The traction management system on the grand Cherokee require staying on the gas. Getting off the gas doesn't allow the system to work best.
This dude does not know how to drive. I've had my wife's jeep in some serious mud and snow and not once did I have to get my power wagon to pull it out

Did you not listen at all to what he was saying?! The whole point of the test was to to go slow on purpose to see how the 4wd system reacted and handled different situations and articulations. Anyone could have just floored it up the hill with momentum but that wouldn't have shown anything as far as how the vehicle adapted to different situations and wheel spin etc.
It's obvious that this guy does NOT know how to drive a vehicle to get out of tough situations. It's not just about the vehicle, use your head and judgement, simple physics dude. I don't own a Jeep but you did that vehicle no justice, whether tires are summer or not.

That's correct, I have been off-road all over Australia, where most of our off-road destinations make tracks like this look laughable. I currently own a WK2 Grand, and despite the fact that it is undoubtedly the least capable rig I have owned, it is still surprisingly good, especially if as you pointed out it is driven by someone with a clue. Understanding the mechanics of a particular vehicle and using them your/its advantage go a long way, also smart use of the vehicles weight and torque will get almost any vehicle through almost anything. Sad to see video like these ( these TFLCar guys all seem utterly clueless ) giving people with little to no experience the wrong ideas and setting bad examples.

The Grand Cherokee is easily the best looking SUV in its class. I honestly wouldn't be able to take it off road, it's too beautiful.
Put it in 4low from the beginning and the traction control locks the dif and axles automatically when 1 wheel spins. Amazing system.

Exactly. The first time he got stuck. Only one of two rear wheels was even spinning. Should have been in Mud Mode right off the start. Rear locker engaged and no traction control

So, the Grand Cherokee will take virtual rookies up nearly any hill they get onto, if only they put it into the most capable mode BEFORE they get stuck. And all that on all-season tires. Sounds excellent to me!
As noted, those tires are worthless off road. Nothing extreme about gold mine in this test, barely any snow.

The Raptor and Power Wagon are both trucks, purpose designed. The G.C. is an all-purpose machine, quiet, comfortable, and yet with amazing off-road, towing, and fuel economy strengths. Comparing it to those two pickups is just plain silly. Especially with those dorky 20-inch rims and highway tires, which EVERYBODY puts on upgraded Grand Cherokees. Why, I don't know. Might as well buy a Durango.

If you watch their other reviews, they NEVER change the tires on loaner cars. That is the point of these tests, to take the loaners out without ANY modifications, and see what they can do. That's why they also don't use momentum to get up hills. They are trying to evaluate the AWD systems and suspension systems.
4WD system was turning all four tires, you can't do much if you're running racing slicks off-road. Thank you for the video!
To all those commenting on their "tire choice", they are doing REAL WORLD TESTING. They are showing you what you get out of the box when you purchase a new vehicle, not what you can do after you add things to it, that's not the business they are in. They use what the manufacturers gives them to test and review. They mention often how if a vehicle had better tires it would do better. So all you "experts" out there who are so quick to comment, thank you for your wisdom and your total ignorance of what their mission is. TFL.
The "off-road" package (at least at my local dealership) comes with BF Goodrich all terrains for the 18 inch rims.
One of the things I can’t stand about all these off-road videos is when they do it with stock street tires. A good set of all terrains makes a world of difference.

