The BMW we really wanted to take along for our epic sport tour to Yosemite back in July was the company’s new R1200RT, but a batch of faulty rear shock shafts on the ESA models put the kibosh on that, so we wound up taking the K1600GT instead.
Those problems have been addressed so we pit the R1200RT against the Moto Guzzi Norge GT 8V and Yamaha's FJR1300ES.

    I’m not surprised one bit that the discussion started with BMW fixing the rear suspension problem. With BMW, there’s always a problem. An expensive problem. I thought after 42 years behind bars I deserved the best, so I bought myself a BMW . it was my very first BMW ,a K bike.. I won’t go into every thing that was wrong/flawed, but I’ll give you a couple little examples. Because of the ABS system which is partially electronic controlled by a computer, the brake fluid has to be changed often. I called the dealer which I never do, I do all my own work being an ex motorcycle mechanic at four different dealerships over the years, but with a BMW, you have to check.. I am not kidding, a simple on every other bike brake fluid change at the BMW dealer, if I made an appointment, they would be able to do it in seven weeks, $750 labor, plus shop materials, plus disposal fee, plus tax.. The air filter was $92 at the dealer, the oil filter was $27. One other example of BMW costs of ownership. An acquaintance of mine is a mechanic at the local BMW shop. I know them to talk to you but I don’t know him to have a beer with. call talking with him at the dealership, he had a BMW K 1200 LT on the lift, he had the rear wheel off, the rear swingarm, the transmission removed, the whole back of the bike was removed. I asked him what went wrong with his bike. he said the owner apparently didn’t change the break/clutch fluid in the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder mechanism, much like changing the brake fluid in any normal motorcycle disc brake caliper. so the slave cylinder in that machine leaked, it leaked onto the clutch, the clutch was slipping , and the slave cylinder had to be replaced because the seal had failed.I asked him how much does a job like that cost.. he said over $5000. My mouth opened and my eyebrows went all the way up in shock. He said yeah I know, not only that, you need to have special tools to do this job. typical BMW. When you own a BMW these days, ever since the introduction of the K 100, you have to marry the dealer. Yamaha FJR. I had an FJ. I’ve had many Japanese in-line four-cylinder motor cycles, I will say this about these machines. They are perfect. They do everything well, you don’t have to marry the dealer, but every in-line four-cylinder Japanese motorcycle I have ever ridden feels and sounds the same-busy..The FJA I had threw off our a lot of heat, so did it’s direct Cousin the Kawasaki concourse. That is another perfect Soul-less Japanese motorcycle..They are perfect, but they are Shin/crotch roasters when the temperature is above 80°.. they can’t help it. You’re sitting behind that faring, and that enormous radiator with twice the number of pistons pouring out that heat from that Buzzi motor. All those in-line fours they were smooth, but they have that typical common feel, that high frequency buzz of two pistons at a time stopping at the ends of their stroke together and reversing direction. They’re well-balanced, but you still always get that same sound and feel I have an in line four... then there’s the Moto Guzzi.. it is not supposed to be fast, this is an adults sport touring machine. Simple, reliable, easy to work on. You definitely never have to go back to the dealer for routine service. You can adjust the valves without even removing the fuel tank in less than an hour with common tools that everyone has in their toolbox. you can probably do the valve adjustment with just the tools in the tool kit. No shims, no removing the camshaft to get at things..You can also change the brake fluid and the hydraulic clutch fluid with no worries about accidentally getting air in the system such as on the BMW. Heaven help you if you get air in the system on a BMW ABS brake