2017 Volvo XC60 T6 Inscription - Redline: Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Those of you patiently awaiting the next generation XC60 riding on Volvo's very impressive SPA architecture will have to wait just a bit longer. Until then, the latest 2017 XC60 still has the chops to go toe to toe with the newest offerings from Europe, Japan, and America. Those of you in the market for a safe, stylish, luxurious, and comfortable family hauler should put this one at the top of your list.

Not sure if anyone is reading this in 2024, but I really miss these interiors. Wish Vovlo would bring back all the buttons and knobs. That was the sign of true luxury. I can remember everyone losing their minds over how "big" the XC90's touch screen was, but when you have to cram all of those functions in there, the screen gets a lot smaller.

I hate how many individuals in the USA view Volvo as a brand for old people... Like come on their design language has always been great, very minimalistic. When it comes to technology, Volvo's are not far behind German competitors.

Overall a great and thoughtful review. I have a 2016 XC90R8 w/Polestar and it is outstanding. And fast. We may add the XC60R soon. One comment I had on your review is that you were hammering the right foot pretty hard most of the time. While that is fun how about more comments on how it drives/sounds under less aggressive throttle? And my other question is will the 2018 be vastly different? I would expect an engine carryover and exterior/infotainment migration to the 90?

The new xc60 has an evolutionary exterior design (unlike the s60 sedan which is quite different from its predecessor). The interior, however, is much different. I think this car is fine. Last generation but still modern enough and if you can find a CPO version, you're getting some of Volvo's current tech when it was first introduced. However, the SPA platform is much more sophisticated. Also, notice, on the interior, the angled woodgrain is the same that's on the Inscription current s90. It was put here first.

My mom used to drive a 2004 Volvo XC90 with the turbo inline 6 and AWD. She loved it but as it was starting to get order. Things were like going out on it and it was getting very pricey to fix it. So on Sept 1st of 2011 she traded it in and she got her 2011 Toyota Venza V6 with AWD. And ever it is not as nice as the Volvo was she still loves it and she still has some nice things. It has nice leather seats also a sun roof also it has a moon roof in the big sits too. But when she had her Volvo it was a very nice SUV but she was getting tired of things breaking on it like every year or every few mouths.

Redline Reviews - seamless shifts with our '15.5 XC60 T6 inline 6 turbo AWD. It's also very refined sounding. I'm not a fan of the new 4 cylinder drive-e engines, which like you mentioned, are raucous. I've experienced smoother more refined 2.0 4 cylinder turbo's in the Audi line, so this is not just a 4 cylinder config weakness. I understand that the new SPA cars have added sound insulation which will help. Still Volvo should have added a 6 cylinder option or engineered more refinement in the 4 cylinder which currently is not befitting a luxury vehicle. Excellent review!👍

  • @v60polestar88

Yes the drive E motors need more refinement. I have the 2016 V60 Polestar with the inline 6 turbo and 6 speed auto and its very fast and refined. I personally think all you need is 6 gears. I will admit the fuel ecomony isn't the best with the inline 6 but I'll take refinement over mpg

Agreed! For the sacrifices, some you cover, others involving potential long term reliability issues with such a complex little power unit, swapping to the 4 cyl (Drive-e 2.0L T6 w/ AWD) doesn't net that much "real world" fuel mileage gain over the legacy T6 I6 turbo.

I have to admit that I am a little disappointed in this review. You're always so quick to complain about the lack of LEDs, terrible infotainment technology and legroom on other vehicles, yet this vehicle somehow gets a pass? Regardless of it's age, that infotainment system is a joke, the car has no LED highlights other than the admittedly nice taillights and tacked on Autozone DRLs on the front bumper, and the legroom is absolutely terrible in the rear seats - even when comparing vehicles from five years ago, yet alone today. I enjoy watching your reviews but a little more consistency is needed when it comes to your criticisms.

  • @insainllama

If you've sat in one you'd know why it gets such a good review even for such an old platform. Also the infotainment system is actually pretty decent, the screen is just small for todays standards.

