Transmission fluid and coolant cross-contaminated with each other inside the cooler. This resulted in the tranny malfunctioning on a short return trip. The solution is to replace the cooler. In addition, the fluids must be flushed out somehow and replaced with fresh fluid.
Feeling certain no permanent damage was done and rather than shelling out big bucks for a shop to tell me I need a new tranny, I decided to replace the cooler, do several drain and fills, and see how that goes.
This cooler is not near the radiator, rather it is bolted to the top of the tranny.

There are actually 2 transmission coolers. The one you are replacing is called the auxiliary cooler, the trans cooler is up front in front of the radiator and it cools the tranny fluid via air flow. I hit a deer and the grille made a small pin hole in the front trans cooler and started squirting fluid out. $80 from the dealer new, Not bad! The front end cooler might only be on the newer escapes, I have a 2019

Can you reverse flush the transmission and filter (internal non serviceable) through that cooler? Thanks. I think my filter is plugging up. Whining noise and slipping
Your right not much on the net about this issue. Do you happen to have a part number for the cooler? Is it dealer only or available on line. I've tried ebay with no luck.

OUNCE WATER MIX'S WITH TRANSMISSION FLUID, IT BECOMES A TICKING TIME BOMB. GOOD LUCK. I'VE SEEN SOME GO FOR YEARS BUT OUNCE TORN APART THE SIGNS OF WATER INTRUSION IS ALWAYS THERE.

Get the cooler from oempartsource.com. You will get butt f**ked buying it at the stealership