system. Ask the actor ewan McGregor and his friend Charlie Boorman about getting brake problems with a BMW ABS brake system. They had problems while traveling around the world, there was a television series about their trip that I watched every week. They had brake problems in Mongolia with their BMW brakes. Even though they were on satellite communication phones with factory technicians/engineers, they could not get the brakes to work at all. Even if you just get air in the system, the computer completely shut down the breaking to both wheels..Not only could they not fix the brakes to work even a little bit, they had to find transportation in the middle of nowhere to get that motorcycle to the nearest train station to ship it back to England from Mongolia. If you’re working on your own BMW ABS brakes just to change the brake fluid, and you get air in the system, you will have to have that motorcycle transported to the dealer to have him plug into the computer and reset the system so you will have brakes again.. no such worries on the Guzzi..It has ABS brakes, but if there is a fault in the brake system, the brakes automatically revert to old fashion non-ABS brakes and they keep working. In fact, you can actually turn the brakes ABS system off so that you will actually have brakes. on places like gravel downhill roads, dirt roads, traveling down grassy slopes, even getting caught in the snow, you will have brakes on the Guzzi.. I experienced ABS brakes on my be only BMW , I was on a gravel down Hill Road. I touch the brakes, and the pedal and the handlebar brake lever went dead. It was as though someone open the bleeder valves on the calipers. I had zero brakes, Because the ABS computer got the signal that the wheel was walking up, and it stopped pumping pressure to the calipers. You don’t notice it on a car too much because you’ve got four wheels on the ground, but on a motorcycle you actually only have one good braking wheel, and when ABS kicks in on that front wheel, you have no brakes... that is actually the reason I got rid of my BMW because of that scare of having no brakes when the ABS took over on my one and only BMW.. I have a Norge, I had a BMW, I had a Yamaha FJ, my knowledge is not Japanese perfect, and you don’t have to marry the dealer the way you do with the BMW. I have approximately 220,000 miles behind Barz of my four moto Guzzi machines since i got my first guzzi in 1979.. I never had a mechanical failure on any of my guzzis... other than brakes, tires,fluids, filters, I had to buy one throttle cable that I didn’t trust anymore,2 oil pressure sensor switches, and I always buy spare valve cover gaskets to have ready to go when I do valve cover removal‘s to adjust the valves... Guzzi’s are relatively simple, reliable, white on their feet, they have excellent brakes, large fuel tanks, they don’t roast you in hot weather, and you rarely see someone else riding the same bike during bike night gatherings.. it is February, 2021, I have had my Norge since 2008. it has an excellent six speed transmission, single-sided swingarm, ABS brakes that can be turned off, side stand and center stand, the windshield goes up and down electronically, it has heated grips with three heat settings, fantastic projector beam headlights .. and if you ever have a problem, you don’t have to go to the dealer, the onboard computer display will flash the code, much like a code reader you plug into your car, the Guzy code reader system is built-in and it will tell you which part needs to be replaced such as may be an oxygen sensor or a mass airflow sensor.. then you can just order the part and put it in yourself. I’ve never had to do that but I am aware that the machine has that code reader system built-in. Moto Guzzi’s have one more thing that BMW and all Japanese motorcycles do not have. And that is, a soul. Character.. when you’re on a Guzzi.. you realize it is not a Soul less thing. You realize that it has a living breathing thing. Minority reminds me of a radial engine airplane or a steam locomotive. You can feel that it is a living machine. it’s alive....I like that

