2016 Mazda CX-9 ENGINEERING REVIEW w/ Mazda Engineer Dave Coleman (3 of 3)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Mazda engineer and racecar driver, Dave Coleman takes over the show for a deep engineering dive on the 2016 Mazda CX9. Like our TECH REVIEW, but with the guy that actually worked on creating the Mazda CX-9! He starts with their goals then walks through the engine development - explaining the whys and theories applied to their rationale of a turbo 4 and Mazda's particular solution in the Mazda CX9 - then moves onto driving dynamics and even presents you with his own sorta research question . . .

As someone who has owned 3 Mazdas (Mazda3, RX-8 & CX-7), I believe you. My concern with the turbo is not with the numbers, but rather it's reliability & fuel economy. In 2013, when the 2.3L MZR turbo was axed and SkyActiv was introduced, the brand's credibility went up (top 4 reliable brands with Consumer Reports, EPA ranked Mazda as most fuel efficient brand). Hopefully, this new SkyActiv turbo will buck the trend of carmakers producing turbos that don't quite deliver, like Ford. Ironic, since Ford licensed the MZR engines & evolved them into the Ecoboost & Duratec lineup.

Thanks to Dave Coleman and MotoMan for putting these videos together. Dave, I enjoy your explanations on all the technical aspects as I too am a nerdy type. I am trying to convince my wife to get a CX-9 for our next family hauler. She wants a Dodge Ram because she's had a 2 door version before and now wants a 4 door for our family and she loves the torque of the Hemi. I'm trying to convince her we can have almost as much torque but without the fuel economy penalty and a more enjoyable driving experience. It's only me that cares about how fun a car is to drive though. She loves the straight line pull of that Hemi...

Tell her the Ram is one of the most unreliable vehicles on sale and Mazda is one of the most reliable, according to consumer reports. Also, the Mazda is much safer than the Ram.

I think the majority of people out there will look at horsepower numbers and all that first, but if you guys display a dyno graph to show the area under the curve and maybe a comical way of demonstrating the power of instant torque, maybe you can win more customers. Also explain power/weight ratios. Another way is to just win car comparisons like the way you have. We will see how the CX-9 really performs when it goes head to head with the competition. Just want to say my CX-5 is my first Mazda and you guys have won me over. I took it up Angeles Crest and it was so much fun. I look forward to hearing about any new stuff that Mazda puts out.

Real world operation is to me more relevant than those bragging about 0 - 60 times and how to throw it into corners and have the tail come out. Motor writers especially seem to think the only thing that is important is spinning the wheels and will it go faster than the opposition. Quality, engineering, economy and fit for purpose is the relevant thing for me. The explanation of the Sky Active system was very easy to understand.

I really enjoyed this engineering review. Everything was explained very well. And I believe what you're saying. It's instant torque that gives you instant acceleration, horse power is just a derivate of torque. You at Mazda created a gas powered car that behave like a diesel one. Without particulate. But it is almost too big vehicle for the narrow Mediterranean streets where I come from. Like it very much almost in love with it but is too big. And at the end thanks for the splendid review.

its up to the marketing department to communicate the advantages of the design decisions. if the engine makes less peak horsepower, but makes passing on the highway easier, there's your pitch. "the quietest car we've ever made" is another example of pitching to the advantages of the design decisions. normal people can get that stuff if it's emphasized properly by marketing and advertising.

What really impresses me about Mazda is that they always seem to be thinking outside the box. I'm not sure but which other car manufacturer has 3 exhaust ports for a four cylinder engine?

  • @fenx42
    @fenx428 жыл бұрын

I start off: I test drove the new CX-9 at a local Mazda dealership and I'm sold. as soon as my BMW lease comes up I am getting one of these. The problem I see is people are going to see '4 cylinder' think it doesn't have power. Most people I've talked to tend to see 4 cyl, V6, V8, V10, etc; HP is beyond them; they have no idea if a 'good horsepower number' is 10 or 100000. I am coming from a BMW 328i GT with the N20 engine (2.0L Turbo 4 Cyl) and I am buying this vehicle BECAUSE of the Turbo 4 Cyl. I think if Mazda can distract people enough get people to simply drive the vehicle they will be very surprised and happy with the power. The new CX-9 and it has more power than you really need in most situations; its not a race car but it has plenty. The competition such as the Toyota Highlander with a 3.5L V6 or the Chevy Traverse with the 3.6L V6 have more HP on paper, but the torque and HP don't come in until such high RPM that it has less useful power. Really the only thing I wish Mazda would have done is go with an 8 Speed transmission, those extra gears really make a huge difference.I'd be surprised if Mazda doesn't throw an 8 speed into this in the next couple years. Unfortunately every 9 speed transmission I've drove has been pretty bad, the the way an AT works its almost impossible to get 9 properly spaced gears; 8 however seems to work well.