Like the new guy. looking forward to more of his reviews. But Nathan please send all your road testers on a extensive off road driving course. Kind of get it, if you are testing as 'normal inexperienced off roaders' but it would be a better review if the testers had the skills to maximise the potential of the vehicles they are testing. :)

Thanks for the review and video! Like many others that commented about tires, I agree. The factory wheels and tires setup is mostly intended for highway and some gravel roads driving. I would not want to attempt any intermediate or expert off roading with that setup. But for the purpose of this particular video I understand that you guys tested this Jeep as it comes from factory. That is a good real world test and an overview of what to expect when rolling with factory setup. We have the same version of the Jeep and one of the first things that we did was to swap out the wheels to a small diameter wheel and put on a set of AT tires.
A note about the "EcoDiesel" ... about six weeks I bought a 2016 Ram 1500 CrewCab Ecodiesel in the "Outdoorsman" flavor and one morning (with 700 miles on the Odometer) went out to start it and it was dead-dead-dead ... had it towed to the dealership where the diagnosis was a frayed wiring harness ... you guessed it .... after fifteen days in the service bay, still waiting for parts ... must be on a raft from Italy? ....

nice rig.. but fairly lame video imo.. its just a hill. my overland goes on actual trails and it does awesome with quadra drive.
First of all, I love the show! Love what you guys do and how you present the videos. The only request i have is if you guys would mention build quality, which directly relates with reliability.. Maybe you could mention J.D. power ratings or something.
lmfao. Love how the car stalls out and they immediately cut to the engine shot.
Love to see this with a Quadra Drive 2 Grand Cherokee instead. Quadra Trac 2 uses the brakes to stop wheel slip, quadra drive 2 uses e-lockers, and 4 low everything is locked from the get go no computer control. It's a much better system.

Mine has 3 e-differentials, front, centre and rear. But mine is the WK 2005 Diesel.

+iVlog All WK Grand Cherokee 4x4s are always fulltime AWD, so yes the transfer case has a differential. However 4Lo is a partime 4x4 system.

+samus989 If I understand correctly, with the QD II system that is in the WK2s, only the rear diff gets locked. The front axles only has traction control. I'm not even sure the front is limited-slip. they need to call it QD III. Or better yet, QD .5. I have an 03 Overland with the original QD system. They don't "lock" but it gets pretty darn close. I've been through deep mud & snow on Goodyear Wrangle HPs and only got stuck when the mud was up over the axle.

Standard on the Overland is QT2. Optional QD2 (or with off road adventure group) gets you limited slip rear locker. Front limited slip began with the original QD system in the WJ, and continued with the WK. The front limited slip was done away with for the current gen WK 2. And yes, those stock Bridgestones suck as they are just basic all season tires found on sedans.

Correct. The QDII system on the WK2 is not the same as on the WK. The WK QDII system can really fully lock the differentials, but the one on the WK2 only has traction control on the front. Sad.
Gorgeous trail and great looking Jeep, but first order of business would be upgrading those tires.

+TrailRecon They don't own these vehicles they just test them. They have to give them back so others can drive them, They wouldn't be able to change out the tires. Seems like all these new expensive vehicles come with garbage tires for some reason.

guys first of all I love your videos. I really do, and you do a great job. Second of all, I know that you sometimes have to take the vehicle they offer not necessarily the exact model you'd prefer. So thirdly, this review should've been of the same vehicle but with the off road adventure II package which has the skid plates but much more importantly, the smaller wheels / off road tires. So I think the poor JGC was set up to fail, unfortunately. Would love to see the Trail Rated re-test of the above. Just Sayin'I have the 2012 JGC V8 with the Trail Rated badge, looking for same performance but (much) better gas mileage which I think is what the diesel offers. Love what you guys do, please keep up the good work.
I took my stock (2015) wrangler 2 door (sport) up here the other day. I had no issue at all getting up any of this including the last part.
I would love to see videos of the lower tier QuadraTrac 1. Works essentially the same as the QT2 and QD2 systems except it doesn't have 4lo or the rear ELSD.
An Overland, on 20s. That might be the worst combo on the GC that still has the ORA2 package. The best combo on the GC at the moment (until the Trailhawk comes out again) is a Limited with the ORA2 package on 18s, better tires (still only all seasons) and less low hanging trim. Come back and do this again next year with a GC Trailhawk ;)

IF the WK2 had the ORA package it would not have 20's to begin with Offroad Adventure 2 packages automatically got the 18" wheel package