    This is a wonderful review both for comparing one bike to another and giving excellent details on a particular bike. I really wish that more motorcycle mechanics would do reviews. It's okay when the reviewers are guys that know how to express the characteristics of how a bike performs plus how all the different technology works when one is riding a bike but more important to me is what goes into doing maintenance and fixing anything that has failed.. I am pretty sure that I haven't seen a more complete review than this one by @jodyfresnack4758. I know that it was done a couple of years ago but the information contained within the review is still very relevant and very comprehensive in the way that it covered so many things. Thank you for writing an excellent review .

    I own a 2013 Yamaha FJR1300A, with a Sargent seat and handlebar risers. I'm a 57 year old man, and am 6' 1" tall. I've ridden my Yamaha FJR1300a, up to 950 miles in one day, without any problems, back or otherwise. Summer before last I took it on a nearly 8000 mile trip in 20 days. It returned mid 40's mpg, also. No back pain. No shoulder pain. Bottom line... it's not going anywhere. Staying in my stable. She's my Japanese mistress. GREAT bike.

    In Sept 2014 I traded in my 2005 FJR1300 for an R1200RT. In summer 2015 I set out from Utah to ride in the last three of the lower 48 states that I had not yet ridden (South Carolina, Delaware, and Maine, stopping in Indianapolis for the MotoGP race). I put in four 650+ mile days. My comments: *Initially the BMW felt slower than the Yamaha, then I discovered DYNA throttle mode. After that they felt comparable. *The only thing cheap on a BMW is the rider. *The weather protection on the BMW is really excellent; as long as you don't slow down it takes a pretty good rainstorm to get you wet. *Damn do I need a new seat for the BMW. *The BMW (surprisingly) has a lighter feeling shifter; much more snick-snick. *Though the BMW is lighter (and almost always feels that way) paddling backwards uphill in a gravelly parking lot is harder because the footpegs get in the way of your feet. *The BMW saddlebags just work better (nothing wrong with the Yamaha saddlebags). *Stereo speakers on a touring bike are senseless. *It takes a while to get comfortable cornering aggressively with the BMW suspension. I did get comfortable and I really appreciate the way that throttle and braking do not upset the chassis as much as the Yamaha. *Now I have to ride in Alaska and the Canadian provinces.

    I thought it was a good fair comparison. I went with the Guzzi Norge Myself because I like the old-school vibe and ease of repair with less gadgets and gizmos break down.

    The FJR is a great all around bike and it is super easy to maintain. Every maintenance job on it can be done in minutes. Oil and filter change, minutes. Rear drive oil change, minutes. Spark plug change, minutes. Air filter, minutes. You can even get to the valves quick and the intervals are long and most of the time no adjustments are required.

    So what's your point? Did you ever look at the LC-boxer? It can't be easier to access an engine (and it's parts) as it is with the boxer. You can even get to the clutch in like 5-10 minutes..

    What no Connie? I've had a Connie for 1 1/2 years. Very impressed with this machine fast, fun and agile. Have not ridden the BMW but at $20k vs $13k not to mention the maintanence cost is equivilant to a Harley I can do without. I don't honestly think this is the best tour bike review.

    Guzzi having less electronics makes it a better deal for me than the others. It really reminds me the legacy of the R1100RT series, more classical touring bike.

    So the R1200RT is only about a $1000 more? Have you tried actually buying one at that price? All the ones available in my area are well over $20,000 with some pushing $23,0000. Add to that the much higher maintenance costs and the lower reliability and you get a slightly better bike for a much higher cost of ownership.

    Good review. I'm glad you finally included the Norge! I owned the new GT8V, and now I own the new RT. So I have to agree with your assessment. The Guzzi is surprisingly nimble and comfortable. But the new RT is pure quality all around. I know them both intimately. But not the FJR. Good job!

    The FJR is simply a phenomenal machine, and can be had under $15k (ES) from the vast majority of dealers making ti an even better deal!

    I’ve owned the RT and presently own a 2014 K1600 GT. I prefer the GT all around to the RT. It’s the best bike I’ve ever ridden.

    You know what I would like to see from you guys? There is no way right now that I can afford to buy a new motorcycle, so having a used bike is probably where I'm going to be looking. I commute 35 miles each way, each day, and that is on top of a ten mile ferry trip. I want a sport touring motorcycle, something I can commute to work on, and something I can ride somewhere on the weekend. So, what I'd like to see from you would be the best USED Sport touring bike from the last ten years for under $10K. I think this would be an awesome shootout, and for those of us who can't afford to drop $20,000+ on a new BMW, maybe you could advise on a used K1200GT, or a used FJR1300AE, or a Concours, or an ST1300. Something in that price range that would take into account reliability, maintenance costs, mileage, (and how many miles you can expect to get out of a well taken care of bike), and all those factors. If you do this, it would be great.