I absolutely believe and understand your design goals and am not only impressed but curious to see how many other engines will adopt your method of 'trickery'. ;) However, I think your strongest asset in getting people (the masses at large) to enjoy and trust what you've done will be to get their butts in the driver's seat back to back with a more vanilla engine. My only real question having been a previous Mazda owner; what do you foresee the reliability of this technology and your new body engineering to be under heavy daily commuter type use?

I'm a car guy, and I brought a Mazda 6. So HP wasn't as important to me as fuel economy and drivability. I also own a Mazda 3, and a Mazda 5. My wife is ready to get out of the Mazda 5, and into something bigger. The CX-9 seems to fit the bill. While I love to get the new Top of the line Signature edition. I couldn't justify the cost premium. So I'd take the FWD Touring with Touring package, and call it a day. My wife would be happy, and I would be happy. Besides I have my 1400 CC sport bike, and track days for speed and horse power.

Thanks for the information, Dave. Unfortunately, I don't think that the general public will give this a chance (I hope I am wrong, by the way). Otherwise the automobile industry wouldn't be in the horsepower race that it is currently experiencing. I get into it all the time but always end up giving up. For some reason, people love to know that they are sitting on a lot of power, even though they know they will never use it. Case in point, a couple months ago I took a 7 hour drive in a new mustang (22 miles on the odo), and I still had to set my cruise at 74 miles/hour. Well, it was either that or ending up in jail. I Chose option 1. I hope, however, that Mazda continues to build great cars. We've owned 7 of them in the past 17 years, between my brothers and myself. I owned 2 of them myself until last month, when mine was totaled in an accident. The other one is a 2005 mazda 3 with 186k on the odo. I still drives smoothly, without any rattles or squeaks. And everything still works well in the car, including the original HID bulbs. I do hope that Mazda will invest into making its cars quieter and give all its non-turbo 4 cylinder engines more low end torque. Salesmen who believe in the brand and know its products would also be helpful.

I think the engine is great. The bigger question is its design which looks sharp in 2016 but in 2018 many areas may have already be obsolete (there is no digital dashboard, the centre screen is way too small, no 3rd-row air cond (Mazda please take cue from Volvo XC90 and possibly to include air cond at B pillar), the rear lamp when the brake is engaged, looked hideous and small, the turn signal is in bulb instead of full LED (why?)...there is no cargo cover when the 3rd row is stowed away, the 2nd row chair is difficult to be moved away to allow easy access to 3rd row etc). The list is not exhaustive but you get my idea Mazda. I would like to see more improvement in that area and please continue to provide more useful torque at low RPM. Cheers

I really love this Mazda CX9, but I would appreciate if somebody can answer a question: Is a 4 cyl Engine like this, durable enough for a SUV?. If you plan to have long family trips, in addition to the daily basis use (driving on snow or slippery roads in winter etc in a city). Is this type of engine with only 4 cyl a reliable, durable and powerful enough engine for getting a performance like a conventional SUV V6 (Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Nissan Murano or Pathfinder?) . The main asset that I have noticed in an engine V6 is the high durability and power kept along the years (10 until more than 15 years), I wondered how reliable and durable is the new engine in the Mazda CX9 2016. Thanks in advance for any response

So FWD car being lighter and little more efficient on dry pavement ( 90% of my driving ) runned on 93 Octane while on 255 wide tires should be quicker than AWD equivalent ? Question on the potential cons of this torque first approach: When pushing the gas pedal hard at what point it's torque down low begins to run out of steam and lower HP number does not have enough power to take over so rate of acceleration slows down? Does that happen at around 45 or more like 60 mph? How sticky are these new tires, are 18 same kind as 20" Why no 20" on Touring package??? I Would much rather have nice leatherette than leather but have 20" on touring at same price.... Co mon Mazda keep sharper driving car for lower trim level....

Will a regular consumer look beyond the specs, possibly due to the look. but that's where advertising comes in. when there is something new it is difficult to have someone tell you what it does and much easier to show them. 0-60 and quarter mile is engrained into the consumer. Might be good to take after Chevrolet with actual consumer responses. Most vehicles probably don't get floored and run out to redline. even have a timed set course for someone to drive each car for the first time and have the Mazda go first as the person wouldn't know the track well and would presumably be slower. then into the competition hopefully the result would be the Mazda completes the course quicker showing in real world driving the cx9 out performs the rest. I just test drove one and really enjoyed the drive even compared to the likes of the 2017 Arcadia Denali.
