Although many shoppers seem to think the Lexus NX was designed to compete with the BMW X1, Mercedes GLA or Audi Q3, it is in fact a solid X3 / XC60 / GLK / Q5 competitor. Where does that leave the Lexus RX? Excellent question. The RX is a half-step larger and slots between the Lincoln MKX and Cadillac SRX in size.
While Land Rover arguably invented the concept of a luxury SUV with their first Range Rover, the 1998 Lexus RX is the vehicle that's had the single biggest impact on the luxury industry. Initially derided by the press as a lifted Camry with delusions of grandeur, calling the RX a run away sales success would be an understatement. Lexus' original crossover now accounts for over a third of the brand's total volume in America and holds the crown as the best selling luxury vehicle on our shores. Trouble is, the RX has grown over time and is now a half-step too big for European tastes. In the hopes of dominating a third of Lexus brand sales in Europe, Lexus engineers went back to the drawing board and created s little brother for the RX: the 2015 Lexus NX.
The right-sized Lexus crossover is, as you'd expect, almost exactly the same size as the Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, BMW X3 and Acura RDX. That puts the NX slightly ahead of the Mercedes GLK, four inches ahead of the 2015 Lincoln MKC and a full foot longer than the Range Rover Evoque. With 6.9 inches of ground clearance the NX should be just as dirt-road capable as the average luxury soft-roader and interestingly Lexus bothers to publish approach and departure angles. In case you're now wondering, approach is 28.7 degrees in 200t and 300h trim and 16.8 deg in the F-Sport because of the flatter front end. Departure remains 24 degrees on all models.
Before you ask, the NX isn't a shrunken RX and it isn't a luxury RAV-4 either. Lexus claims that 90% of the parts are unique to the NX and those that are shared are primarily related to the optional hybrid system. Thanks to the clean sheet design, the NX is the first Lexus that looks comfortable in the new corporate uniform.While other Lexus models (namely the LS) wear the "spindle" grille surprisingly well, other aspects of the new design language haven't translated well to the luxury brand's utility vehicles. The "Nike swoosh" LED daytime running lamp modules that look oddly out-of-place on the IS sedan actually work on the NX and I found myself wondering why. I think the answer can be found in the headlamp module which is much sleeker than in other Lexus models thanks to standard LED low beams. Overall the combination allows for a more balanced front end.
From tip to tail there's no doubt that the NX's design won't be for everyone, but I find that refreshing for a brand long known for design-restraint. I wouldn't exactly call it the looks ground breaking or polarizing, but this is as close as Lexus has even been. Although Lexus is making an NX F-Sport Hybrid, Lexus has chosen to not offer the aggressive grille and fuel-sipping engine combo in America.Under the hood beats the first turbo engine Lexus has sold in America: an all-new 2.0L direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder engine. While the engineers spent most of their time telling members of the press how fantastic their turbo design is, I was more intrigued that this seems to be the first non-hybrid drivetrain that can switch between an Otto and an Atkinson cycle. (Mazda tells me they do not consider the SkyAcitv design an Atkinson cycle.) The technology behind this is a new variable valve timing system that can adjust the intake and exhaust cam timing independently allowing for a late intake valve closure when efficiency rather than torque is required. Also on the trivia list is an air-to-water intercooler instead of a more typical air-to-air unit. The result is 235 horsepower from 4,800-5,600 RPM and 258 lb-ft from 1,650-4,000 RPM.
Rather than borrowing the 8-speed automatic used in the RX350 F-Sport (and the XC60), Lexus chose to refresh an existing 6-speed auto and tweak it for the turbo engine's low-end torque. The engineer I spoke with claimed that the rationale behind the missing gears was that "an 8-speed automatic isn't as much fun with paddle shifters." Make of that what you will.

    Is the ride extremely plush? I don't want any sportyness only silky smooth ride. Ive heard the RX offers a great ride but the NX looks better. Just wondering before I test drive.

