I wrote a letter to editor about Chris Patten in Financial Times.

It was a toss-up who nodded off first, Lord Trougher or the audience.

In mainland China, there are more and more people who pursue the democratic system. Honestly, I am glad to see that Hongkong people fight for their rights. Nevertheless, they should respect people from main land China. It seems to be unforgivable that several senators abuse Chinese in the parliament where it is China's sovereign region.

Many mainlanders have this complaint. It is a very strange complaint to Western ears. A government rules by the consent of the people. But Hong Kong didn't vote to be under the control of the Chinese Communist Party. Nor did the Mainland elect the CCP! The CCP controls China by force. In the West, we don't see that as legitimate any more than we recognize the divine right of kings.

doobeedoo2 I disagree with some of your opinion. Firstly, Chinese did not vote for ceding HongKong to Britain. Secondly, I do not believe that the CCP controls Chinese by force. It seems to be an excuse from cowards. It is clear that the CCP 'liberated' China by force 66 years ago. Nowadays, the CCP continue to govern China because of the promise on economic growth. As you mentioned 'legitimate', I want to ask you a question. Do you think Abraham violates the constitution due to American civil war? Thirdly, I did not select the CCP. However, I guess my grandparents chose the CCP. Although my generation tend to suffer because of this decision, I can see a great future for my kids. I consider that I do not have to tell you how westerners were suffering after first industry revolution.

Hongbin Yang thank you for your reply. I hope that you are correct about the CCP ruling because of the promise of economic growth. if so, it will allow other parties and other people with different opinions to come to power when economic growth fails. I don't think that will happen, though, because I view China as a kleptocracy. I also view my own country now as a kleptocracy. Kleptocracy is a worldwide phenomenon right now. income inequality is at an extreme in most countries. In China, Russia, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, it is impossible to change governments and economic policy.

doobeedoo2 Because the GDP is increasing, you may find the significant gap between people's income. Society such as the UK, or Japan, they seem to be more-developed countries which have the stable social structure. The income gap may be less significant in those countries.In China, the CCP aims increase the size of its middle-class and narrow the income gap. Based on their plan, they want to create 700 million people who belong to mid-class in 2020. I know there are many people who criticise Chinese government because of the income inequality. However, I think most of them forget China opened the market in 1978. In some views, China only has developed for 37 years. The government has already changed the planned economy into mix economy. Because of the growth of the economy, the society is still developing. Personally, I believe China is more likely to change than other less-developed countries. The main reason seems to be economic growth. When people do not have to make decision between bread or democracy, it may be the right time to pursue the real democracy.

Chris Patten did not say that Hong Kong politics has become part of the Beijing power struggle. To that extent, if H K has more autonomy Hong Kong may have some immunity from the Beijing politics.

When he was governor,he ruled with an iron fist and yet now he was encouraging more democracy in HK.What a hypocrite...

Why didn't the people of HK want to govern themselves and elect their own leader when under British rule? Just compare the Governors appointed by Britain and the Chief Executives endorsed by China. It is self-explanatory.

If one day, that the elites of China, like the beloved Mr. Bo Guagua (薄瓜瓜), all stay in China for their education and work, but the elites of Britain, like Prince George, comes to China to study and work, then HK people may not need democracy anymore.

GEESUS498 hongkong is not a Independence country owned by 7 million local people .hongkong is apart of china territory so the future of hongkong should decide and accept by whole 1.3 billion Chinese. i think this is best answer to you .

Fei Pang our dear Governor, we missed your charisma so much and grateful you still concern us HK people so much rip....: ( Our Government is now full of garbage/brainless shoeshiners and greedy property developers, I am a keen supporter of Trump, Brexit and Rodrigo Duterte, we need changes. How good was the old days when the British ruled with method and patterns, it's so chaotic now. (As you said b4 you leave, HK will be dying on the hand of HK ppl not China, remember that ?) I luv China and I think President Xi is doing well with leaping progress on anti-corruption crackdown and we need unselfish politician like you here. Miss you so much. Take care.
