2015 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel - Redline: Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It's been quite some time since we saw an American-built diesel passenger car, Chevrolet takes its best-selling Cruze compact car and gives it one of the torquiest engines in the class. Will it be enough to mask the car's stodgy rental car image?

I have a 2015 Cruze Diesel. I love my car. I test drove the other bench marks mentioned in this review. The reviewer needs to find a different line of work. I am very picky about my cars and for the money one would be hard to find a better value. As far as his thoughts on the Cobalt. I had a 99 G-5 which is the twin to the Cobalt again it was a very dependable car I sold it at 80k and the car never had any problems and was well built. I average 46MPG and on one trip averaged over 64 MPG.

"Now the Cruze Diesel isn't available with push-button start." OMG! You mean to tell me that you actually have to reach into your pocket, pull the key out, put it in the ignition, and turn it in order to start the engine? That's *WAY* too labor intensive! Seriously though, this generation is so full of freaking lazy people who always have to bitch about anything that requires a few seconds of effort to accomplish a simple ass task. Next, you'll be wanting everything to be automatic and even telepathic!

Keith Thanks Keith, I try to be as fair as I can and keep to mind what kind of market the car targets. Some viewers just don't always want to hear the "ugly" part of the vehicle, especially if that's what he/she drives. However, I believe that no car is truly perfect, although there are some that come pretty darn close ;). -Sofyan

The Cruze was always the epitome of a cheap GM car from what I can tell. The suspension needs to be independent, the interior isn't up to par in any way, and the performance is underwhelming. Not a single Cruze I have driven has changed my mind. The Volkswagen, Mazda, Honda and Ford are all better choices at this point.

Hi Sofyan! I just want to say that I've been a huge fan of this channel and even your old one with your car reviews on there. I've been a bit of a silent fan, never commenting, but I just wanted to know one thing. I feel like the videos you make have improved greatly in quality compared to your old videos and I must applaud you for this, but, will you ever go back to making reviews of older cars as you had before? It seems like all you have been reviewing lately are just brand new cars (with the exception of your review of the classic Acura NSX and the Legend) and I wonder if you will ever review any more special vehicles like those anymore from the past. Thanks! Huge fan, keep up the excellent videos!

adis handanovic Thanks for being a fan for so long! I do realize that lately, I've been choosing to film more new cars especially since I've gotten access to manufacture press cars. I will still choose to film older vehicles occasionally, but I am very selective when it comes to the condition. I prefer to show you guys clean, unmodified used cars and they can be hard to find. That being sad, I won't ever stop filming older vehicles, I'm just waiting to find a really good one that I know you all want to see :). -Sofyan

Most people don't buy heavy diesel cars to drive as a sports car and they don't care about 0-60mph or mostly city driving they drive them for long run and fuel mileage. And Volkswagen might be cheaper up front but cost a lot more for maintenance, I know because I have owned one got rid of it and want something cheaper to keep up, while keeping the fuel mileage. Not to mention my Volkswagen Passat TDI that I owned would not get but around 32-38mpg no matter if I was in the city or on the the highway far from what they said it would get. I know some people that got better mileage with theirs but everyone said they would not get the mileage that volkswagen advertised. So I do thank you for some of your comments but some of the things you say is a negative to me is a possitive. Just like the steering I don't like the steering to be too responsive the car I own now drives like a sports car in town but you get on the interstate at speeds around 65-70 miles per hour then the slightest little movement and the car will jerk from lane to lane. City driving it is fantastic but not on the highway and I think the way you are describing this car it is the best of both worlds. I would love to have one a little less responsive just because of highway speeds it just feels unsafe to me. Again thanks for your thoughts just wish it was more reviews like people would be using it for and not compairing a highway car to a sports car.

My wife has a diesel Cruze and I generally agree with most of your criticisms. But the main appeal of this car is the fuel economy and resale value. Diesel's hold their value really well and this car is the best highway MPG non-hybrid/electric car we've ever driven. Going normal highway speed we got 46-48 mpg. If you go a bit slower (55-60 MPH) we'll get about 50-52 mpg. My wife loves it, it's her favorite car she's owned, even compared to a Jetta TDI she's owned. We love our Cruze Diesel!

( continuing ) I don't mind the interior but I do find the driver cup holders in kind of an odd place & hard to get to. I did notice the seats are very hard compared to my G6 GT. I had a G5 GTprior to the 6 & find the car comparable but prefer the Cruze much more. I had a Grand Am GT at one time too as well as a Nissan 300 ZX so I do like driving fast. I'm older now & this car suits me just fine for what I need. It has passing power and I find the fuel economy great. I drove the car a lot & took a road trip on the 3rd day. After 510 miles I still had about a 1/4 tank of gas left from when I got the car from the dealer.

