2017 Mercedes G-Class - The Rolex of 4X4's

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Sweet & Sour take to the dirt in one of the world's most capable off-road machines - The 2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Glass. This truck is definitely a status symbol but how does it handle the gnarly stuff? And why would anyone buy one of these?

We are on our fourth G-class (all second hand and the one we have now is a totally restored 1980 Cabriolet) and I think some might be missing the point when thinking that a modern G-Class would be the only car in the garage. Porsche for sporty drives, BMW/Audi commuting, Range Rover for a rolling gents club and G-class when everything else has gone haywire.

No one will look bad in a pre 98 g500 or the essential g wagon the 300td 2 door. Can do daily, fancy and adventure as well as brutality mixed with stupidity. A nice 240 wolf cabrio is the perfect farm truck.

I hope they never change these damn trucks. They are amazing. Anyone who complains about the on road driving of these machines is straight up missing the point of these! The price tag sucks but they are great off road and that’s what they are to be used for. Luxury truck made for off road. And I can’t wait till I get mine! Also these trucks last a good long while.

I am from Bulgaria. (It is in Eastern Europe if you are too lazy to use a search engine) We have very bad roads (due to corruption) and even driving in some parts of the city, resembles off roading. We also have harsh winters. So SUVs are a common sight in my country. And this is as you said it - the best in terms of status symbol. Its 1979 size is good for city driving and parking (compared to a new Range Rover) And the G-class has the mafia vibe to it so people do not cut you off in traffic and do not honk and argue with you. So there are some logical reasons of getting one. lol

I own one and cannot disagree with anything either of these guys said. With that said I live in NYC where the roads are cracked, speed bump imbued, messy, covered in snow 3 months of the year and speed limits are 40 mph max. The G wagon handles NYC with aplomb like a boss. Too, it's not too big (length/width) so it can park in normal spaces and maneuver traffic. It's the best vehicle for me period with a balance of prestige and capability. I used to own a bmw 5 which was terrible in the winter and bottomed out every time I drove it over a pot hole or crack or speed bump. It's fine steering, handling and speed were useless too for the most part. To each their own.

Some people just love a body on frame SUV. I get it, feels like you are sitting up higher than everyone. That's why I love my 80 series land cruiser but I agree it's not what you would call good on road. Dying bread for sure though. Wrangler, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, Suburban and a few others are the only ones left.

It's always the weak Canadian/American/British car journalist that talk shit and don't get the point this car, it's not designed to drive your fluffy ass to the supermarket, it's designed to get you home safely in tough parts of the world. That's why you'll never see a Range Rover being driven by Russian mafia, or through the Australian outback or through the African bush. Real manly places requires a real manly car, enter G wagons and Land Cruisers...

Stop misleading people by labeling it the 2017 G class, because it is not. This is the 2016 model which has an ongoing production until march/april 2017. The actual 2017 model will be introduced to the public also somewhere around that time and will start production. It will have a slightly different exterior but keep its all well known G class shape, while the interior will get significant changes.

Anybody watching this in 2021, they did change it in 2018, and took away some of the ancientness. Ruined it. I have one like they are reviewing. It’s crude, it’s bumpy, mine is diesel, I took off the sidesteps and the silly chrome tyre cover, I drive it off road, I drive it on the highway, I don’t wash it, I don’t have a Rolex, I don’t have it for what other people think, I have it because I wanted one for 30 years. It is a hoot to drive and I just love it!

Some are too inept to pronounce Geländewagen, so they just say G Wagon. That's really lame. Why doesn't anyone mention that those 3 diff-locks can be engaged while ON THE MOVE?? I am getting a G350d soon. At ⅓ of the price of a new one, but still 190kW and 600 strong ones. I live in South Africa 🇿🇦 where we use them off-road. My friend owns a 41-yo GE280 and just did 5000 miles in the Kgalagadi desert. (The inept say Kalahari, of course )

1:39 those who developed are dead, it has been developed for 40 years now, don't say it like it was made just now 5:35 wrong again, Rubicon does NOT have those differentials, and it does have the articulation (plus a horrible engine), Rubicon only has a center differential, front and rear on rubicon are open differentials that transfer torque using traction control system (breaks), so apples and oranges guys.

Is such a pity... I still didn't find any proper G's test driving. It's always made with "bullshit talk" in every "test-drive" (it reminds me always those typical guys that I find showing off their 4x4 to each other in the supermarket parking lot and talking all the already made sentences about their cars but without really knowing why magazines use them). They speak about G mechanics and rolex philosophy when they can't explain 90% of the G mechanics and why technically they are better than others...Just cheap talk. Oh is the best....bla bla...yeah WHY!?... It seems to me that every car journalist just learn to say that G is the best 4x4 but they don't really know why though, as well as they can't really prove it in the field because, so far, every G's test drive on youtube is done with the same success as it would be with any other proper 4x4 (and even some good SUVs). In this matter, Suzuki Jimny is doing it with much more success. Yes is a different driving from the G but they managed to surprise me a lot with its test drives, in the other hand I start to think that maybe G's are not so special... Please, get some proper test drive track (with slippery muddy hills, and so on, to really challenge de G wagon) and proper off-road drivers, specially the ones that don't need to compare a G wagon with a rolex because they can't understand the real value of the G mechanics. Otherwise, you are making this car acting like a little bitch car.
