2017 Mazda Mazda6 GT - Redline: Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A class leading interior design, seductive exterior looks, and a fuel efficient engine make the 2017 Mazda Mazda6 quite a stand out in a segment heavily littered with too many vanilla entries. Sporty handling and strong value would seem to make it a no brainer but those of you demanding a more spacious feeling cabin and a more relaxed driving experience may find its more mainstream entries to be more compelling.

I used to be one of those people wondering why this car always gets such high praise while it's so down on power. That all changed when I bought my wife a cx5. I was so impressed with the driving dynamics of the cx5 that I looked into a 6 for myself. Fell in love with it, bought it, and haven't had a single regret in my first year of ownership. IMO, the chassis composure and handing is as good as you get in a front drive car. This car will educate you that sporty driving does not need to be all about horsepower. It's about balance, feel, sensory perception and composed responsiveness in this car. My previous car was a 265 HP Maxima for 9 years. I've had more fun briskly driving the 6 in my first year than I had in 9 years of the V6 maxima. Sure I would like to have more power, maybe another 40 HP. But honestly, because the torque comes on so low in the revs that 90% of the time the lack of HP isn't an issue. Simply put, this car has soul. Keep an open mind, drive it, and this car really has the potential to impress.

Brian Tye what is your opinion about the little glass thing in the dashboard? Thats the only feature keeping me away from this 2017 model because it seems more of an eyesore than something that I would actually use. Also, is there a CD player in the 2017?

I won a Mazda3, and let me tell you it is a joy to drive. I sometimes wish I had more power, but the way it handles gives you such a degree of confidence that I feel like you find yourself willing to push the car to its limits because you know it will not fail you. I have owned it since 2014 and so far no issues at all. I highly recommend the M6 is if it is anything like the 3, which I am sure it is.

Well to be honest i live in brazil wich is one of the worst places in the world to buy a car, do you know the spark? Here own one of these is like own a camaro in there but much harder the car starts at least at 45 its luxury car here, but if i live in there i would look for reliability and bang for buck, problably would end buying a cívic, however if i Had a lot of cash it would be a challenger 396 srt or a demon since i love engines, v8, muscle cars, mopar and dodge is my favorite brand, if the viper was in production it would be it a srt viper base in black, so always priority on engine.

I actually think it's a praise for the car. If the prominent thing that people complain about for Mazda is that it's missing a feature rather than a serious safety or mechanical flaw, then its a good car for consumers. One day Mazda will implement some sort of performace package. Here's to hoping the 'Speed' series makes a come back.

I test drove one yesterday & it's really nice overall! Ride feels well controlled, handling is very responsive & the interior is gorgeous. Power is very good for a 4-cylinder & the engine sounds OK. I test drove one for my brother as he might be buying or leasing one soon as I recommended it to him. I would really consider purchasing one for myself & replace my 2015 Toyota Camry XSE V6, but it still doesn't offer a V6 sadly. A turbo 4 is coming for the 2018 model, but much rather have a V6 for its much smoother & much better sound.

To everyone saying the car is underpowerd: I thought the exact same thing. Two weeks ago I got a 2014 Mazda 6 2.5 GTM, the one with 192hp. I thought it was going to be slow. It's not, it isn't exactly fast but it is still a joy to drive. It corners like no other, and the feel you get from the steering and the pedals is very good! Would it be better with more horsepower? Maybe. But it still isn't boring or slow. It isn't all about horsepower. Drive one and you'll see what I'm talking about.