I got my wife a 2019 grand Cherokee and we have a pretty long driveway to get to our house. It's up hill and gravel. An her jeep does amazing going up and down it in the snow. I have a 2018 ram power wagon and her jeep does just as good as my truck. At our farm I was moving some tree stands. I used her jeep and it did amazing in the mud. I put good year Wrangler tires on her jeep and it's a great vehicle
These vehicles in sand are the most impressive thing I've ever seen. Called buddy up with his 03 grand Cherokee. Mind blown.
You guys really ought to test the Hercules Terra Trac AT II tires. put them on my wifes 08 liberty and the traction in the snow and mud is amazing! plus the quiet nature and 60000 treadwear warranty are awesome!
The stock tires suck on ALL of these cars. I test drove this Jeep and the Land Rover Discovery. Both are amazing on and off road. People who buy them for off road use know which tires to fit. The main target audience however are soccer mums who go diaper shopping and the USP to them is "This car is safe, even in Winter" :(
So Jeep puts a state of the art 4wd system with Bridgestone Ecopia's? What were they thinking?

They were thinking that most people that buy these will never go off road and would rather have a quiet comfortable ride. Which most people dont actually off road with these, even if thats what they are designed for.
is this a new guy to do reviews and stuff? I haven't seen a lot of videos in the past few weeks.. but i think i have seen him with Roman a few times. Hope he gets to do more.

Hey nice video guys. I thought overland comes with ELSD and qudra drive 2 standard NOT qudra track. There quite different systems. Iv got 2014 overland that came standard with qudra drive.. Maybe Australian specs r different to what u guys get in States

It's called a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland High Altitude. It has the Summit appearance but no overland stitching or summit stitching. I should know b/c I own one in black. I also still have the window sticker
Pretty respectable video. I esp like that you pointed out how inadequate the OEM tires are for the test. I am surprised a little though... kinda though the Jeep would make it. I would suggest next time, using all of the capabilities of the vehicle BEFORE you tear up the path. Likely would have made it I bet. Who knows lol
Wise you guys could do a video testing the different modes on the grand Cherokee with the CDL on
Just adding some info about low range while off road. Had a Jeep event this passed weekend in Florida and I could not believe the misinformation about low range. Any time off road where you are climbing over things or on a grade, you should always be in Low range. It puts less stress on the entire drivetrain and is better for the vehicle.
Like too see this done with GC trackhawk with mud tires! Send it!
I'm relatively certain this is the Summit model, given the lack of front recovery hooks and the flattened mufflers in the rear. It also has the Summit badge on the tailgate (visible at 1:53). Not a big deal in terms of off road ability vs the Overland but just something to note.

What got you around that turn is the clutch packs being locked when you put it in 4lo.

That's why I bought my G.C. with 18 inch wheels and semi-serious rubber. Plus, you guys are missing the full story on the quadra-lift suspension: There are actually five different positions, some of which can be manually controlled, and some of which are automatically changed by the system. Park/exit (yes, you can actually be moving slowly with this lowest setting), "aero mode" for highway cruising, "normal ride height (which is automatically lowered to aero at highway speeds), and then Off Road 1 and Off Road 2. Most people go with the silly 20 inch rims and highway tires, which in my mind, means you might as well buy a Toyota Highlander.
Could you guys test a grand cherokee again, but with the full trail rated package (locking rear diff) and 18" wheels instead of those 20's? Would love to see it in action without the snow handicap too
So there's no locking differential? Is it an option or should I forget about it?
So far this Jeep is still working, do it slowly and oh! The Cherokee name is under-appreciated now. Got an inch of snow> you need this.. Nice suspension travel for a Jeep... Really the best.. Yall get that?