I don't see why there is so much hate on the cruze. My girl has one and the interior is pretty solid with no rattles and has been very reliable. Plus I believe its the only one in its class that offers a gas turbocharged engine, its very torquey for everyday driving. We took a 600+ mile trip to florida in it fully loaded, going 70-80mph all the way and averaged 42mpg! The trifecta team also has an engine tune that gives the 1.4l gas turbo +44 WHP and +51 ft-lbs of torque UNDER THE CURVE They also have a tune for the diesel 2.0 model +66 ft-lbs@2850RPM and +51 WHP@4300RPM You can't get these gains with a tune with any of the competition

I love this generation cruze... speaking from the future again because I'm binge watching older cars because the car market is completely over run by big grocery mommy getter and the cool cars and small cars are gone right now. But regardless, contrary to popular opinion, I found this generation Cruze to be quite stylish. It was a cute little car. The next generation was nice as well but this one, while bland to some, was perfect for me. I almost bought one until what I do requires me to have my ideal car, midsize and full size sedans. I miss this era and I wished we appreciated it a lot more. Cars weren't so expensive. Feels like today we have completly missed what a car's purpose is for regardless of it being compact, luxury, electric, etc. It's to get you from point A to B. And this coming from a 21 year old.

The diesels versions of maserati models are from VM. And the VCDI put on the corean cruze looks a little different but it's a little pearl, and is the best seller engine of VM around the world.

The Cruze Diesel's main competitor in terms of price and trim is the VW Jetta TDI. While the Cruze Diesel is nice, VW matches its 46 MPG highway rating, though VW has a track record when it comes to reliability and quality, and you can get a Jetta S TDI and get nice features at a lower price (the Cruze Diesel doesn't offer a lower-priced model like the Jetta TDI does)... right now, I'd pick a 2015 VW Jetta TDI over the Cruze Diesel.

  • @IKhanNot

fanowner12 VWs aren't reliable though the TDI motor is solid. It's far more refined than this Cruze so I'd go for the Jetta/Golf too. I'd probably buy a 1 or 2 year old model because VW tosses in the CPO warranty with an extra 2year/40,000km warranty so in some cases you get a better warranty than just the basic 4 year/80,000 km.

I figured with all that extra torque it could outdo my sonic 0-60 stock of course but stock it's almost a second behind the sonic still. I figured it would've been along the lines of driving a sonic with massive exhaust upgrades and an intake. Thanks for the review I'll wait till they redesign the vehicle but they probably won't like they did with the J body cavalier, they ran the same body for over a decade before they discontinued the car

I'm also disappointed in the low number of diesel Cruzes available but it doesn't line up well with other Chevys. Why buy a $26k Cruze diesel (local prices with rebates) when you can buy a gas Cruze for under $17k or a Malibu for $20k?

I own a 2014 Cruze Diesel (very minor non driving related differences from 2015) and while it is not a perfect car, I disagree with many aspects of this review. Those who (probably blindly) say in comments that the Cruze is a POS compared to a VW are really drinking some brand specific Kool Aid. I seriously considered the VW TDIs when it was time to buy this car and I previously owned a 2004 Jetta TDI for 100K reasonably low trouble miles. There was no aspect of the Sportwagens that I looked at and test drove several times that was obviously or dramatically better to me than the Cruze. For what it is worth, my biggest concern with the car is the complicated emissions system which has resulted in 3 dealer visits in 20K miles. Something the 2014 VW didn't have to worry about but now they too have urea injection etc so time will tell if it impacts their reliability. I test drove a Jetta Sportwagen (again this was 2014) and felt that the DSG was actually even softer/slower off the line than the Cruze. As he mentioned, the diesel Cruze has a different 6 speed than the gas models and I have found it to be quite responsive and pleasing. I also find the manual shifting to work well (not denying shifts) but it already does a really good job of downshifting on downhills to give engine braking so I rarely play with manual shifting unlike in my other car where I use it often here in hilly PA. My favorite things about the Diesel Cruze are the power, the transmission (really, other than 0-5 MPH which is as much turbo lag as anything, I think it's brilliant), going 6 or 700 miles on each tank of fuel and the quiet composed ride. In 2014 at least, automatic headlights weren't available at any price on the Jetta Sportwagen. I feel very secure with the Watts link or Z-link rear suspension serving as a nice suspension upgrade over Corolla or lower trim Cruzes. It handles fine but he's right it's not remotely Mazda 3 territory. Less than favorite things are My Link (slow, sometimes reboots itself), the tight rear seat room and the already mentioned complex emissions controls that seem to at least have had some 2014 teething pains.

