I got this car In November. In February I got t-boned by a tundra and everyone in the car was 100% fine no scrape sprains broken bones nothing. So I can vouch for its safety.

Just glad everyone is ok. Holy smokes!
This was one of the best car reviews I've ever seen! You covered all the things you want to know about a car in a funny way. It's great getting the specs in text instead of in talk. Great job as always Derek D!
Best review I've seen so far. It's hard to find something funny, creative and informative all in one!
DD is right. It's the little details that really counts. That won't go on a brochure or ads so it serves no value to the manufacutuer. But it shows that engineers and product designers cared about making the customer's life a bit easier.
Yeap, never seen a rearview camera selfie intro, you the man Derek D! FLD for the win.
Good review Derek. It would be fun to have bob shubin do one of these casual reviews one of these days
I have this car in black. I honestly could not be happier, this car is great on gas, very stylish and it drives like a dream. I highly recommend this car to anyone who is on the market for a new compact

do you have the Sedan or the Hatchback?
good job on the review. You make it funny, interesting and informative at the same time. Cheers.
I only wish success to you guys. Never stop making vids.
Good car Review Derrick! Liked the specs with a good transition into Pro/ Cons of the cars as well as opinions where they could improve things but were still good!
I'm digging the review. Keep it up!
Thank you for this review! I finally catch on that showcases the sedan and NOT the hatchback (I've had for 5 years, I want a trunk again). Derek D, very funny, very relatable, and gave a good honest review. Thanks again
I think putting the FLD's that have Derek D in them on this channel is a good idea. The other ones, I can go look for them,
love the gear stick camera
I just got a red 2015 model, and yes got to get wheels and tint maybe an K&N drop filter and I'm happy.
Intro with back rear camera Friggin cleaver!
I'm sorry but this one isn't "top of the line." The actual S-Grand Touring doesn't come with a 6 speed manual (the I-Grand Touring does). You're missing the fogs, bi-xenon with auto level, and a plethora of other bits and pieces. I'm a Mazda guy so I take this review seriously because I'm actually looking at the Mazda 6 Touring. Mazda = Looks sexy, has low overall cost of ownership, and beating Honda in many categories. Also, manuals in just about every line EVEN the Mazda 5 micro van (which I currently own a 2009 5MT version of).
great review man, good work, great car.
Right on Derek...morphing into a reviewer as well. Cool.
Derek's spot on, especially about the road noise on the freeway. I just drove home my Mazda3 and it's pretty loud. But you could just turn up the volume I guess. That is the only thing that gives you a hint that it is an economy car. Everything else is amazing. You get so much for so less. My friends who bought poverty pack BMW 3 and Merc CLA are jealous of my car!
Top of the line model is the 3 sGT which I just bought. HID's, LED DRL's, LED tails, 2.5L engine, 18 inch rims. THAT is the one to review and to buy!!
I agree; 41 mpg highway is really EXCELLENT ! The Scion tC by comparison gets only 31 mpg highway. The larger 2.5L engine SUCKS a lot more gas, and is a lot more expensive also, so the best overall value is the smaller engine version.
Nice review. It's hard to find reviews of the 2.0 so thanks for that. I tested both engines and honestly the 2.5, while more powerful, didn't have enough extra power for me to justify eventually buying it. Though, I do want to learn to drive manual, seems like extra fun while driving. Other than that, this was a lot more enjoyable to drive than a civic, elentra, or scion's hatchback (forget what it's called) and the overall styling is by far better than those cars.
Derek, a car review is incomplete without at least a shot on the highway at high speed. Just like Backstreet Boys.
Best car review!! This guy is awesome
Big D, you really need to do all of the test drives. Funny and informative review.. ☆ 2 THUMBS UP ☆
your right about the LED/HID headlights, sometimes its a deal changer :)
You are a really good rewier
Mazda has really stepped up their game! You get a lot of car for the money, and the design looks really good!!
Hey Derek D, when are we going to see you FLDetouring your CLA?
+Jonathan Hatfield yea I agree with you, I can't wait until a new RX-7 gets here. And I think the best Mazda 3 before the MS3 was the Protege, the chassis is great, I never drove older 6s or the RX8 but I'm sure they where good too
I have been driving this car since Nov. 13. (Mine is the Touring model with no sunroof.) I like it. If you floor it from a stop, the very aggressive stability management will stop the acceleration at the slightest amount of wheel spin-- Probably in a passing situation there will be less intervention. I tested the 185hp model and there was even more intervention--flattening the acceleration a 60mph or 70 mph. After this I tested the 155hp version five times from a full stop--the stability management intervened only one time at about 30mph. All the magazines praised this car so I just went ahead and leased it. My last car was a Chevy Cruz Eco.
I love this guy.
You said 0-60 in 7 secs, but the detail specs screen shows 8.1 secs... I believe it's 8.1 secs in a 4 cyl 2.0 lt. 155hp Skyactive engine... The little details in life!! Great show!
Derek D's awesome !
Yes, FLD, more reviews like this. ++ If I want traditional car reviews and opinion, I'll go over to /DRIVE, but these casual FLD style reviews have their own unique appeal. One question though, why is this not on the FLDetours channel?
Hey Derek, do a review of your CLA!
That Grand Touring is only "sort of" the top of the line...the 2.5 liter, the Mazda 3 s Grand Touring, is the true top of the line. That gets the 18" wheels, real leather, the HID lights, stuff like that.
0:49 0-60:8.1 secs; 1:20 0-60: 7 secs. Mistake?
Wait i thought the Mazda 3 GT only came in the automatic how did you get the manual?