I really think people underestimate what they're seeing through a screen. Add the fact it had snowed and was still coming down added to the difficulty. In my opinion, the Grand Cherokee, goes all the way in dry conditions.
Nathan or Roman could have done it! Come on Andre, you should have taken the wheel!
Chrysler did a good job with this engine. Better then what GMC is offering in their Canyon diesel pickup... Might have to go the Grand Cherokee route.
Besides the obvious tire issue maybe you should test them on the same trail in the same weather conditions.
Lowering and rising the car a few times, i think would help when you're stuck in the snow.
Is that a EcoDiesel-specific shifter? Or is that a 2016 GC shifter?
These are great vehicles that seem like they will become maintenance nightmares in 10-12 years. Too much complicated gadgetry. The diesel is intriguing. I wonder what the range is.

The diesel will start messing up with more miles with dpf filter clogging and random def sensors needing replaced

Jeep has one of the most advance one of the best 4 wheel drive systems in mine opinion but I was a lil mad that it almost got stuck in something that a Jeep with locking rear end should do in 2 wheel drive with good A/T tires.
My wife had a '15 GC Overland EcoDiesel (even the same color) and it was an awesome awesome car, but the reliability was shocking! Regular visits to the dealer for unrelated faults, twice of which it had to go on the back of a tow truck. Traded it before the warranty ran out...

Similar issues. Exhaust leak that pushed exhaust into the cab. Wife and kids got very sick. Jeep stepped up and bought it back. Didn't even have 60k on it yet.

It's a Jeep, it probably would have made it using acceleration and having it in snow mode. When the jeep is in snow mode it puts the car into 2nd so you don't create wheel spin, the why you got stuck having it in low gear and getting stuck in 3in of snow. Smh

I’m binge watching all your reviews as I’m in the market for a Grand Cherokee Overland. What I don’t understand from your reviews is that you test the cars as they come. Ie: keep the road tyres on. This is so unfair to Jeep and it’s capabilities. Sure if you buy the car and keep the road tyres on, then it’s most certainly a family soccer run vehicle. BUT ANY PERSON TAKING IT ON A TRAIL LIKE YOUR TEST, would at the very least put an all terrain tyre on. Why not do that and show people just how amazing it is. After all, you put full-on off road tyres on the Touareg. And yes.... we spell tyres correctly. Not tires

If you buy it, and immediately discard the factory tires and replace them with more offroad capable tires, you might as well try to get the Offroad Adventure package to begin with. Replacing the tires is a $1,000 activity unless you can get some cash back for the original tires.

You guys say in the video that this jeep is equipped with the quadra trac 2 system. Why don't you guys test one with the more advanced quadra drive 2 system and see how it does.
Sadest thing is that the "stuck" part CLOSE to the tree was fake. Ok, it was stuck, but rock crawl mode did not save You. Nothing against video. Just show real facts. Thank You for Your work and effort!
with winter tires this would be a whole different story
You said you were in an Overland model, but that blacked out trim, Summit lower rear end and black rims tells me that you are in a High Altitude model. Get those facts right. lol

the High Altitude package is appearance only...Overland tells you about the running gear. I have a Summit Ecodiesel with the High Altitude package...with BADASS Blizzak tires(about to be changed for summer)

+Jacob Walls That "package" in the video has Summit front and rear fascias. The website has it listed as its own model. Maybe it is an Overland with Summit fascias and blacked out trim, but Jeep markets it as a separate model.

Jeeps are great 4 wheel drive vehicles even the ones that are trail rated are better. I think a lot of jeeps could use better tires for off-roading. Tires really do go a long way when you're off roading

maybe do the same route with the correct tires to compare.
The other problem with this video is you had the traction control off. Which is why it spinning out of control
Joking ? It makes no sense to use summer tires and the 20 inch rim on an off road track during winter when demonstrating the Jeep 4x4 system which is proven to be one of the best in stock cars. In winter at least you should change to winter tires or better for that hill to adequate off road wheels. Anyway - like your tests. Thanks.
