2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel Takes on the Extreme Ike Gantlet Towing Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel is perhaps the best towing Jeep you can buy. The 3.0L ECODiesel is a torque monster that should be great for towing. In a brand new Ike Gauntlet Max extreme towing test review, we see just how well it handles America's highest and steepest highway towing over 5,700 pounds up the Ike Gauntlet.
The Ike Gauntlet Max is a timed run up one of America's steepest highways from 9,000 feet above sea level to the top of the mountain at entrance to the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado.

    The altitude seems to be the largest impact. I have a 7000 Pound trailer I tow with the Summit EcoDiesel and it has no issues with any of the climbs at 7% in the Virginias. I also have a weight distribution and sway control system though so I don't get that same push around feel they spoke of.

    I think the real test you need to do is do a side by side with the Hemi and Ecodiesel showing regular mpg and towing mpg. That would be really telling to those who are trying to do the breakeven for the $2k extra that the diesel costs over the Hemi. I've got an Ecodiesel and get 30+ mpg on the highway and my last big tow was an enclosed 6k lb trailer through the mountains in Pennsylvania and got 16.4 mpg and I was going 70+ mph the whole way (but found that using sport mode with Eco off, and then driving faster and using the shift to keep the RPM right around 2k where it's really happy so I was able to pull up most hills in 7th gear which also down transmission temps. There's a trick to do this.

    I have a 2017 Cherokee Overland with the 5.7. Towed a 20x8 enclosed trailer when we moved 400 miles. Empty trailer weight is 3400 lbs, I'm guessing it was 5500 lbs loaded. Jeeped with the 5.7, 8 speed trans, and air suspension towed it like a champ! Was super impressed. The only issue was trailer wag at times but a short wheel base vehicle compared to a truck wasn't unexpected.

    I get the impression that people often confuse the power curves of diesels and gas engines. They operate completely differently. Gas engines make significantly more HP as the RPMs go up until you hit the peak HP speed. This is because the rev's are increasing faster than the torque is dropping. So downshifting when the engine is loaded down in a gas engine will give you more revs, and thus HP to pull. Diesel's are a completely different animal. Diesels are pulling as hard as they are going to pull down around 2000-2750 RPM (in the case of the Jeep). The peak HP is only up at around 4000 RPM, but in fact it's making almost the same HP from 3000 to 4000 RPM - this means that the torque is dropping at almost the same rate as the RPM are increasing. Past 4000 RPM both the HP and the torque are dropping. So if the transmission is shifted down at 2750 RPM, you'll barely gain any HP, but you'll lose a lot of torque. Diesels are intended to be slow rev'ing engines, but will pull hard almost from the get-go, like when leaving a stop light. Gas engines are fast spinning engines that need to get on-cam before they can do much work. The big benefit for diesels is pulling at low rev's, and the fuel costs as long as you don't exceed their limits. That's why the overwhelming majority of long-haul trucks are diesels. In this area the Jeep diesel did shine.

    This thing should have pulled that boat up the hill no problem. Obviously the biggest hindrance was its transmission programming. That eighth gear is very high (0.67:1). None of the other vehicles that have attempted this have stayed in the highest gear for most of the way up (sport mode would have offered a much different result). The oil temp started to climb because of poor circulation. I'm no jeep enthusiast but I do recognize the benefits of small diesels in light trucks/SUVs. I've seen a lot of comments saying the GC is much lighter than the Ram 1500. It is slightly lighter 5400 vs 6000. The gear ratios offered in the Ram truck are reflective of that and it should have similar performance to the GC. Don't let this video jade your view of small diesel performance or unibody design SUVs. I drive a Touareg TDi and would be hard pressed to find a better tow vehicle.

    One thing I will say is that it isn't because the Jeep has a unibody vs an actual frame that you feel a difference between a pick up and the Jeep... its the length of the wheelbase. The longer the truck the better it will tow. Jeep wrangler (older ones) were power wise fine for 4-5k pounds but the wheelbase was so short that it made it hard to control while stoping quickly.

    For an update, I bought my GC EcoDiesel in 2015 and have had many trips to the Ouachita mountains with my Sanger ski boat in tow weighing in at 4500 pounds. If you shift it with the paddles and keep it from lugging like most diesel owners know hot to, the hottest I have seen it get is 220F in the middle of the summer and the trans temps never go over 200F. The towing is still great and it out tows my 2004 hemi by leaps. Satisfied completely with it. The DeF system is another story.

    This video is an excellent demonstration of how torque is the most misrepresented term in automotive marketing. This engine has more torque than the Tundra 5.7, the Ram Hemi 5.7 or the Titan 5.6 for just a few examples. This engine is completely pulverized by those same engines in much heavier setup. Don't get me wrong. The Dodge ecodiesel is a fantastically economical engine. It just doesn't have the same power curve. Don't get fooled by the torque marketing. They just love to take your money.

  • @janet53589
    @janet535895 жыл бұрын

    They were wrong. It's got nothing to do with the frame of a truck. If anything the frame will flex and cause stability problems, whereas the unibody will not, it is stiff. The real issue is the wheelbase and the rear overhang of the Jeep. You may want a sway control and load distribution mechanisms adding. That should help quite a bit.