I know the area n the bad roads sum up new jersey in this video very well. Nice compact car to save money. N keep saving.
You should do the new MK7 gti
that's some professional camera work .. loved the review .. great presentation Double D (see what i did there ! ) .. BTW Derek is your sister single by any chance, i mean a girl that drives stick and have a cool brother instead of an annoying one .. she is probably my DREAM GIRL .. any way keep up the good work guys .
Take a look at where they put the front license plate on the Mazda 3 killed it for me was about to get one........
My Girlfriend just bought this car so of course I watch alot of reviews and this is THE BEST BY FAR! You're hella funny @derek D
I'm surprised you didn't mention the 170 HP Elantra as an alternative
Hmmm in Montreal and in Toronto, I know that that version of Mazda3 is in between GS and GT. It has dual zone and bose speakers.... Here however, our GT model only comes with an automatic dual clutch with a head up display, 18in alloy wheels, with option for heated leather seats, etc. On top of that, it has 184hp and 185 torque! Only downfall for our GT here is that it's only available with automatic transmission.
How tall are you?
( I completely agree on the wheel thing...) I see where they run into problems with the design language. By that I mean to make the cabin proportional to the front and rear space they increased the thickness between the wheel arches and the top of the fender ( front and rear ) Why they didn't put lower springs in it to make the wheels closer to the wheel arches to look like the wheels filled out the arches better ( to make them look biggger ) I don't know probably because of road clearance ( or the larger wheel tire package) Anyway...
The 1st generation too was beautiful.
Which is faster this or 2014 Honda Civic (143hp)? I don't know how weight goes or whichever is more fun to drive?
Winter tires are loud.
Man, you are funny. Made this review less boring.
I love this car
Yo Derek, quick question, is it, 8.1 sec to 60(which is what the print said at the beginning of the vid and sounds about right with the power number) or is it 7 sec(which is what you said). 1.1 seconds odds kind of a big difference.
Derek quick question about the heated seats, does the heat affect the leather in the long run ? thank you
The Mazda 3 is hardly the only car with mats like those
13:1 compression on 87 octane is epic.
it's funny that the things he didn't like about the car comes standard in the higher trim "S" models
I clicked on this because I thought it was the FastLaneCar haha still a good video
cnettv brian cooley has already done that type of intro
best FLDetours yet! Oh wait... what happened to that?
Guys if you're watching this, don't be deceived by "top-of-the-line"! This is the i Grand Touring (yes, it's top-of-the-line for the i section) but the s Grand Touring has those things that Derek wanted such as the HID headlights, LED daytime running lights, 18" Alloys, leather upholstery, and 2.5L SKACTIV-G that is used in both Mazda6 and the CX-5. It'll run you $2500 more to go from i GT to s GT (MSRP wise). I personally think it's worth it to pay that premium and get much more high quality stuff. If you're wondering which car you should buy in the compact segment, buy this. It's the sportiest of them all, it has a good price tag (even for s GT), and it's reliable. People have a misconception thinking Mazda works with Ford on a same chassis. Mazda's are built in Japan on a totally new chassis, with "sport" transmission and engine which all combine to represent SKYACTIV. People praise how the engine is really fuel-efficient and responsive. Auto-journalists really like the transmission and the fact that it's not close to feeling like a CVT, but an actual 6-speed. The kodo design is really amazing, and the look has personally got me at hello. haha well I don't know about that last part.
This car seems really nice... Kinda kicks the Civic's ass, and I like civics. I drive an 06 EX, stick shift of course. The only 9th gen civic I've driven was a 2012 hybrid but yeah. This car is coping stayles and the interior looks great.
This was a good idea putting this here because a few people like me probably didn't know about the review channel. I think it's great that Mazda is trying to break the mold with their styling but they went a little too far on this one imo. The back looks too small and light and the front too big and heavy. The swooshes on the sides look off too. Compared to other vehicles in its class it does look more substantial.
Way to branch out and evolve FLD :)
Did Wax make the outro music?
Huh, we get HID Bi-Xenon headlamps starting with the Attraction trim level ($19790), along with LED DRL and LED stop lights. Romania.. for.. the win, I suppose?
should have looked at the sp25, i doubt many people on this channel would consider the model below the sp25 which isn't even very powerful to begin with
Sorry to break the news to you Derek, but the only Mazda 3 that gets real leather is the S Grand Touring so basically the car with the larger engine. That same car gets HIDs and even a Heads Up Display. ;-)
I support Mazda direction, particularly now that BMW seems to be dropping the ball. I wish Mazda would make a nice rear wheel drive sports sedan with about 200+ horse power.
Loud cause of winter tires.
lol my 92 s10 has that same pad on the rug, except its bigger
hahaha! awesome review, this guy is hilarious 😂
maybe you did and I missed it but you should review your new cla
I have the 13' Mazdaspeed 3 and am planning on trading mine in for a Auto Mazda 3 (hatch) my daughter will be driving soon and my wife can't drive the Speed 3 it's hard to teach her with the Speed 3's power. Tough decision.
0-60 in 7 seconds, or 8.1?
DEREK SEEMS LIKE YOU GOT WINTER TIRES THAT'S WHY IT IS LOUD YOOO :-D
Gone are the days that the only cars with Bose sound systems were Maserati's! haha!
are you in NJ? i want to buy mazda3 here can you help me?
I can't find the review of your CLA... Pretty sure you said it's done already. I know I'm probably not looking hard enough.

