2017 BMW RnineT Urban G/S Review

Ойын-сауық

2017 BMW RnineT Urban G/S Review - I'm a huge fan of the latest breed of "retro" styled bikes and a fan of the BMW GS, so when I heard BMW were releasing an homage to the original GS in the form of an R9T model I jumped at the chance of having a ride, but given I wasn't that impressed with the ride quality of the RnineT Scrambler on off-road tyres, will the urban G/S be any good?
Many thanks to Aldo and Mark at Bahnstormer in Maidenhead for making the bike available to me for review...

Excellent review that I really enjoyed watching. I test rode the Urban GS last week and agree totally that it is a great fun, easy and comfortable bike to ride and that exhaust note is superb, especially the popping as the throttle is closed. The stability in corners with just the basic suspension set up that the bike has shows what a great job the BMW test rider must have done. I didn’t want to give it back either.😀

This is one of the best of your reviews ever! IMO. Not just because of the bike-bit. But the "be-a-tourist-in-your-own-neighbourhood" bit. It's absolutely true! Well done mr Flyer. You've done it again!

Testrode it yesterday. I second your impressions, it's lovely. I never thought the BMW engineers could muster such an awesome sound out of the flat twin (I used to have a 2009 R1200R - same engine, which I quickly sold due to lack of character and sonority), and that's taken me aback a bit. Especially, as you say, compared to its other R9T cousins.

Just watched your review Mr Flyer on this bike and what a great watch! I own an 899 Panigale like you and absolutely love it to bits, however that day is coming when my young 58 years of age tells me to find something more comfortable to ride and enjoy. I’ve just seen one of these advertised at my local Ducati dealer and it’s sure tempting. I must test ride one. I know I’d miss the speed and looks of the 899 but this is also one cool looking bike. Just wish I had the budget to own two bikes! 👍

That is a stunner , I test rode the scrambler in the rain with knobblies and found it dangerous , coupled with poor service at my local bmw dealer meant I ended up with my beloved Africa twin , but if I had the money it would be in my garage straight away just for the looks .. great review as always fella

Wonderful bike, saw the first pics in Q4/16 and right away told my BMW dealer that I would need / must have / non negotiable want want want the very first one coming to the UAE.... and so the first one is mine since 4 weeks. . . Still in the show room as currently with temperatures over 50 degrees (Celsius that is) a wee bit too hot. . . Wunderlich has a great crash guard for both "ears" as well as a little rear luggage rack .... did ride an r100gs for some 12 years in the 90th and can not wait to explore the uae & oman mountain roads in a couple of weeks ... and the "I first" it is .... great pics & commentary TMF ... thank you ;-)

Great review mate! I haven't risen in a long time, but moving to the south of France soon, so I am doing it, no question. The only thing is I don't know what I want. A cafe racer style like the Ninet scrambler, a Harley, a Thriumph, who knows. I have to say a personalized Scrambler BMW sounds really cool for a daily bike. Keep them coming.

Another great review. Was consideting this bike last summer but the price (about 18300$CAD out the door) felt a bit steap considering its not the most practical bike or most equipped. But this week another dealer made me an offer on a fully equipped (though no tachometer or fuel gauge) 2018, I simply couldnt decline. 3000$ off or basically all options free and no preparation fees. Loved the looks of the Scrambler but the Urban GS sounded better, has slightly more travel on the rear shock and overall just stands out from the bunch :) Ive owned bikes from all Jap brands, a ducati, ktm, a couple Triumphs, this is my first beemer at 41. I will also keep my Triumph 865 Scrambler, but looking forward to parking this one next to it!