    ***** At the moment, I've again become unemployed, damned economy, but everyone that I've talked to who has owned a K1X00GT, and there have been several, since BMW is a big seller in the Seattle area, have been wonderfully pleased with their bikes, the reliability of them, how well they ride. Most of them have well over 50K miles on them, as well. Really, I woule like a K1600GT, but those are BIG bikes. At 6' tall, I'm not sure I'd want it as a first bike, although a FJR1300 was recommended by several people as a good first bike for me.

    They honestly seemed to be very biased towards BMW in general. Not everyone cares about how fast it is, the electronics crap it comes with or other technical specs of a motorcycle. 80+ HP is plenty for anyone, even when riding two-up. The key thing for me is the fun/vibe I get from it and its comfort. I have test ridden 3 different Moto Guzzis in the past, older than 2014 models and they were phenomenal bikes. They may not be the fastest, etc. but it was a pleasure riding them, from V7 to Breva to California to Norge. I am actually thinking about getting a Stelvio to replace my VStrom. Also, they are so easy to work on, so if you are a shade tree mechanic, MG is superior to most other brands.

    I prefer the Yamaha. Yes it may be a tad bit wider, but a hell of a lot more comfortable.The one I truly prefer you didn't have in this segment is the Kawasaki Concurs..

    The wonderful thing about the RT is that it’s a ‘rich man’s’ bike! That means there are a LOT of used RT’s out there that were purchased new and never ridden. Just take yer time and watch the classifieds. I’ve always purchased used with almost no miles on the clock. They are picked up quickly, but they’re there. Regarding the maintenance, most riders can do the majority of maintenance themselves on the RT because of the engine design. I’d HATE to check the valves on an FJR, Concors or a K1600. With the RT it’s a breeze! Absolutely fantastic bike!

    I definitely agree with the BMW being the best cause I owe a K1200LT, but I love the Moto Guzzi as well. However, disappointed that they did not have the Honda ST1300 in this shootout.

    Britex3186 the bikes are made for 5'8 riders-- shorty's want a different view as well as the giants-- you can look up dimensions and it explains seat height you can get a seat made for you if you are tall to sit up higher good luck--- I just go to the dealers and sit on them-- bmw will let you test ride -- I like the bmw myself-- the boxer engine is in many many motorcycles and if maintance is followed from what I have seen 100k is no prob-- but really after about 60k isn't time for a new one anyway??

    I love that BMW, but the price! Oof! Because it's not just base price. BMW doesn't give you a full bike at base price -- you always have to pay extra.

    So what's "a full bike" for you? For base-price you get ABS, traction control, riding modes, adjustable windscreen, heated grips, on-board computer, adjustable rear-shocks.. IMHO, that IS "a full bike". Everything you can get for extra money, are extra gizmos, you don't really need. Heck, most manufacturers don't even offer the things you can order for a BMW at all. Integrated sat-nav, this multi-controller to operate all the gizmos, semi-automatic electronic suspension (yes, you read that right: it is semi-automatic and adaptive, not only electronically adjustable), the blipper, keyless-go, wireless central locking... Try to get that stuff for your Honda ST1300, the FJR or Kawi Concours. Impossible.

    I have a K1200LT and a FJR1300. While I love both of them..Really.. Maintenance. Look up BMW motorcycle drive shaft problems and BMW R bike transmission spline lube.. I think they've addressed the spline lube issue on the newer K bikes. I just finished replacing a drive shaft on mine, not pretty or cheap. But I still love the BMW.

    I'd love to see the RT vs the updated 2016 FJR. I own one. I know I'd appreciate the lightness and ergonomics of the RT, and it's probably the only bike I'd consider to replace my FJR unless I wanted to go for much smaller and lighter (F800GT). I love the idea of the K1600GT but it's ultimately a heavier faster more comfortable and more complex FJR. I have the A model as I don't think Yamaha's ES is worth the extra cost and complexity, and I don't miss it, so I'd be happy with the base model RT. That said, cost is still the factor. I got my '16 FJR1300 new for an amazing price, so the RT would have to be preowned or a heavily discounted leftover or demo. Maybe there is a base model somewhere in that price range. Need to go test ride!

