2016 Nissan Leaf | CarGurus Test Drive Review

With 6 years under its belt, the Nissan Leaf is getting rather long in the electric tooth. Competitors have populated the automotive landscape with all-electric options matching the Leaf for style and substance, so Nissan has upped battery capacity for the 2016 SV and SL trims for a full 104 miles of range-a 23-mile increase over that of the old battery pack-and added a quick-charge port for the mid-level SV. I have almost 200 quick charges logged and haven't seen any measure battery degradation. The trick to only quick charge what you need. I rarely quick charge to more than 65% of capacity, which is why I think it doesn't place much of a load on the battery.

    The lack of recalls and problems and the 7 yr evolution and debugging of the Leaf, make it the safe choice for long term ownership. The large number sold translates into service people who know the car. Like the original VW Bug.. continued refinement is the key to success. Note.. the new battery is so much better that the capacity warranty increased to 8 yrs from 5 yrs.. and to 100K miles from 60K. Normal charging is now so fast, that when you stopped for lunch with 68% an hour and a half would have gotten you into the 90% range... given that..whats the big deal about high speed chargers ? Momma likes shopping and wine tasting.. walk around a bit.

    All good points, and I even think you're underestimating the normal charging. The fast charging is just a way to assuage people's range anxiety, and it really does make longer trips possible.

    @@MikeDPerkins long trips are also possible using RV stop points if you buy the cable that allows you to connect to the 240v plugs available at thos eplaces, charge in 4 hrs for the 30kw battery, maybe less below 80%. that is quite a bit but if it s a leisurely trip those RV parks are usually in scenic places.

    I love the leaf! Used lease returns are currently selling under $10,000 making it quite an enticing buy. However, because of issues like battery degradation I fear that my used car payment will outlive the cars reasonable battery range. I could replace the battery for around $6000 but then it just raises the debate of buying one in the first place. Driving at less than 70 on 580 isn't smart. People need to know what real-world range is in these cars. Same as when I test a gasoline vehicle. The EPA may rate it at ___mpg, but that's on a perfectly flat surface with no wind and all the windows up and cruising at 54 and and and ... I like to let people know what they can actually expect to get when using the vehicle like they'd actually use it, not using every trick in the book to get the best mpg/range they can.

    I'm going to get my rant out of my system. Just yesterday I saw a new public charging station in my suburban area of St. Louis, MO. I was really excited when I saw the Nissan no charge to charge sign. After about 5 phone calls today to my local dealer and the main Nissan Customer Service department they said NO they would not give me the free charging card. I bought my Leaf in May and the program only started in September so a big NO exceptions. The rate to pay with a credit card at the charging station is really high. Major bummer for me.

    The Note in particular was the model I rented on three separate occasions. I found it comfortable, voluminous in cargo capacity, same Nissan reliability and thrifty as I drove all over the Texas hill country in air conditioned comfort. Oh yes, the Note didn't cost anyone in federal tax credits either.

    Hey, nice video. For your question on how many fast-chargers in our area: 5 in the entire posh and modern city of Miami, including 1 at a Nissan dealer. In the same area, Tesla has 17 location, with many of each location having multiple Tesla charger outlets and several of their superchargers. Tips: - Nissan Leafs hate highways. The 30kWh Leaf can easily drive 130 miles if you can spare 5 minutes and take the scenic back roads. - Nissan's claim of capacity loss due to fast-charging should be taken in perspective. Idaho National Lab fast-charged a Leaf twice a day and drove it 50K miles for a total loss of 3% vs lower level charges. Bottom line: it doesn't significantly affect performance while being very useful to longer trips. Reference: energy.gov/sites/prod/files/2015/01/f19/dcfc_study_fs_50k.pdf - Don't rely too much on the range meter, aka: guess-o-meter. It starts overly optimistic and quickly drops off from there, disappointing and/or giving drivers so-called range anxiety. Had you reduced your speed on the way back, the range would have adjusted upward. For a round trip, it's useful to also look at the charge percentage; if you're more than 50% before starting on your way back, you'll be fine.