The resale on this rattling and plastic-y would by horrible. With so little thought into the parts and design, I would believe that it isn't going to be a decent car.

clovis myers No, it will be more reliable. This engine is from Opel. They use this engine in Europe and customer satisfaction is dreadful just because theres so many long term issues. The TDI, if you get a good one, will last 1 million miles. Theres lots of examples on youtube. And the interior is trash in the cruze. Ever seen the build quality? The panel gaps? Those cheap plastics? And that awful scratchy cloth? No, the Jetta is miles better in every way. Especially with the facelift model.

Brandon Friesen this is most definitely not a engine from OPEL, this is from fiat which is worse actually ;) if you think VW has "GOOD BUILD QUALITY" you are sorely mistaken, as a detailer we do more than enough VW's most of them are more inline with kia's and Chrysler. oh and this model that he is reviewing is not the top of the line model it has the top of the line engine.

clovis myers It is an engine from Opel, read this article: www.kbb.com/car-news/all-the-latest/2014-chevrolet-cruze-diesel-first-review-a-chevy-with-a-german-accent/2000009389/ Still don't believe me? I have tons more evidence from MotorTrend, Car and Driver, and Consumer Reports. Also, the Jetta does have good build quality, best in class next to the Golf. Need a quick way to test it? For the exterior, knock on a part of the car that is metal, for example the wheelarches. On a Cruze, Mazda3, Elantra etc, they use thin metal so it will sound incredibly hollow. Knock on a Jettas wheel arch, and it will sound very thick and will just make a thud. This is because VW uses special galvanized steel that increases crash safety and rust prevention. Now for the interior, slam one of the doors. For any Japanese or American car,the door slam will sound hollow and tinny. For a German car, like the Jetta, it will sound solid and substantial. I work for Mazda and see Cruze's get traded in all day long and am very disapointed with them. The model this guy is reviewing is a top of the line model, hence why he said "LTZ" which is top of the line. And he said in the video, for a similarly equipped Jetta TDI, it's still over $1,500 cheaper.

Brandon Friesen Modern diesels actually have pretty poor reliability and longevity. Too much complexity and emissions stuff kills them. Also, Most turbocharged 2.0L gas engines produce an equal amount low-end torque, so that also isn't a point for diesels. As for fuel economy, yes, but there's no point to better fuel economy when diesel costs so much more upfront, the fuel is more, the repairs are more, etc. Even under the best circumstances, diesel will take you a very long time to pay for itself. I'm saying this from experience.

  • @lejink

    @lejink

Caesar Diesel cars do cost more upfront, but they sell for more used too so you get the money back. Diesel fuel is even with gas atm, so fuel prices aren't an issue. Maintenance price is higher for sure... Definitely not worth keeping a modern diesel for a long time

I seriously don't understand why people buy GM products, especially from the Chevrolet brand. The Cruze=bottom of the class. The Equinox=bottom of the class. The Malibu=bottom of the class. They strive at making cheap, chintzy, poorly designed cars, designed specifically with mass consumption in mind. GM doesn't care about the consumer, they only put out whatever will make them the most money in the end..which usually equates to a car that has an accelerator, brake, and steering wheel...and everything else is just a cheap afterthought. It really is mind-boggling that somebody would choose a Cruze or an Equinox over say a Focus or an Escape. Toyota, for example, may be considered a "bland" car manufacturer, but at least they have comfort, reliability, nice quality interiors, up-to-date technology, etc..Chevy has virtually nothing to offer to the consumer. No comfort, no reliability, no unique/appealing driving dynamics, no tech, no eye-catching styling, etc..there is nothing special about any of their cars. Sorry, I just HATE GM and I just can't understand why people buy into these cheap and overtly shitty cars. The second you get in one you can immediately tell it's designed to be a shitty rental car.

You are very correct! I live in the Detroit area where GMs are extremely popular (mostly because everbody has a family member that works for GM) and people get offended when you tell the truth about GM! Recently, ford-lincoln and fiat-chrysler have made strides in ridding the world of the stereotype of American cars being crap. But GM just keeps running it! When you go to Europe your rental is a quality skoda octavia or Volkswagen golf, but in america you are welcomed here (or should I say, unwelcomed) with an embarrassing cruze! Look closely at most GM cars in states other than Michigan, they all have rental company barcode stickers on them. They are truly terrible cars at the bottom of the class! The only reason people buy them is because of their GM-employed family members. They do not research the cars because if they did they would see the terrible reviews from all automotive journalists. I hate GM they do not give a crap about safety or technology either and even threaten the lives of Americans with dangerous vehicles! I wish that they had stayed bankrupt in 2009! The American car industry would have done even better with a new "big three"- chrysler, ford, and tesla. GM always steals the thunder although their cars are mediocre! I hope to rejoice the day that GM dies along with all their unreliable cars.
