2016-2019 Honda Pilot OEM Trailer Hitch Install and Wiring Harness

This video shows you how to install the factory OEM accessory trailer hitch to a 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 Honda Pilot. This particular car is a 2018 Honda Pilot AWD base model. I show you all the steps it takes to be able to completely put the trailer hitch on your vehicle. I have also made a separate video for the trailer hitch wiring.

Thank you for the videos! They worked great! I reviewed them a few times and installed the wiring harness then the hitch today. It went smoothly and I ran into rust in the hitch bolt holes as well here in Maryland. Thanks for making the time to share this. You saved me hundreds $$$ of not having to pay someone to do it and I learned there are still some things we can do to work on cars these days!! Thanks again!!

Thanks so much for this set of videos! The only thing that tripped me up a little bit was that mine is a Touring model with a rear 12V outlet and I needed to remember to unhook that to remove the panel. Also - it's easy to bend the contacts on the outlet as you're moving the panel around, so be careful.

I put on the factory hitch on my 2022 Honda Pilot. I used a wire brush on the bolt holes similar to the that used with a battery brush. I blew out the bolt hole with compressed air then used the proper metric tap with WD40 to chase out the rest of the rust in the threads. I used a ratcheting box wrench to turn the tap which worked great.

Of the 2hrs it took for the installation, 1:45 of that was getting those bolt holes cleaned!! LOL. I think I STILL smell like PBBlaster. Not only did I nuke the bolt holes with PBBlaster...I also grabbed some 1/2" wire 'tube brushes', attached it to my drill and was able to get the threads cleaned out pretty readily. Wish Honda could have spent the extra $0.15 and put some plastic plugs over those holes! :)

If you are putting a hitch on a Pilot that's several years old, buy a 14x1.5 thread tap to chase the threaded holes in the frame to clean the rust out. That is a fine pitch thread that, when combined with a bit of surface rust, is just begging to be cross-threaded.

You can buy a 14mm x 1.5mm pitch tap on Amazon for $12 and use that to chase (clean up) the threads. I have a 2018 pilot and live in Chicago so I had 3 years of rust on these threaded holes when I went to put the hitch on. After trying to clean the threads I was able to get all the bolts started, but no where near all the way in. Used the tap and viola - no problem with bolts. Hindsight - I should have purchased the tap to start with given the snow and salt where I live. www.amazon.com/dp/B07VX8DX7Q?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