I have to admit I'm sorely tempted to replace my XSR900 with the Urban G/S... for me the 2 things holding me back are the absence of a fuel gauge and traction control... sasholsuma yes I know... the XSR has got lots going for it. It's got the looks, the performance, handling and electronic aids all at an incredibly reasonable price. It's just that it hasn't got that feeling of solidity and quality of finish my R1200R has, nor the Urban G/S for that matter. Still it's a great bike which I'll keep for a while yet I reckon... so rest easy 😊

I liked the R1150RT I had years ago. And I certainly thought the K1200LT I had was a fine bike. Both the bikes, unfortunately felt top heavy. I do continue have a fondness for the BMWs. Love to add a BMW to my garage and this bugger you rode is a beaut! Unfortunately I can't get the Guzzi's off my mind, I think when I tire of my T120 it will be a V7 III or a V9 Bobber sitting in my garage. Continental TKC-80`s, not great in the mileage category (for me the rear gives me about 2800 miles) ...but I`ve run several sets on my R1200GSA, and there`s not a more confidence inspiring tire out there! Just an opinion obviously, but I absolutely love them ...superb cornering tire as well.

Would love to see a review of the "standard" RnineT. New one has upgraded front suspension. One of the last "analog" bikes left. Not a fan of the artificial ride by wire. To me feeling the throttle butterflies opening is nirvana. It might be down on power compared to S1000R or some other standard bikes... But they lack character to me. Few simple mods and you can get 115 wheel horses out of the old boxer. As always love your indepth reviews, and envy your roads.

Bought one. The bike feels solid & strong industral like construction. The build quality is excellent. Awesome to ride, love the sound of the boxer motor. Has good pick up when you need it. Added a 20 mm wunderlich handle bar riser to sit in a more upright motard postion & smoked front screen. Installed black canvas bmw panier on the right side, very handy, can remove & use as a shoulder bag. Be known , accessories expensive. Smart strategy of bmw to sell basic bike & count on customers purchasing additional accessories that come standard on other bikes. Expensive at 19000.00 down here in Australia . Would I recommend the bike, yes.

You could maybe ask the sales agent to take two photos from the side, one of you with both your feet down showing your reach to the ground, and another with your feet on the pegs while another sales agent holds the bike's front wheel between his/her legs keeping it upright if the bike does not have a center stand when you collect/drop off the bike. You could edit the photos into your videos somewhere. Even though your reach will be unique, it will provide us with a valuable comparison between bikes (eg. you indicate the urban GS was more comfortable than the Scrambler and I notices it comes standard with the higher seat, but how does that slight difference filter through to rider position?)

I took one of these out for a test yesterday as it was the only R nine t my dealer had as a demo, my intention was to buy a standard R nine t and they have now lost a sale. It was fitted with full nobblies. At the start it was fine, both the ride and the weather, and it seemed a great bike, then it started to rain. The combination of knobblies, 110 bhp, high torque, shaft drive and very wet roads do not make for enjoyable riding. If I didn't match the revs perfect on the down change just right (Having had GSA and Multi with quick shifts for the past few years its a skill I've lost) then the whole thing wanted to go sidewards. traction control was cutting in under acceleration even on straights. I had a R100RT many years ago which could show similar traits but a lot less prominent due to lower power and road tyres. It showed me just how good modern electronics are on top end bikes and just how often they must be working behind the scenes, I wouldn't like to come barrelling into a roundabout and drop 3 gears to use engine braking to slow me down on the Urban like i do on the GSA. I've been riding over 40 years and I can't remember the last time i felt so nervous on a bike. A tip to anyone getting one of these don't get them with knobblies on, don't, they may look cool but unless you intend to use them only on dry days they are not. A tip to BMW and their dealers don't get demos with knobblies, in my case you probably lost a sale. Its a speed twin or bonneville for me I think

@@TheMissendenFlyer your probably right, but when I tested the speed twin I instantly felt at home, something I didn't get from the BMW. And The triumph engine grabbed me straight away, for a lump that only has 97bhp (lol I remember when a hot hatch car with 100bhp was something to lust after) the engine is a monster. As you know it pull from anywhere in the rev where as the range bmw needed to rev a bit to get it going.

Looks the part, but I would be interested to what it's like in the wet with those TCK 80's on. Looks like the back of your legs would get soaked.