    13 months with a 2012 Mitsubishi miev 16kwh battery. Purchased used for $6,800 with 6,000 miles on it using CarGurus. Level2 charging at home +3.4kw rooftop solar system. Zero dollars "fuel" cost for the 7,000 miles we've driven so far. Only used quick charge 2 times to get car here from Pittsburgh. Like the Leaf large trunk area with back seats folded down. Haul 15 bags of mulch per load, lots of building materials for home remodeling, helped move a friends fragile glass etc to her new house. Rated 62 miles charge we consistently get 80 to 92 in warm weather and 70 to 80 in winter. Higher mileage due to living in flat area of northeast Ohio + quickly learned how to drive electric using little or no brakes while primarily driving on secondary roads which are common here. Planning on dumping our second car Jetta ICE when we find a good deal on a bolt or similar car. Electric is so easy and intuitive with minimal maintenance. No gas station, oil change, etc. We've been converted to the church of electrification!

    So i live in baltimore area of maryland & to be completely honest i only know of a single charging location anywhere around my area & technically its not in baltimore its on the out skirts sbout 5-6 miles into the county aka glen burnie & that's at a walgreens. There are 2 or 3 chargers that come off of one tree like device. But then again this could be that i only noticed that one from going there, but i def dont go looking for charging stations seeing as how i drive a 7500 lbs yukon xl that absolutely destroys any hopes of fuel economy. That 5.3 vortec is getting me about 11-13 mpg's on my commute from baltimore to dc every day & u know what i wouldn't ever give my girl up. Mainly bc if my wife ever kicks me out i can pull the 3rd row out & camp in it 🤔. Plus it'll blow through any thing u put in its way. That being said this leaf is one oogly mofo, but i wouldnt mind using an ev for if nothing else my commute to & from work. Thats 100 miles a day that i dnt put on my yukon

    The Kansas City area has a reasonable amount of DCQCs. Check out www.plugshare.com/ and filter for the orange. They're mostly ChargePoints and after some initial hiccups, they're pretty reliable now. Just as important, there are lots of L2 EVSEs all over town, so this is a great place to have a LEAF, even a 2012 with 80% battery capacity left.

    The not so secret sauce to this whole thing is, adding more quick charger options and multiple ones at each of those sites, because if you think of it, if gas stations had the same issue, like 1 or 2 pumps at most at each "station" add the fact that not every city has even 1 quick charging station in your vicinity. Even ICE vehicles would be frustrating to own, I dont care what the would be range is for any given one of those, if you dont have the convenience to "fuel" up at almost every other block... people would be killing each other for the chance to fuel up wherever there was one, as a matter of fact I think this happened already back in the 60s or so, where there was a shortage of gas and people were scrambling to find gas stations that had "gas" LOL .. now, I understand it is not exactly the same right now to those days in terms of supply and demand for EVs as the ratio of EV to ICE street presence is far too low, but in a small sort of way, we EV drivers are daily facing that sort of scenario, hopefully things get better otherwise, the whole EV thing can take far longer than many of us are willing to put up with.

  • @christopherhamilton5557

    @christopherhamilton5557

    Johannes Lopez The good thing is we EV owners can “gas up” at home!!! Free quick charging when ur out and about is great ( like at a Nissan dealer for example) but most days, I wouldn’t drive more than 30-40 miles, so it’s not too much of an issue. If I need more, I hafta fire up the ICE vehicle unless I know there’s a facility available. To your point though, dependable (and inexpensive!) infrastructure will lead to greater adoption of EV’s. Highway rest stops would be ideal places along the interstates! They are typically about every like 40-60 miles? Just a thought...

    The 44/44 days should be no problem if you've got a few hours to charge in between. My only concern would be getting stuck in traffic. Hell, even the 98-mile trip should be do-able if you've got several hours to toss a charge on, but don't expect much of a recharge from a 110v for only a few hours.

Its utility, frugality, cost of ownership and resale simply cannot be beat for the price.

    I drove a Versa Note from SF to LA and then to Joshua Tree and back, and I wasn't very impressed honestly. But you're absolutely right, if you're looking for a longer trip, the Leaf or any of the electric alternatives probably aren't a good option. However, for around town you'd be set without having to pay for gas anymore, and if you need to go out of town, there's always renting. Much cheaper then buying a second car if you're only making longer trips a few times a year.

    Actually I did get one through a clean air program here in LA (They basically paid for the car). I did a lot of driving in it and basically went from 90 miles per charge to 60 miles per charge in just 2 years /80k miles. I think it’s because of all the fast charging I had to do. I sold the car after that. I still think the LEAF is an awesome car, it’s just better suited as an around town runabout or a commuter.
