2017 KTM 1290 Super Duke GT Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We probably didn’t need to travel to Spain to find out the Super Duke GT is a terrific motorcycle. After all, it’s based on our 2014 Motorcycle of the Year, the wonderfully capable and funtastically fast Super Duke R. What was yet to be discovered was how the changes from R to GT worked to transform the hooligan roadster into a proper grand tourer.
But it would be unfair to think of the GT as just an R with a windscreen, as it underwent a cornucopia of changes: KTM claims the GT’s development required more than 30 man-years of work. That might sound a bit hyperbolic until all the upgrades are added up.

Does the GT handle as well as the R in tighter switchback curves or is the GT more of an open road bike?

One major problem for me is the sparse dealer network. Not that I expect it to ever need service, but I don't think there is a dealership within 200 miles of me (Detroit, MI). There is a Ducati dealership within 5 miles.

KTM's GT is a semi faired road bike, not a trail bike a lot of you people tend to confuse this category. Closest competitors to the GT are BMW R1200RS and Mv Agusta Stradale 800.

don't blame the US pal, blame your Parliment - see: taxes and fees in the UK. Here we've got the price of the bike + 6 to 8 % sales tax (depends on state and township) NO VAT, NO BS + KTM will sell the GT in larger numbers than in the UK - i.e: the price! Can not wait to get my hands on this one.... looks FUN!!!

I usually enjoy your videos but as was said earlier you fly all the way to Spain and all we get is a 2 minute video? Come on this is a highly anticipated motorcyle and you owe to yourselves and to your subscribers to provide a more detailed and insightful review.

  • @twowheeldanger

+TRexHeliPilot We fly all the way to Spain to deliver an excellent report, which you can find the link to in the video. The video is the icing on the cake. We'd love to be able to fly over a videographer to shoot our own footage, but the free internet can't afford that cost. So we bring back video from our POV cams and whatever the host can provide. Then an editor still needs to be hired. The more you and everyone goes to MO.com, the greater the chance we'll be able to deliver the higher-quality vids you want.

The KTM warranty sucks though. Ducati gives 2 years, unlimited miles, and a premium experience of "something is wrong, I go to the dealer and they fix it." And easy 5 year warranty extensions after that. $20k is too much for something that has the same warranty as a toaster.

aluisious I got 2 years on my 1290. Had the high beam switch stick, and KTM replaced the entire left side switch block that also includes the ride modes etc...no questions. I just bought an extra 4 years of international factory warranty that will cover my trip from Europe to Australia and USA. You don't really know what you're talking about with KTM.

Depends... Personally both do the job well... but I'm glad it stuck to the sport touring aspect.... instead of losing 15-20hp on average and gaining a large amount of weight... Carrying a few extra tools to maintain a chain/replace a chain is no biggie.. If you have a shaft failure that's it for your tour. A chain failure might just delay you a few hours.