the chassis in this car is just brilliant. it has that feeling similar to a BMW 3 series where it imperceptibly switches between straight-line stability or handling prowess whether you are tackling corners or ripping it down the highway. Mazda mentioned on their website how they focused on redesigning the suspension components that offered a good blend of low-speed agility VS. high speed stability, and it does so impressively with very good stability and excellent steering response. sure it might not handle quite as capably as something like a FWD Acura TL, and it has more body roll then the Acura, but where it really delivers is the chassis/steering response, and how brilliant everything is tuned together. Mazda greatly improved their transmission tuning in terms of responsiveness and gearing. the first three gears of the automatic are short and peppy for city driving, while the last 3 are long for highway use. the dunlops on 19" GT model are shit tires but the 17" yokohamas on the lower trim models are very high performance for OEM tire and the way these tires (advan a83) or any yokohama tires are tuned to the chassis is absolutely brilliant. delivering very sharp and precise steering feel, excellent steering/chassis feel when really pushing the car around corners but where these tires really shine is grip in low temperatures due to the soft compound and the grip/precision in the rain is absolutely astounding. this delivers a wonderfully tactile steering feel, feeling the drivetrain work with the chassis and how admirably it corners when you tackle a corner properly. one of these cars with wider tires, a limited slip differential, bilstein/eibach suspension, an ECU tune and camber plates for more front camber would be one of the best times you can have on a track. this chassis can handle a very healthy amount of power which brings me on to everyones complaint.. power. it sounds anemic on paper, but everyone forgets that this car makes 185ft/lb of torque at barely 3250 which really gets this car going particularly off the line with sharp throttle response, by far the loveliest 4 cylinder sound you will ever hear, you can just tell this engine loves what it is doing. very smooth, free revving and linear for a 4cylinder. there is some lag below 2700rpm, but once you get the end to it's satisfyingly broad and accessible powerband I just dont see why anyone would need more power even during spirited daily driving. our 2015 mazda 6 has 85k KM on it and the car has been nothing but a pleasure to own.

Too many people complaining about the engine. I personally think it's more then adequate. Reliable, refined and sounds pretty good too. It's the perfect engine for what this car is suited for. Basic commuting. The other brands may offer a V6 or turbo 4 but you either risk the crappy mpg or reliability with the complication of more moving parts.

Hey Sofyan - long time viewer just wanted to say great job with your recent reviews. I saw some of your older reviews recently and you have become quite the professional! I wanted to ask what was the best value choice you recommend for this segment. I really enjoy this car but I'm a large guy - top 3 value kings for sticker price & cost of ownership? Keep up the good work man.

The Mazda6 is currently one of our favorites but if you want features, value, and space... the 2017 Hyundai Sonata comes to mind. The Accord and Camry are also solid choices but neither of them offer the kind of premium feel or sporty handling dynamics of the Mazda. We hear that Hyundai is offering crazy deals on the 2017 Sonata right now, we'd look into checking out a Limited 2.0T model. Dealers in our DC area were discounting them as much as $9,000 off MSRP. Hope that helps!

I ended up buying a 6 last year as a sport model. Kinda wished I waited and saved a little bit more to get the touring model. The fake leather seats and even the leather seats are far more comfortable in comparison to the standard cloth.

I'm so glad I seen this video, I was going to get this car. But I can't get a 4 cylinder car, I need something with more power. But it is a super nice car, just not for me anymore.

Debating on this or the 2018 version that has the turbocharged. I've always loved Mazda and I drove a friends loaner 2017 Mazda6 and fell in love. Curious to see where the price tag for the 2018 lands. These cars are fucking beautiful and so fun to drive for the price.

Sofyan, you are so right that no car is perfect. This car looks great and drives great and how many competitors can say that. The problem with the 6 (and Mazda) is that it is so close to being perfect and misses for the silliest reason - horsepower, or lack thereof. There is no excuse for this. All their competitors have figured out a way to make more power available. And even with less horsepower, its not like this car (or Mazdas in general) are outpacing the competition in gas mileage. And lastly, if Mazda is intent on doubling down on not offering or engineering more power, then make the manual an option on all trims. It wont be a sales smash but it would go far in branding Mazda. Be the "Miata" in every car class - lightest, best handling, best looking driver oriented cars.

