The steel Ford OEM replacement has a cutout for oil changes. I installed a Fumoto drain plug and with a short hose is zero mess. Flip the lever, drain , flip the lever back. Granted is does take a little longer to drain, but I'm never in a hurry doing oil change anyway. HL3Z-7222-E steel skid pan W717461-S439 U nuts W500633-S439 Bolts. Pan usually $120-150 on oem ford sites if dealer doesent stock it.

Where did you find a steel OEM replacement? Do you happen to have a part number? Also if you don’t mind me asking, how much was the steel? I would rather spend a little more once and be done.

Excellent info as always!
I feel the main reason these fail is because when you get an oil change, the mechanic will only remove the front bolts and let the shield dangle from the back bolts.

More than likely, I would agree with that.

I cannot agree, I've done all of my own oil changes since new and always remove all 4 bolts and it still happened.

@@kastbarg perhaps try adding some more washers on both sides of each of the holes so that tightening the screws isn’t putting as much pressure on those corners pieces?

I have a 2013 f150 and need the U-clips that the M10 bolts screw into. I have purchased some that were only 1" total length. My factory ones are 1 & 3/16". The shorter ones will not work as they do not clear the metal bracket holes enough. Outside of grinding some material away I thought I would ask if you had a recommendation.

Here is the Amazon equivalent for what is posted above: amzn.to/3z8nzkE
Just curious could you spray bedliner on a new one to make it last 🤔.

If you try it out, let me know what you think of it.
This is a throw away part.Mine ripped over during a heavy snowfall. It does nothing to protect ,as its purely for aerodynamics. If anything, replace it with a proper skid plate or something. Mine has been off for yrs.

Like I mention in my video, if you want metal, more power to ya. Just more work to take off for oil changes.
I'm going to try and plasti-dip the two corners that always tear apart and see if that lasts longer 🤔 I made 2 metal brackets to help support the weight but if I take it to a Ford dealer for an oil change those goobers are just going to be like "what are these things?" 🤪

I thought about adding some large washers to it is not in direct contact to the brackets.

@@DIYBRYJust now I went to a dealer, not the one I bought from (it’s 40 miles away). Looked under 2023 & 2024 models. None of those came with them either. But the off road one had a full steel plate covering the underside

That's nothing but a pain in the butt everytime you have to change the oil. off and on, off and on, off an on. I took mine off and never looked back.

The one I put on, yes. If you want a more durable kind, you can go with metal. Just more of a pain when it comes to changing your oil.
If it was important to be on the truck it would be made of a more durable material and not some crap that absorbs water and deteriorates over a short time

According to Ford, it is supposed to help with wind resistance and provide better fuel efficiencies as a result of less drag. Lightweight to not increase the weight of the vehicle, which is also better for fuel efficiency. Take that for what is worth. Also, the light weight material is/can be better for oil changes for people that want to do it themselves and do not have a way to lift their truck. Better to have that come crashing down on you than a big metal one, when you are on the ground under the truck. Does it actually work? Now, I have not put any of that to the test, but that is why according to Ford.
I'll through it in garbage, keep my money and forget about it.

You do you. Just might incur some unwanted damage as a result. Hopefully not.
A terrible design by Ford. These things are useless after they establish the fuel mileage BS for CAFE standards. It would be a nice to have. But Ford didn't want to pay the extra $15 per part for the hard plastic option.