    They are not coming to New Zealand because Honda is no longer making that model. Honda did not seem very interested in staying in this category, as the ST1300 was never updated since it's introduction in 2003. During the time that Honda did make this model, the Concours and FJR1300 were updated twice. Honda detuned the motor for the CTX1300, which I suspect is not selling that well. The ST was the heaviest sport touring model made. Handled it's weight well, but would have been noted for it's weight in this test. Acceleration and top speed are about the same as the BMW R1200RT.

    No Triumph Trophy? Come on guys, you know this begs a comparison. The Multistrada is also closer to this segment compared to the enduros. Only if the concours 14 had cruise control.

    some of the reviews ive watched are older and at the end to not get the full answer is annoying.why is it so differcult to add the extra minute for results. I enjoy what you do but like the sports touring ive just watched I'm left wondering which was best bike.maybe if its that important we go of else where put a link up gentleman please

    The RT is definately my favourite!! Why?? I ride this one for just over a year, so I know this is a fun and comfortable bike to ride :-)

    alwayslearning thefacts - Sadly the ST is know more 😰 so the FJR will get more attention in my opinion. I own BMW K1200LT and wanting to trade for a Honda VFR 1200F non DCT. The Triumph Trophy needs more bugs working out of it and there's a lot of plastic on that sucker. If it goes down better have deep pockets. The RT boxer engines don't turn my mojo on, the Concours is awesome but still no cruise 😱 I love a few different models but what stops me from pulling the trigger on most new bikes is a piss poor colour selection.. Why they only offer one colour every year beats me and so stops me from shelling out the readies.

    W Hoggdoc best bike ever made in my opinion st1300 is a great bike I was a goldwing guy for years until I road the st1300 2004 I switched to the st1300 been one one ever sence and they eat up miles I put 142000 on my 04 I’m on a 2014 now just turned 56000 still runs like new

    i've just signed in at motorcycle.com but found nowhere to leave a post following this article.so i came here. i went over the comments below and found nothing about John's gear.i mean i reallllly like John's gear and the way he rode those bikes. Here is the KEY thing: anyone konws about John's helmet and the outfit he was wearing?? plz see this and reply. last but not the least:i think taller riders DO NOT match the bikes very well.i prefer it when a 5'7 guy ride a sport touring bike.they just fit so well like John Burns did with the R1200rt .

    Those bikes u mention are sports bikes with bags!! Believe I have a 2012 ninja 1000 which is in the same class and did two 7 hr trips on it and it was PAINFUL!! wrist , back , knees, u name it!! These are sport touring bikes, lean angles , 0-60 under 5 secs, cornering and so on .. True touring bikes are victory cross countries and harley rd kings!

    +John Delfgou dude u got to be kidding right? Do anybody know the definition of "sports tourer"? Blending sports bike with touring with safety and comfort..so you're saying the FJR is a tourer...dude u got to be kidding..you can knees drag on a FJR...its 0-60 in 4 sec vs most sports bikes in 3..sports bike suspension..top speed 150mph!! Seriously?? just a tourer? It's no way you can put these bikes in the same class as a victory cross or Yamaha vstar 1300 deluxe..these bikes will eat a tourer up..hell I went up against a 2014 Harley street glide moded out with my bmw 650 scooter and he got me off the line and pulled away to car lengths and could not pull no further for a mile and soon as we go into a corner he tried the best he could but I got so close I wanted it to pass him but it was too on coming traffic and it looked like his bike was going to come up from under him..there is no way I would've been able to do that to a RT , FJR and dam sure not to a K1600!! These bikes are SPORTS TOURERS!! They just made them where u can sports tourer longer..I'm sure people on the track would laugh it someone said their Ninja 250 or ninja 650 are sports bikes!! With its raised handle bars and tune down engines but they are..I guess 1 is a sport and the other is a super sport..maybe we should call a Honda vfr super sport touring and a FJR sports touring...