    Jason Rothfeld we had the 2015 RX350 for 2.5 years and we test drove the NX200t. The RX350 has a slightly softer ride, but I can say the NX was smoother than the X3 for example. I would recommend the NX for sure.

  • @AAutoBuyersGuide

    Eddy JImenez The Outback yes, the Outback 3.6, not really. The 3.6L engine isn't as refined as the competition's V6 engines and although the center of gravity is low, the weight distribution in the H6 model is heavily skewed toward the front. Fuel economy is fairly lacklustre as well. The Outback doesn't have any natural competition however since it is the only AWD wagon like that on sale in the USA. The Volvo XC70 and Audi allroad are much more expensive and anything else would be more SUV like. Personally I'd save the cash and get the Outback 2.5, but if your really want the extra power that 3.6 is your only option, just expect to pay more at the pump and more in long term maintenance.

    There is no "B" (engine braking) drive mode on the transmission in the hybrid version? Or were you showing the shift column from the 200t?

  • @AAutoBuyersGuide

    @AAutoBuyersGuide

    9 жыл бұрын

    That is correct, there is no "B" mode. Instead Lexus gives you Sport mode and the manual ratio selection. The manual mode isn't really manual of course but it tries to imitate 7 (or was it 6?) ratios so you can select your own engine braking.

    Sharat Chandra That was the combined figure with city and highway driving. If you're gentle and keep it to the speed limit the EPA highway rating is possible on level roadways. If/when gas returns to $5/gallon, the hybrid will make a great deal of sense.

    Out of all the SUV models. Which brand you like most if you are in the market for a compact SUV? My wife has a 2007 RX 330, she has over 100k miles, no major repairs other than the rear hatch power shock needed to be replace and regular maintenance. I have had German made SUV, it felt like a rock solid build. But once it passed over 100k miles, it seems there are many part need to be replaced. Costly maintenance. Now I have a CayenneS that I drive in my spare time, even my German mechanic told me, this car is good for under 100k miles, he told me the cayenne is quite complicated. • @AAutoBuyersGuide

    The best answer is "it depends". It is possible to have an LED headlamps that is dimmer or brighter than an HID headlamp, it really just depends on how the manufacturer designed the lamp module. LEDs consume less power, don't need to warm up as long and allow headlamp designs not possible with HID lamps. As far as your LED fogs go, most modern fog lamps aren't really helpful in fog, they are mainly for looks.

    Note all NX come with LED low beam headlights (not that clear in their specs). The triple LED upgrade is for high beam and looks. Fog lights in many areas in US aren't really needed or required. But there are few areas where visibility can go below 150 feet and in that case definitely helpful (I've had my experience with that but pretty rare in most areas).

    It does, but you move the front and the rear portions of the seat independently. So there is no switch to raise the whole seat up evenly, you could raise the front, then raise the rear. Volvo and Lincoln are "near-luxury" brands, but in the industry the NX, X3, Q5 and GLK are alco considered "near luxury" segment products so the comparison is apt. Lexus, BMW, Mercedes and Audi consider the Volvo a "primary competitor" while they don't mention Lincoln in cross-shop data. Without a doubt Lincoln and Volvo lack vehicles that compete in the luxury segment (7-Series, S-Class)

    Alex on Autos I really appreciate that you responded to my comment. Many thanks! I meant when I, as a customer, buy a car, i will consider some value for the brand such as BMW, Lexus, etc. Lincoln and Volvo lack that brand value. People don't consider them as Luxury brands.

    Nima Bahrehdar Lincoln certainly, Volvo is in this odd place in the middle. If you drove up to the Country Club in your Lincoln, people would assume your investments tanked. If you drove up in a Volvo they would assume that you're a little boring and practical and wear cardigans.

    One weird thing I found is that you cannot fit tire chains on the factory 18" wheels which are in the premium package. That in turn is required if you want blind spot monitoring (so pretty popular package). Tire chains are required in most mountain passes in CA so bit weird they didn't think about that. Workaround would be to purchase different size tires but that cost you bit more. One other thing to note is that the Q5 hybrid is fully loaded so difference is not quite 10K. More like 3K but Q5 hybrid city fuel economy is not good so really no comparison.

