Having managed a fleet of oilfield trucks over the last 20 years, I can assure anyone reading this; the 6.0 can be abused relentlessly or idle hours upon hours in the Texas heat and never skip a beat. The competitors are not even given the opportunity to bid after years of costly disappointments. They're thirsty, but will rarely ever give you a hiccup.

I love that it has the manual shift for the transfer case. If I were in the market for a new truck (which has a great price) I'd get one of these - just because of that floor shifter!

Love that "old " 6.0 I don't understand all the hate for it . It's damn near bulletproof and gets the job done without a hiccup . Also I could've sworn it beat the 6.4 HEMI up the Ike gauntlet when they tested it a couple years ago for those who think the 6.0 is weak .

I'm with you Nathan, in not wanting ( nor liking ) that chrome and those 20 inch wheels & tires. Real work trucks don't need chrome and fancy highway wheels like this (my opinion, based on the replacement cost of 20 inch tires as compared to 17's which will give loads of sidewall for 'air-down' situations). Otherwise is is a well equipped truck with plenty of power for the job.

Not to shabby of a truck for the price. That would be set up just about perfect for me as a farm truck. That chin strap thing wouldn't bother me, I'd probably take it off anyhow. You wouldn't feel a bad trashing on a $40k truck vs. a $60k truck. It's defiantly something I'll be looking into in the near future.

Oh yea! I've been thinking of getting a HD truck for a while now, so I could go with a truck camper instead of travel trailer. Just to be able to downsize my overall footprint and be able to get out to more adventurous places. I've been looking at all of them, the Ford SD , Chevy/GMC HD and Ram HD. I have always had very good service from Chevy and Dodge/Ram, Ford not so much but the new SD is very impressive and it was an F150 I had all the troubles with the ecoburst. The main problem I have been concerned about the Chevy is the smaller engines low power figure as compared to the others, but the recent and extremely helpful TFL IKE tests of the big three SD/HD trucks has proven that is not an issue after all!! Now I see this great test thanks guys by the way, now I can see the field is back to three trucks to consider. It might come down to one or a few days I'll go out to a number of dealers to test drive and see for myself. Then do an online search and price arrangement for the lowest price for what I want, a truck very similar to this one , but with as little chrome as possible!!! Thanks Nathan&Andre'

Thank you for finally reviewing HD Gas & work trucks! I just bought this truck, Chevy 2500HD WT Extended Cab Gas. Very few differences between the WT and LT.. It would be great if you could compare fuel economy when towing different loads and trade offs compared with Diesel. My family uses our Chevy 2500 for towing a travel trailer.

I've also got a kick out of all the people that trash the 6.0. The reason it's in the work truck is because people that are buying it want that engine specifically. They know the 6 liter is more than adequate in Horsepower. Secondly it's proven to be one of the most reliable Motors to ever be put in a truck. Desspite its horsepower numbers being less than its competition, it somehow seemed to do better on the Ike Gauntlet. I wonder how that is? Maybe because GM had over 15 years to get every ounce of power out of this engine effortlessly. It could also be because the engine actually has a power band, and not a spike at 4,000 rpm with nothing but flats around it. Make no doubt about it, the 6 liter engine could certainly make a lot more horsepower than it is from the factory. But that's part of the reason that it runs so long. Even when it's working it's not stressed. People have to also remember that this motor also indirectly replaced the big block V8 that Chevy had forever. That motor got worse gas mileage but was absolutely rugged and reliable and would pull anything. The 6 liter had big shoes to fill even with the Duramax still being an option in the line up. I live in the northeastern part of the United States. Where I live these Chevrolet work trucks are the most common vehicle you see, well that and the GMC sibling occasionally. They go through snow well, temperature extremes don't bother them one iota, and most companies that are running equipment that requires them to purchase trucks like this in the first place have full intentions of driving the truck off road and in bad situations where Mall crawlers aren't going. So they're not worried about the gas mileage as much as using the truck as a tool as it was intended to be.

Ashes 2 Ashes ive used em all in farm and construction work. the 6.0 diesel is a known pos. our ford 5.4 gave well over 200,000 thousand miles of trouble free service always loaded down with tools and supplies. 5.3 vortec was also great though a little doggy when hooked up to a load. the 6.0 in our 02 gmc was not as quick but a beast of a truck. the only ones that ever gave us trouble were dodges of course

  • @ashes2ashes863

    @ashes2ashes863

    6 жыл бұрын

+Caleb Melton let me guess on the Dodges, transmissions and electronics right? lol. You're the perfect example. People with experience like you are why the 6 liter continues to thrive today. You've had them all, most of them have been more than proficient, but at the end of the day the 6 liter Vortec is the one you remember as being the one that just could do it all with no complaints.

Go back to 95 and older trucks or the pre OBD-2 systems. My little GMC Sierra has 175hp and 235FTlbs of Torque out of the optional 5.0L V8... Of course my truck weighs less than half of this modern one I'm sure so it was sufficient back then. Would dread getting into a front end collision against a modern truck though I would be dead!

Will McElroy I don't think they really see a need to. The 6.0 has a great reputation for reliability, and "enough" power. They could easily put the 6.2 in here for more power if there was a demand for more power in the base WT, but there isn't. Not to mention the less reliability that comes with the 6.2.

Andre always says he doesn't like chrome. However chrome can be polished. Painted bumpers need to be repainted and get chipped especially here in CO. They use sand on our roads. A little chrome polish and you can make it look new again, I'll stick with chrome.

I've never aired down an E load range tire for two reasons. Reason 1, having the ability to air them back up. Reason 2, the tires are so stiff they'd nearly have to be flat to get any appreciable performance gain. Also radial tires do not flex like bias ply tires could.

you should be rolling like a 10 speed changing gears when shifting on the fly. up to 55 mph in my power wagon. more so when in neutral when going into low. 3mph rolling. Same for lockers and front sway bar. Also you can shift on the fly going around corners or turning tight. unlock 4x4. easy as shifting a manual on the floor. you can go in and out. reducing your turning radius.

Ok why do the rear tires have more psi than the front? Also, never use 4hi unless you’re using higher speeds. Up or down hill, at very slow speeds always requires 4lo.

I have a question for really anybody who knows. I've noticed in my truck a kind of clicking sound whenever I step on the brake or begin to go forward by pressing the gas. It is not from the inside I am positive about that. I did a little investigating and noticed my driveshaft can turn by just my hand turning it. Is it supposed to do that? My dads truck doesn't but his is newer, I don't know if that makes a difference. I've looked it up and have gotten answers anywhere from it being a new unjoint to it being nothing at all but whenever I hear it I know it isn't a normal sound. And btw, it doesn't happen every time. I know this disruption doesn't help but I explained it the best I could. Tia

Thanks for working to get and for GM to deliver a tough V-8 with 4x4 combo with tow package at an (relatively) affordable price. This is the way my next truck will be. Some vinyl wrap on that front bumper, rip off the chin and I'd be good to go.

Eugen Dinica not at all. They have a series of i believe 10mm bolts in behind the spoiler that fastens it to the rest of the bumper. If you remove those bolts it should practically fall off. The last generation trucks were even easier as they only have fasteners at the ends then the rest just clipped in