    Some issues with the test. Peak power is at 4000 RPM. The transmission is programmed for economy, hence the great economy on the uphill. 15 MPG versus some of your other test trucks are getting 6 MPG? Of course the 6MPG trucks will climb the hill faster, they are using three times as much energy. You must manually downshift for towing and keep the RPM at ~4000. There are flappy paddles for a reason. The car doesn't know you are towing almost 6,000 pounds. Keep the rev's at 4,000, it would have easily maintained 65+ MPH and would still have gotten 10+ MPG. The temperature rose so much because the car was seriously lugging. For extreme towing you want max HP, not Torque. HP is WORK done over a period of TIME.

  • @duanerussell2053

    @duanerussell2053

    The temp rose due to the engineers at Jeep. I had the same heat buildup, and contacted Jeep. They said that is normal, and it will stay high, but not go into the red zone unless there are other problems. I towed in cold weather, and in heat, and the temp went almost to redline in both cases. But, it didn't overheat in the hot weather.

    Vitali Tchikichev TQ and HP are interrelated. HP = Torque x RPM ÷ 5252. TQ is what get's objects with a lot of mass moving. Once moving, say as in this test trying to get up a mountain, you want the engine to be at it's most horsepower. POWER is the measure of how much WORK can be done in a specified TIME. A good pictorial is this diesel engine: afepower.com/catalog/54-30392/graphs/54-30392Dyno%201600.jpg Peak TQ is at ~2,000 RPM. Peak Horsepower is at ~2,700 RPM. For starting an object with a lot of mass moving, you want to be at ~2,000 RPM. Once the object is moving and you start to climb a hill, you want to be at ~2,700 RPM. Ever heard a semi go up a steep mountain grade? It's RPM's are high (for a diesel) at it's most HP, not low lugging around at low RPM's at it's most TQ.

    What I was very disappointed to not have pointed out, and I think it is very important, is that the GC does not hold back the load going downhill. I downshift into 3rd at the top of the tunnel when towing my 3,500 lb camper. The programming upshifts on its own, so I don't have my speed restrained. I have to use my brakes often, even when I keep slowing down and downshifting. To me, this is a major issue with the diesel. As they showed in the video, the brakes got hot with all the braking they had to do. Jeep needs to address this! Also, if they didn't use Sport mode when going up the hill, that's their bad choice. Don't bad-mouth the shifting when you are using it in Eco mode. I could not tell, though, if they said they had it in Eco mode, or "normal" mode. Even normal mode, though, is not what you should be climbing to the tunnel with. Use the tools available, instead of complaining that a hammer won't cut the board efficiently.

    I understand the test was to see what the limit looks like. I wouldn't lose sight of the fact that there are very few mid size suvs that can perform this same tow. The other suvs certainly can't disconnect the boat and get over 30 mpg on the highway. Also, anyone see the irony in passing the camper that can barely haul its own weight up the mountain?

    for all that shit they talked about it, 15.3 mpg going up that hill with a maxed out payload is pretty damn impressive for ANY vehicle. i bet that raptor got around 8 with nothing behind it...

    How does the turbo diesel do without anything in tow? I am trying to decide between the hemi and the diesel. I drive 70 through Colorado all the time with my wrangler, but find it doesn't have enough power over the passes for me.

    +Rob Ford it's fun to dirive. I've driven ours through Colorado twice and it handles mountain roads effortlessly. Great road trip vehicle. My Wrangler doesn't do so well up steep inclines (large tires and under-powered engine).

    So the lesson here is that if you have to cross the Rockies in your diesel Grand Cherokee you need to buy a smaller boat. Your typical 3,000 lb bass boat would be an easy tow with this vehicle.

    USCisgay Yes, peak numbers are similar, but if you looked at the factory dyno graphs of the two then you will see why your old PS 7.3L out towed this engine. The Ecodiesel 3.0L was originally developed to go into Cadillac cars as a fuel efficient engine alternative to the gas engine until the plan was scrubbed by GM. As a diesel meant for a car, the power delivery is rather peaky loosing a lot of torque after it hits it's 2,000rpm peak and it really takes a nose dive after 3,000 rpm. By the time the Ecodiesel gets it's peak horsepower it has lost almost 20% of it's peak torque making the power band very narrow. In contrast, the made for towing PS 7.3L has a flatter torque curve retaining most of its torque throughout it's rev range. It only looses less than 3% of it's torque by the time it hits peak horsepower which means you have access to a lot of torque for a much broader rpm range. So you see, it is not just about what the engine does at peak power, but also what it does at the rest of the rpm range that really matters.

    Just to clarify the fuel economy is great. We use my truck to tow so this doesn't have a trailer hooked up. The oil changes require special Euro oil that a lot of the imports have been using. Each oil change is over $160.00 and maintenance in general is HIGH COST. If your looking at buying this rig make sure you have extra cash for anything it needs.

    C Nevs I have to disagree. I have one, and have had it for 7 months. I have 28,000 miles on it. I purchased the oil change package from the dealer, and changes are only $110. Since they are only done every 10,000 miles, they are much the same as a gasser at 3,500 miles. With the miles I drive, the fuel savings will pay for the engine in another 50,000 miles, max. My wife's 5.7 Hemi can't tow anywhere close to my diesel. For my needs, diesel is the way to go, and saves me money.

    Duane Russell I can see that and respect that for sure. I would have to agree with you. When looking at the its not too bad. I have a duramax diesel and love it. I go 5000 and pay 90.00 so yes the fuel savings for us has been pretty darn good. I have seen a lot of recalls (relatively) on it though so i am a little gun shy.
