This question is for Tommy: when are you going to study the effects of decreasing the air pressure in the tires on your Jeep? that would make for a great episode of diff lock.

Keep in mind the wheelbases make a big difference on gnarly camber. Jeep CJ's and Wranglers were engineered for mobility and still hold true to that engineering perspective. The Toyota is more designed as an everyday passenger vehicle than for offroad mobility.

When I watched this with the General AT2s, I was encouraged to try them on my 87 YJ. I did and what a pleasure both on the street and trail. We just were hunting in the High Uintahs of Utah and awoke to a foot and 1 half of snow that came after 2 days of slime producing rain. My tracks were the only ones upt the very steep trail and the only ones to get to the top of the mountain (including ATV/UTVs) There were attempts but they had to turn around. Mine is the 6 cylinder 5 speed. I've got no lockers or special equipment. The old Jeep just amazed me and the tires went everywhere the more aggressive tires went. During the week, we experienced axle deep bogs and steep slime as well as rock. Those AT2s are unbelievable. You really should talk more about them.

I was going to purchase a Jeep GC Hemi. But after years of trying to make excuses as to why I keep facing reliability issues, we purchased the 2015 4Runner Limited and its the best decision ever!! a true work vehicle, it's got that suspension that beautifully adjusts itself on turn that makes it feel like as though your in a plane when it turns ( I think it's for the limited edition only) and a self adjusting suspension. I towed a large uhual trailer and I maxed out the 2 axel trailer. The 4runner didn't dip below 2.5 inches. I did close to 1800 miles nonstop. NO issues with heating, breaks, signs. something that Jeep was never able to provide.

To many people are taking this way to seriously. I have owned both vehicles while interesting to watch it's not realistic to compare them. For example drive that jeep at 95 mph (if it could) down a hwy. Or even comparing them as daily drivers 4Runner hands down. Tires are a huge deal off road. Could go on and on. Driving style is another issue itself. So while fun to compare and watch it's just not practical or reasonable. So ok don't get butt hurt. 😁

I agree. The 4Runner is a larger and heavier SUV. It still has the same amount of traction (4 wheels) to use to haul itself up the hill, so the weight is working against it. A more apples to apples comparison would be a 4 door Jeep Cherokee vs the 4Runner. But it was still an interesting video. I'm surprised the 4Runner did as well as it did.

I really like the "affordable" concept behind Diff Lock, and I think it's important to remind people who are commenting to mod the heck out of your Jeep the line about "Affordable off-road adventure". I have a 97 4Runner myself, and it was very much a budget build up of my daily driver when I started doing things to it 5 years ago. I think a really cool point you can really drive home (pun) in this video is that a decent set of aggressive tires will greatly enhance your off-road capabilities in a near-stock Jeep or 4Runner platform. Even before I put on a 3" lift, I got the same set of Yokohama Geolander A/TS that it looks like you had and it really turned my truck into a very capable bone-stock off-roader! Over the 5 years of grad-school budget modding, I was able to get a 3" lift, and it's perfect for what I need. It was still my daily driver up until a few weeks ago, so I didn't want to do anything too crazy to it. Plus, my off-road needs aren't crazy since I'm also in Colorado like going off-road mainly for the harder to get to primitive camping, trailhead access to climbs, etc., and less the rock-crawling up Lake Como busting a CV axle kind of stuff. Keep up the good work, and hope to see you out on the trail!

Roman messed up by putting the 4runner in 4Lo. When you drive in 4Lo your vehicle/wheels create more torque, 4Lo is the opposite of 4Hi as it creates less traction, and it wouldn't be suitable for driving in snow, ice, mud, or dry roads. 4Lo is meant for high incline rock climbs, when towing, and maneuvering a heavy trailer.

Yeah you guys know the Jeep won both contests. I love Toyota and I like Jeeps but I am also a big fan of old school off road tech, it just works and if the Jeep had a locker it wouldn't even be a contest. On a side note I have had a couple sets of those Grabber AT2's and they are nothing short of amazing. (Especially in the snow)

It was a wonderful day today, so went up to the Switzerland Trail (another of Colorado's many abandoned narrow gauge railroad road beds). While the temps were nice and in the low sixties, it also made the snow like greased snot. Gold Mine Hill, fail. Could only go 2/3 of the way to the curve. For those of you who have not seen this hill in person covered in snow, you don't know squat. That rock obstacle in the video, fail. Muddy approach, and my wheel base put me having three tires trying to go up and over at the same time. No, I didn't air down, was too lazy. Spoke to Tommy. Very nice kid and very willing to strike up a conversation. Good job Roman.

  • @jbatacan2

+Frank White I think the one thing stopping him even if he were to do it that way was the articulation from the increased length of the 4 runner, it was putting him in both ruts at the same time giving him the least amount of traction possible without the diff locked so he was spinning both sets at the same time. The jeep on the other hand crossed each rut independantly giving him a little more control over the contact patch. I notice this with my friends 2000 tacoma and my 76 cj.

All with a manual transmission.

Very cool. I go out with a friend with a Jeep. The weight of the vehicle and length give him an advantage along with the wide big tires and the fact that he is a well seasoned driver. Neither of us have rear lockers. I have a CDL and A-track though. A lot of fun. A good driver in a stock Jeep can go just about anywhere.
