2017 Ram 1500 Rear Brake Pad and Rotor Replacement with Detroit Axle Rear Brake Kit

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Time for more maintenance on the 2017 Ram 1500. Right around 133 thousand miles something started grinding and it was pretty obvious it was coming from the rear brakes, which are still factory original. So I ordered an OE Replacement rear brake pads and rotors set by Detroit Axle, threw the GoPro on my head and filmed the entire replacement procedure.

Brakes is one of those areas that I've been a bit afraid to DIY, but after seeing this video it gives me some curiosity to try myself.

I used to feel the same and would always say, "if I screw something up on the engine it just won't start, if I screw something up on the brakes though I won't be able to stop". Then one day I thought, if i was trusted to work on multi-million dollar military aircraft with a pilot's life on the line, I can handle the brakes on a 20 thousand dollar car. And honestly just doing pads and rotors isn't that bad and doesn't even involve breaking open the fluid system. Plus it seemed like even the most basic brake job cost an insane amount of money at most shops and I just couldn't justify spending so much money just because I was a little scared.

@@Scavenger1320 that's a good way of looking at it. You have to start off somewhere.

I do, every single time, except this one time lol. I'm honestly not sure how I missed doing that this time around, but I'm gonna blame filming for this vid which must have distracted me enough to overlook it lol

Small note. Good job but not only clean and lube the pins. But that keep washer is only needed on the assembly line so the rotors dont fall off moving from station to station durring assembly untill the calipers are secured. Not needed beyond first brake job.

Yeah, I don't know how I just completely forgot about the slide pins, I usually don't miss those. I had another comment saying the same thing about that washer. When I did the front brakes I was going to leave the washer off but then the rotor kept moving down on me, so I ended up reusing it to make those easier. So when I got to these rears I just figured I'd do the same even though these rear rotors were staying in place. Thanks for watching and commenting, and verifying what someone else told me about those washers!

How about mentioning the size sockets

Great video. Also turn off your traction control. Get into the habit. You will go through brakes quicker.

didn't think about that with TC but makes sense. My rears still way outlast the fronts so not really an issue for me. Living in Texas I don't have winter roads to deal with and it's not that rainy here either so I doubt my TC kicks in that often anyway.

Been watching your vids. How is towing with the non tow mirrors? Adequate rear vision? I got a Ram Classic on order and tow mirrors are no longer available on the Classic model.

I'd be lying if I didn't say having tow mirrors would be nice, but it's not something that I feel I have to go out of my way to get. It's adequate for me. There's obviously some blind spots and you can't see any of the trailer on the side towards the rear, except for when you're driving on a curve or when turning, but curves happen often enough that I'm used to taking a look in those moments when more become visible. I probably take more looks than someone that does have tow mirrors. As for switching lanes/merging/etc., I've never relied solely on mirrors and I'm always making a mental note of all the traffic thats around me, combined with what I can see with my mirrors and I've never had any issues whatsoever. Plus I'm used to driving with restricted vision with my Challenger that doesn't have a passenger side mirror at all and a body style that creates pretty large blind spots lol. Also, if you do find you just can't live without them, there's options out there like the tow mirror add-ons that just attach over your stock mirror. Or, what I briefly thought about doing is just sourcing a Ram tow mirror from a salvage yard. Usually they're a direct replacement so they're easy to install.

Thinking ordering this same set and using your vid to do them this weekend! What are you thoughts so far? Would be looking at 4 rotors and pads (these same exact ones) thanks for the vid!

I’m still completely happy with this Detroit Axle set and would definitely get them again. No issues and perform same as oem which is something I can’t say for my power stop fronts. If I could go back and re-do my fronts I’d get these instead for sure. Good luck with the brake job and thanks for watching!

yeah, I should have. I honestly don't know how I missed that. I'm gonna blame trying to record it all for this vid pulling my full attention away. Sounds like a valid excuse at least. If you watch my other vid where I do the front brakes on this truck i do in fact wipe clean the slide pins and then re-grease them.