    It is a little odd, but with production in Japan Lexus likes to keep variations low so they don't have an overstock of odd selling models here. In CA and a few other states you rarely end up with AWD *and* chains required because the state prefers to close the road if they think it passes beyond the AWD *or* chains level. Now that said while they will let you through with a NX 300h AWD or a RX 450h AWD, the fact that only about 70HP are going to the rear wheels makes it a little "unusual" in the snow.

    Alex on Autos Actually in WA state it's sold with same configuration. I think AWD setup should be alright to get traction in the snow. How does this compare to the A3 AWD which doesn't have the full Quattro? I assume bit better than this since more power?

  • @AAutoBuyersGuide

    @AAutoBuyersGuide

    9 жыл бұрын

    Lucien E Almost every other AWD system *can* send almost all the power to either axle and would therefore be superior to the Lexus e-AWD system. Viscous clutch systems (which have fallen out of favour now) in general can nearly spilt the power assuming no wheel slip and if the primary axle has zero traction somewhere between 50% and 90% of the power can go to the secondary axle depending on design. Most modern FWD or RWD based systems use a multi-plate clutch setup, this includes the FWD based Audis, almost all BMWs, Mercedes, Volvo, 2015 Subaru, Toyota, Honda, etc vehicles (but excludes most pickup trucks). These systems power the primary axle and can usually fully lock a clutch pack to shift power to the secondary axle. When locked power split is 50/50 and if the primary looses traction then you can get essentially 100% of the power to the secondary axle. Audi and a few others use a Torsen center differential for a fixed power split, in these the power to the secondary is fixed at say 40% but can vary up to the limits in the Torsen design, say 90%. Assuming the Torsen is not a limited slip unit (most are not) the disadvantage is that if one axle has 100% slip, the Torsen will not shift power to the other axle without the intervention of the traction control system. Without a limited slip some power would be consumed by the traction control system in the way of friction so the maximum balance is often 10/90 or 90/10. More rugged systems found on pickup trucks and similar vehicles typically use a simpler clutch pack or a toothed clutch to engage or disengage the secondary axle. This setup does not allow the secondary to spin at a different rate than the primary so this is why you sometimes feel "binding" when turning and most systems say they should not be engaged on high friction surfaces like pavement. This type is robust and can send 100% of the power to either axle, maintains stability in many off-road type situations (especially when combined with front and rear axle locks) but engagement in "auto" modes can be abrupt and on-road performance in the snow frequently lags behind some of the other systems. So circling back around, the A3 and NX 200t use basically the same system. They can send essentially 100% of the power to the rear axle is the front has zero slip, so in the 200t this is about 240HP. Assuming no slip it is 50/50 so about 120HP to the rear in the 200t. The 300h can only do a maximum of 70HP to the rear and since the gearing is fixed it doesn't give you as much low end power to the rear as the others. The 200t in most situations will send nearly twice the power to the rear. Same goes for the Q3.

    I am surprised you are so enamored with the Lincoln MKC. Consumer Reports rated it the worst vehicle to buy in its class, in part because of its lethargic handling and substandard fuel consumption. Regarding the NX, I wish Lexus had added the spindle grill of the F-sport to all models. It looks gorgeous and upgrades the aesthetics to the same level as European brands. However, the standard horizontal grill seems to have been removed from a 90s car.

    +HIV Aladeen No offense taken, this is the Internet. :) Nah, my brand loyalty is extremely limited. Cars are tools, that's all. I owned a Kia before, was happy, have a Huyndai now (besides my Camry), am less happy. Kia had a stick, good suspension, and was very comfortable. Mechanically it had minor issues but nothing to lose sleep over. Huyndai appears a bit more solid mechanically, but suspension is atrocious, stick only came with base trim which over time is proving difficult to live with (terrible driver's seat), and the overall interior seems cheaper than that old Kia. Oh well, lesson for the future to be less forgiving when evaluating a purchase.