Here are my comments two months into ownership of a 2017 Sport AT, for the benefit of normal adults who are looking for a fun-to-drive sedan (there are already plenty of comments here for the benefit of immature adults -- many written by people who sound like they have never even sat in the car). I'm a mechanical engineer who also owns a 2001 Alero V6 (like the Mazda6, a sedan noted for good handling) and a 1968 Mustang V8 (handling... not so good). Overall, I rate the 6 as very good, despite the two major (to me) problems I note below. The Pluses: * Handling is excellent in real-world driving situations. The electric-assist steering doesn't give the feedback on turn-in that a hydraulic system does, but the world has moved past hydraulic and at least the 6 is relatively good on this. * Noise is a non-issue now that Mazda added another 49 lb of soundproofing and other improvements beyond what was in the 2016 -- conversation is at normal levels, for example. * Power isn't always there in every situation, unlike with a V6 or V8, but the transmission is well-geared and there actually can be a bit of punch when you catch it at the right part of the power band. I could probably learn to watch the tach so as to maximize that if it mattered all that much, but the 6's 0-60 is in fact better than for my Alero or Mustang, thanks in large part to the superior transmission, and the 6 goes up hills better than my V6 Alero. 180+ lb-ft of torque is actually a fair amount... if you know how to drive ;) Also, "only one engine" trades off against every buyer having to pay the mileage and handling penalty which would go with a car whose structural weight was increased to be able to accept a heavier optional engine that only a relative handful are going to buy. * Nice interior, with better ergonomics than most. I thought I would get Sand for its presumed lower surface temperature in sunlight than Black, but touch-testing both in hot cars at a dealer, I found there wasn't a noticeable difference. It's actually tinting (note that "clear" UV-blocking tint is also available) which turns out to be the main influence on seat/interior temperature. The Negatives: * I am used to and enjoy a firm ride such as with the Alero, but even the 6 Sport, with 55-series tires, becomes jarring/harsh on certain road surfaces. Mazda did not hit the Handling-vs-NVH sweet spot here. A potential buyer with a long commute on imperfect roads (concrete joints especially) needs to really test it out at speed before buying, especially if considering the Touring or Grand Touring with their standard 45-series tires (the Touring I test drove for several miles on "good" road surfaces seemed fine). * Visibility is good overall, but the side-view mirrors being as far out from the window as they are is a real safety headache. Probably designed that way to help with drag/wind noise, but regardless of how I adjust them I am "surprised" by passing cars more often than with any other car I've driven. I've even pondered rigging a small fixed mirror to fill in some of that visual gap, and this problem has me wondering about letting other family members drive the 6 (which won't happen in any event until after it gets its first scratch ;). OTOH, I seem to be the only person who has commented on this, so maybe not a big issue for most people. * The owner's manual is not very well organized, taking what turns out to be the same information said in slightly different ways and spreading it around. I had to create my own one-page "essential information" sheet from scratch, since Mazda's "quick start guide" mostly deals with optional features rather than what it means when say the Start button LED is flashing amber. Final comment: I was not price sensitive in choosing the Sport. I considered it to be the "driver's car" of the lineup, omitting various driver-assist systems which if you read the manual (available on-line) turn out to more "fool-able" than you might think (e.g. automatic braking could be activated by an oncoming car on the other side of the road suddenly appearing around a blind curve, or even under certain circumstances in a parking structure). That said, for a novice driver I imagine these would be more likely to save the day than cause a problem.

What about wind noise? it seems too loud in the video but I can't really tell. Also, how does it feel over speed bumps? is it comfortable on long drives or is it loud with a stiff suspension? This is usually what i'm looking for when buying a car but a lot of reviewers talk about how sporty cars are as if we will be racing. A lot of people just want a comfortable quite ride at an affordable price.

great review! just a clarification at 4:35, the circular MFD is not on the 3, I own a 2017 3GT and wish it had the new style display :) We still have the old format. Also, Mazda just announced that they will be getting Android Auto and Apple Carplay and it will be a retroactive update. I am not sure when or which models will get it but at least the 2017s will.

I'm noticing a lot of people complaining about the power. My wife just got her 2017 mazda 3 6 speed manual with the 2.0 and I will tell you that yes, it could have a little more power. But I will also tell you how much I enjoy taking it for a rip. In many ways it is much more fun to drive the bag off of than my car which has just shy of 400hp. The thing is, for a very well equipped extremely well priced car, this car has a great interior, is comfortable feels sporty, handles quite well and since u only have 155hp... you can cane it.. all the time and guess what.... its fun as shit. Every time I step on the gas in my car I'm over the speed limit. In the 3 you can have much more fun whilst getting in a lot less trouble. Learn to shift it just right and gives you all the power you need to have a blast tearing around the city on a Friday night without losing your license. Lol and the best part.. lmao.. you get home park your car.. and theres still fuel to get you through the week. She wont drink the whole bottle at once.. she sips.. no matter how you treat her! rubixlucifer I wouldn’t say there’s anything I don’t like. Some people say you can feel every bump because of the 19-inch wheels, but it’s honesty not that bad at all. The refinement is great. As for power, it’s extremely impressive for a 4-cyl. It has a sport mode that makes the transmission react extremely fast and you can haul ass pretty easily. Its has adequate power and sporty looks; it’s a win-win for me. I do wish it had apple car play, but that’s being added this year. The infotainment system is more than enough and the standard features are awesome. Mazda has come a long way for sure