    I wonder why these guys don't mention several of the finest sport touring bikes on the road today. I also wonder why they don't discuss bike depreciation and maintenance. It can be a bit frustrating when you learn that your new toy has dropped 30% in value when you drive it off the floor and that maintenance/recalls can be very expensive and time consuming.

    kept saying the BMW only had 110 hp and in reality the bike you tested was the first year of the liquid cooled boxer…that motor puts out 125 hp…..

    eric strada No they weren't…they just were saying it in general and any manufacturer statistics in brochures and such always give the bhp at the motor…not the rear wheel….

    The FJR has 127 rear wheel hp, the Guzzi has 87 (or whatever they said) and the bmw has 110. These are all rear wheel hp measured by the testers, they are not figures given by the manufacturers. Manufacturers are the only ones who use useless data such as hp at the crank and dry weights.

    Seems to me that North American bikes are detuned compared with the European Models. The RT1200 in Europe and Australasia is 125bhp. The Honda ST1300 Pan European is 117bhp in North America, but again, 125BHP in Europe and Australasia. Must be something to do with emission regs in north America!

    The BMW is the best bike in my opinion, however, you can buy 2 Yamaha for the same cost as the BMW thereforn there is more value on the table for Yamaha

    Had a 2014 Norge until the cam gear fell off at 15000 km_total junk! Dealer or New York office wouldn't do a thing for me. Have a R1200RT and its faster, more comfortable, better toys, doesn't rattle you like the Norge and isn't top heavy like the Norge. Easier to maneuver when driving through a parking lot. Also have a K1200R and I wouldn't trade quality for any of the Italian ego bikes. Cant comment on the FJR.

    Samual Iam V-Strom is a different class (Adv touring - and really in a class by itself being a 1000 - fantastic bike IMO)... and the later were in the previous (aforementioned) episode when the big beamer won. They really need to include owner cost in their comparisons.

    Agreed. Owner cost can add up real quick. I bought a KLR650 last year and while MSRP is $6,500 the total cost came out to be around $8,000 after everything (I didn't have a down payment).

    Triumph Trophy SE is a better bike, better price and easier to maintain than the RT. The Guzzi is a joke - no maintenance network and Italian electrics

    Lousy review --- highly subjective with emphasis on BMW ... even misquoted FJR specs as 127 hp vs actual 141.5 hp and nominal comments on the FJR. I know this area from Salton Sea to Idyllwild and have ridden it many times --- just over 100 miles --- not much of a ride test from my perspective. FJR owner ........ obviously!

    Sorry, but the FJR specs were quoted right . . . . On the other hand they give the impression that they were comparing an ES FJR with an all-dressed RT - BMW charges more than $4000 more than the price they quoted for the premium package and the comfort windshield. These are just a bunch of short BMW fan boys.

    127 is rear wheel hp.... Crankshaft Hp is 141 for the Yamaha. Just like 125 Hp is Craknshaft Hp for the BMW but 111 at the rear wheel.

    So what makes it a lousy review, the fact that they didn't pick your bike? Motorcycle online are not the only magazine picking this bike as the best sports tourer - Check the outstanding reviews and comparison wins in Cycle World, Motorcyclist, Rider and other magazines from around the globe. The RT is a dominant force in sports touring. MO acknowledges the price advantage of the other bikes and the FJR is a fine bike but its not the BEST bike.

    Funny , BMW took all the bikes away so we couldnt get one they had to FIX stuff, BUT its the best bike !!??? The FJR is THE BEST EVER sports tourer EVER , 20 Years minimal changes, I own a BMW and and FJR, I would NEVER own a BMW bike so many reliability reports from Journos WORLDWIDE , Yah i GOTTA HAVE ME A PIECE OF THAT , LOL, You want comfort Range Power RELIABILITY , No Bike has THAT Like an FJR , NO Bike EVER WILL

    FJR: I don't care. Having owned a Yamaha, they can piss up a rope. Someone can let me know when they stop selling bikes that are 90% finished and have moronic wiring harnesses, or unrideable throttles, or pogo suspension. I really only want to know how the RT would compare to a Multistrada.
