resting on its laurels, instead choosing to release an enhanced version for 2017 - only three years after it first arrived on showroom floors. Considering the solid platform, engineers didn’t have to do too much to transform a good bike into an excellent one. We outlined the updates in the preview report from the AIMExpo, so let’s dive into the ride…
Gear we wore on this test ride:
Shoei RF-1200 Valkyrie Helmet: goo.gl/nL6jjX
Alpinestars T-Jaws Air Jacket: goo.gl/GNKDYG
Alpinestars Riffs Jean: goo.gl/Az75RY
Alpinestars Warden Gloves: goo.gl/nKTPBf
Alpinestars Gunner WP Boots: goo.gl/KmfXGy

Just bought mine and freaking love it!! Coming from an R6 to this. I'll never get another crotch rocket again. Now I have all the power and this is very comfortable. Highly recommended!

I test rode this and the tracer version. Great bikes but the throttle is still snatchy when going from off throttle and the right-hand engine case is both massive and very close to your leg. I burnt my leg on it once and kept hitting it with the shin part of my boots. I rode an MT-10 afterward and the difference was stunning. Silky smooth yet incredibly powerful and just as comfortable as the MT-09. It's worth the extra $$$.

There is engine vibration above 5500 rpm. Try to cruise at 80mph or above, and the vibration is transferred to the mirrors and handlebar. You can also feel it in the foot pegs. It's quite bad after 20+ minutes at 80+ mph.

The difference between the FZ-09 and XSR900, at least in Canada, is more than just "a few hundred bucks". It is $1100 more for the XSR900, $11,099 vs $9,999, for the FZ-09. I recently rode the FZ-09, among other bikes at Yamaha Demo Days. The Yamaha rep told me that the two bikes also have different fuel mapping, with the FZ-09 having the more aggressive fuelling.

Deals are certainly out there on 2014-2016 machines. A ECU re-flash is one way to fix the squawks as is stiffer suspension springs. Good luck on your search and let us know when you find one.

Hey Adam great review! I think Yamaha put those Bridgestone tires on for the press event. My 2017 and all the others are shipping with Dunlop D214s.

Yeah, they aren't terrible but it would definitely be worth replacing sooner rather than later. A worthy replacement would be the Sportmax Q3 - you can't beat em' on performance & value.

Hey Adam, great review. I checked Fuelly for the MPG stats on this bike and after reading your article, I disagree with the mileage statement you gave. The mean mpg average is about 42 mpg for a lot of owners per the reports. I've read of people getting upwards of near 50 mpg when they aren't reefing on the throttle a lot. But like you said, I really wish this thing was at least 4.5 gallons of capacity. I'd tour on it. The FJ-09 appeals for touring but it gives up some sporty pretensions. Please review the new Kawasaki Z900 when you get a chance. Looking forward to your honest take on it.

Yeah it all depends on how fast you ride. During this test, (and most of the rides I do) we were generally riding at a quick clip with lots of starting and stopping. I'm sure if you cruise and keep the start/stops to a minimum you could achieve a higher MPG figure. Sounds good - the official press launch even for the Z900 is actually taking place right now in San Diego, California. We didn't get an invite on this one but perhaps there will be an opportunity to swing a leg over that thing later on here.

I'm saving up for a Tracer 900 this Summer, love the looks and what you can do to the ECU (flashing absolutely transforms the performance), but the suspension is still a concern. They didn't really address the issue, they just increased the spring preload! The thing is Yamaha know their suspension is suspect because they offer upgraded fork internals and a Ohlins shock. To me, that is cynical marketing. My Suzuki GSX-R750 has top notch, fully adjustable suspension at both ends straight out of the box. If Yamaha know what works good, they should just go ahead and fit it. Why fit second rate essential parts?

Been waiting on you to do this Adam. Good review as usual, but I have a problem. In my area, I have a Ducati dealer with a leftover Streetfighter 848 for $9k. And another dealer with a 2016 Speed Triple S for $11,400. Hard to choose with all so close in price.