  • @theredline

    @theredline

While all the points you make are valid, it's hard to knock a vehicle for those flaws when the design is so old and a new model is literally just a year away. No doubt, all of those concerns will be addressed in the redesigned XC60. Compared to all the other small luxury SUV's we've tested so far, we feel the Volvo still makes a strong case for itself and the design has aged extremely well over the years, we feel the same way about the current Audi Q5 and it's replacement was just shown.

I own 3 Volvos, a 2013 XC60 3.2, a 2016 XC60 T6 Platinum, and a 2012 XC90 (the taillight in my profile pic is from the XC90), so I think I am fairly qualified right now to tell you that nearly all of your comments are flawed: I am 6"5 I frequently drive my elderly parents and siblings - all of which are 6"3 and taller - and we all fit in the vehicle perfectly. I have yet to fit someone in the middle seat at the same time however. Its surprising how well we fit actually, and comfort is high on those vehicles, which Volvo is known for. The Infotainment System is not horrible, but its not the best-in-class either. It is certainly better than other systems I have used. The LED DRLs on the front bumper light very nicely. The previous gen, which I also own, had the LED DRLs between the Headlights and the Grille, and when you turned off the headlights but left the LEDs on, you could tell they were on and they were bright. So your "Autozone DRL" comment is invalid. I do find hilarious that you comment on how the reviewer criticized the lack of certain features, and then you did the exact same. Volvo's are known to be very sturdy, very comfortable and very safe. Its why I have purchased 3 with my wife, 2 new and 1 as a CPO (13' XC60). In fact Volvo is not supposed to be known for their "Infotainment". They put the majority of their research and design into saving the lives of occupants. They were the pioneers of the seatbelts we have today ya know. If you want the best set up, go focus on someone who's entire brand is focused on their center dash. The Infotainment is not like it was in my 2009 XC90 that I owned, where the GPS was laggy, and the radio was confusing. They have put lots of development into their systems and have succeeded in my EXPERIENCED opinion. To me, your comment has a "I drive a Ford so I hate Chevy without any real evidence to support my case" kind of vibe. You probably drive a BMW, or something that competes. To me your comment also has a hint of arrogance to it, albeit so does this comment I am making right now. Vehicles are getting smaller and smaller today. Even if the economy is back and people are buying Tahoe's - which we just put an order in for - and Expeditions again, the general idea now is that a smaller and loaded package is the way to go, and the fact that this car has a "dated" design, helps it. It has a huge trunk, great legroom, and amazing use of storage. That is something you don't find today. If you want to talk about "old platform", look at Dodge/Jeep/Chrysler who have used a 1980s Mercedes E class as a platform even to this day, as I am typing this on February 11, 2018. THAT is dated. A design from 2009 is not. **If my comment seems jumbled, arrogant, rude, and filled with grammatical errors; go with it. It's 5 am and I am picking up my wife from the Airport in half an hour after working on an assignment for my boss all night, I'm exhausted. Not to mention it's -35 degrees Fahrenheit outside and I forgot to plug in my XC90 to the block heater last night... realizing that as I type this... awesome... But my point is valid and at least comprehensible, hopefully ;)**

Looks pretty dated, especially with the center stack with all the numbers. Also, the push button start location has been a point of contention for you in some of your other reviews and yet you did not criticize it in this car which I found odd.

Unfortunately, due to CAFE rules, all the major manufacturers are doing 4-cylinder. Mercedes sells a $70 sedan with a 4-cyl. Sad but a signs of the time.

To my eyes it looks nothing like a Forester. A Forester has huge windows and has a very wagonish sort of shape. And I like it for that reason. The Volvo has a fairly high belt line that raises up toward the back. The front and rear of this car look nothing like a Forester either. I don't see any resemblance to the Honda, either, though sometimes Honda and Volvos have similar tail lights.

Terrible reviewer. Puts it in sport mode, then complains it's a harsh gear change. Complains about a noise that's telling you your not in the lane correctly (maybe due to the driver all over the road, using both lanes). Takes hands completely of the wheel while driving, etc etc awful review.
