*I like the old style Echo Dot because it's small also **Newest.Technology**, gives out decent sound and doesn't take up a lot of shelf space if you want to put it on beam in the workshop or shed.*

If I have a Google home and harmony hub can I create a detailed home automation system that controls lights and other equipment as well as a.c. equipment? It seems that the echo has a larger equipment access that Google homes.

i love the Google and Harmony combo, I was using the shortcuts and they made it great but I was the only voice that Google Home would change the TV with all other voices kept on getting a response to link their accounts with Harmony defeating the main reason for getting the Harmony and that is so that anyone can easily control my TV through voice.

Does this work with the mini as well? This is the second video of yours that I have watched just by doing a search and I am always impressed so I had to subscribe. I will be browsing thru your list of videos and seeing what other juicy tidbits of knowledge I can gain. I am in the process of building up my home automation and have been struggling with getting the echo or the home. It appears the home is where I want to go as the biggest drawback is the lack of an aux cord and the multitude of supported apps/products. I assume the latter will be fixed as google continues to catch up and if I am not mistaken the Bluetooth will work in place of an aux cord, correct? Thanks for all you do.

I've found that connecting Harmony through Smartthings works much better. I hate having to say "ask Harmony" and also half the time Google replies with "I'm sorry, I can't do that yet"

The direct connection works much better than smartthings. Did you watch the whole video? You can setup shortcuts to avoid saying "ask harmony to". I only use smartthings for controlling my other two hubs.

Majestechs I think it depends on the setup. it looks like you have a lot of lights and things set up through Harmony, which I do all through Smartthings. Harmony can't control my STB because it's RF, so I haven't had any issues using ST to control everything. thanks for the videos!

Cool. Yeah all of my devices work through Smartthings. The Harmony hub is linked to the smartthings hub to control the lights. I was just referring to the "ask harmony to" part, which you can fix with shortcuts.

For people in regions other than the US you can make all this work by only changing the location of the harmony to US through the settings on Harmonys PC based setup software.

Try the 1st method, so after you have your harmony account set up and ready, from your phone say "OK Google, ask harmony to link my account" and Google will lead you through, and you should be good to go, if not, sorry, I can't help then.

You can just say "Hey Google, go to assistant settings", then select settings and you'll find your way to the same screen.

When increasing the volume # steps the word 'BY' is necessary to work as i just found out by watching you to find out what i was doing wrong. "increase the volume 3" does not work. BY 3

Hey Chris...I did get my Harmony Hub to interface with the Google Assistant.....It's awesome!....Now I'm trying to use interface my TV audio to my Google MAX...Good news and not so great news. I was able to take my TV optical audio to an analog converter and then connect it to audio mini audio plug.....IT WORKED!.....and you can guess the minor issue is the video/audio latency...Any suggestions?....and for MAX fans I know....the Assistant was not intended to do that interfacing TV audio speakers.....My guess is that WHEN DISH interfaces to the assistant that might be the ideal and FIX too?

Chris, I'm kinda confused on this and maybe you can steer me in the right direction. I have 2 entertainment centers one in the family room and one in my man cave. As of right now both my google home mini and harmony are located in the family room. The question is how can I get my man cave to work with harmony or is that not possible?

Hi Majestechs Great video, very informative, please keep up the good work. I have 2 harmony hubs(Family/Bedroom), 2 Google homes in their prospective areas. I've gotten Family room hub working great via harmony hub with google shortcuts!!! The Bedroom hub is only able to turn on/off bedroom TV. My question is (any if anyone else has input ), how do I get the bedroom TV to change channels like the Family room TV?? Do I control the Bedroom TV with IFTTT? I also have a Smart Things hub. Can I connect the 2 harmony hubs thru smart things & IFTTT? I've tried to connect the two harmony hub to Smart things, but it only locates the Family hub??? Please help if possible.

I hope Google gets into the smarthub game because it's sorely needed. Would love an all-in-one controller that has an IR blaster and Z-wave, Zigbee, mesh network protocols.

Great video. Just did this with direct connection works pretty good except. When I tell Google to turn the TV on it takes about 10 seconds or so to actually turn it on. Any idea why it takes so long? Thank you.

Do you know WHY this only works for the US? I live in Guatemala and also have an echo dot (it is more region restrictive BTW) and it works wonderfully with Harmony, even control the activities without having to say "ask Harmony" first.

Is this the best Hub? Can you control your Xfinity Remote or box. Just by only using your Google Assistant without a Hub? Also why would you need more than one Hub? Please explain?

Goofy question: With regards to Google Home now recognizing different voices, do the shortcuts work with different people saying them? If I have a shortcut that turns off the TV, what happens when other people say it if they do NOT have that shortcut?

I am having the same problem. I only need it to increase by 1 when I tell it to turn up volume. It does 3 now and that is way to much for my system. Did you ever figure this out.

Hi -thanks for the youtube video -- the issue I'm having is that after pressing Link Account it never completes (stays on the "please wait ..." screen) - after several hours I tried unplugging the hub so as to have it find Harmony during it's bootup (a suggestion I read on a blog) - that didn't work. Suggestions?

Did you get this figured out? After a bunch of research the workaround for me was right after you hit "link" on the blue box, and it asks you to sign in, you hit the 3 dots in upper right and select "open in chrome" then proceed and works

Go back and re-run the setup and you can edit it there.

Anyone know how to setup a shortcut to change to a specific channel? So something like Ok Google, change to channel 300, which redirects the channel number to harmony

qua415 yes you would need Smart things to control everything else but also a Harmony Hub to control the Audio/Video things in your home. Smarthings doesn't control a TV because it doesn't have an Infrared blaster (i.e to allow an external controller) so you need the Harmony Hub.

Hello Very interested in home automation at this point and planning on buying the google home mini. but it seems like google home can only do so much with an android tv like my sony and it doesnt really turn on xboxes and ps4s unlike the harmony home hub what im basically aiming to do is. - Turn my tv off and on increase the volume etc - Launch netflix sportify, amazon prime video youtube on my tv using voice - i already know philips hue works with google without harmony is this achievable with the Home mini + Harmony Hub set up? and i really wanna emphasize on launching netflix and other apps by voice on my tv?

+Collin Eichinger echo is better for home automation (for now). Google Home is better for questions

You don't have to ask Alexa to do shortcuts. I'm surprised they don't have it setup simpler. It sucks to always say, ask Harmony before a command.

great video , this stuff is cool ,but not so easy to connect them ..need a hub to control TV , need a hub to control light ,need chromcast. then need different apps to make it work seems very rediundant, goole need to make it own products. I still cannot get my TV ON . it will turn OFF .

Can anyone help with this problem Im having. There are 3 google homes in the house and one alexa. The GHs are to different poeple. Mine in my room my moms in the living room and step dads in the master. I bought 3 Harmony hubs because i love voice control and because my step dad is hella old. He accidentally push a button (source) and doesn't know how to get back (forget) to cable source. So voice control is easier for him. Do I need to make each harmony under a different email/user or can I just add each one as separate /deviceHubs under one account? GH doesnt seem to see my harmony in my room.

You need a hub for every room. Each device has to be in the same room as the hub since it's using infrared to send commands.

It depends on your room and the exact location. However, I've had mine work in several locations including behind a TV. The signal it blasts out is pretty strong.

Can you use this to control the Xbox One. For instance could I have Google turn on my AVR, Projector, and Xbox and then ask it to play Stranger Things on Netflix?

Dennis Porch As long as they are controlled by IR then you are good to go. I have my TV Xbox and RGB lights turn on with hotword(Xbox live). To have the Netflix app load up a certain program you will need patience. Since the Xbox displays the last app or game you used before turning it off it will take some testing. I also have one with music to wake me up at 5:40 with my TVs built in KZread app. It turns on TV and RGB lights then I set it up to do commands which navigate to my preferred playlists and start. It also controls my hue lights but it is all optional when creating an activity.

Dennis Porch To have the Xbox load up Netflix you would just need to set commands to either navigate to the pins or to the games and apps. From games and app command it again to navigate to the apps then to Netflix. From pins just set a command to navigate to the Netflix app. From there it will get more complicated since Netflix always changes things up. Might be best to command it to navigate up then search and from there have it select the show. It should work but it's a lot just to have one word activation. Imagine if you have 10 shows though, it would be a pain. Use a computer if you are going to do all these though.

Thanks for the response! I think that's too much trial and error for me to mess with though, especially since if microsoft ever updates the dashboard I'd have to do it all over again... since the last update my netflix pin keeps moving around too.

Majestechs Well i got IFTTT working to turn my TV on but it won't turn it off. I used the IFTTT to turn it off but it don't work. Did it work for you?

like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, kzread.infoUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

For the love of god, I can't figure out hot to get google home and harmony to not turn everything off when I say "power of tv"

Aldi Palucio Chromecast is alright for my dumb TVs . Otherwise most have apps with 4k 5.1 which make the Chromecast obsolete. The Chromecast ultra which outputs 4k is a bit expensive just to control stuff with voice. I'm happy being able to turn on certain things with two words. After that the remote is what you should be using since most of the time you don't know what you want to watch until you look at the Title and description.

I can't get it to open netflix what am I doing wrong?

William Maria If you link your Google home to your chromecast you can use that feature

Yeah I was just reading that. Thankfully it won't affect the Harmony Hub, just the Link Hub.

It's easier to use the remote control. The one thing that puts me off buying any voice control device is the boredom of having to keep saying ask this to do that etc

I don't understand why most people who makes videos related to Google Home cannot mute the freaking word "OK Google". We cannot watch their videos because of bombardment and repetition of hot word and each time our Google Home activates and does not let us watch the video and tries to respond to what is being said in the video. Be considerate people. There are some (only a handful though) who mute the word in their videos to avoid such thing.

Is there a ways for harmany to shut up?

You are limited to only having 5 shortcuts?!?

I challenge you to close your eyes and tell me that Will Smith is not talking.

"Hey Stupid", people have these things near their computers and TV, mute the video when saying the command word or our devices will be talking to your video throughout it's entirety!

I wish that soon Google will get over themselves and let us program our own trigger word... Alexa is so natural sounding verses Hey Google... Even at this point if they picked a standard name similar to Alexa I would be find with it....

I think company branding concerns will prevent changing the trigger word on ANY voice assistant. Google probably doesn't want you to to say "Hey Siri" to trigger the Home.

Thats fine, they can have a black list of trigger words that cant be used... I just want a more natural sounding name, even Siri isnt natural sounding me, something like Alexa from Amazon for example sounds more like a normal persons name.