how high do skyactiv engines rev?
@ramibos6549

6500-6800 rpm depends on model. Actually diesel ones are big up from usual 4500rpm to skyactive 5200rpm
i'm either getting this or the new civic.
Quite odd that if it's the top of the line model and it doesn't have Xenon's and LED drl as standard, like we have here in Europe.
I have the 2014 Mazda 3 hatch version and on the sticker it says: Total Weight 4001lbs!

That's heavy!!
I dont care what anyone says I think your funny :-)
First of all, chipotle is never a bad decision... Anyways, the car is probably loud on the highway because those winter tires practically have more tread than my jeep wrangler... Also, I think D man should do more FLDetours
The 2.5 Skyactiv Mazda 3 is the premium of the Skyactiv lineup and the pride of Kodo design and I have the Japanese import version.. Made in Japan 100%. It is the better than the rival the Mercedes cla250 and the rest of the segment is gas efficient cars. This car is now used at Skip Barbers track at Laguna Seca to train novice drivers. Emptied out with no spare and on a brisk day, with less Gas in tank 0-60 is under 6 seconds in sport mode. Fast as a Porsche boxter. this Skyactiv is no gimmick it's patented and can achieve 41 mpg average on a 30± mile do very from Riverside to Ventura County. from this 2.5 litter NONE THE LESS!
That's not the GT (Grand Touring). It has 16" tyres and no front chrome on fog lights as a quick giveaway, there's no paddles shifts on the steering wheel.

I thought gt was the 2.5L
Hilarious guy! Great review.
Did they make you wear the helmet hair for safety reason?
really love this car, the saloon looks much better than the hatchback in my opinion. but im torn between this and Mercedes A180.
There seems to be some confusion as to exactly which model and spec this car is, so allow me to throw another spanner in the works.....! I have recently test driven and ordered a new mid range Mazda 3 hatch. I will tell you exactly which one in just a moment, but I can tell you it was only released here less than a month ago, in March 14, and as yet there are no 4 door sedans available However, the model I am getting DOES have Bi-Xenon headlights, foglamps, LED daylight running lights, LED tails, 18 inch alloys, the touch screen infotainment system, heads-up display, and 2 USB ports It DOESN'T have the Bose sound system, back-up camera, REAL leather seats, smart entry system, smart city brake assist or rear vehicle monitoring. It is a 6 speed auto - so no paddle shifters or manual transmission. Oh yeah - almost forgot! What engine is it? It's the 2 litre 155 bhp lump....that's TWO litre, not the 2.5s....making it a Mazda 3i ...and by the way, I live and work in Thailand, so it would seem the specs vary from country to country. Final point....although I didn't get up to motorway speeds and so can't really comment on wind noise with any authority, at normal driving speeds, driving on Bangkok's crappy concrete surfaces road noise was not high enough to warrant any negative comment. Fine for a not too expensive compact hatch. If I wanted a silent ride up to big Merc, Jag, or Rolls standards I would steal one.
The singing part has me dying LOL.....But yeah I agree with Jonathan Hatfield. Get us some MAZDASPEED Action Mazda!! I only buy fun FAST car with handling. ;)
Derek is better as car reviewer than just sitting in studio. Honest and fun ish :P Mazda3, the worst thing on it aye too small wheels
Call when they make a Mazdaspeed version of the 3 and 6. Otherwise Not interested. As a former owner of two first gen Mazda 6s sedans and an RX8 you would think Mazda would have customers like me in mind. They lost me as a customer until they put some performance back in their cars. You can go anywhere and get good MPG. That's not why people want a Mazda. Mazda has traditionally made drivers cars. Apparently not so much anymore. Sorry Mazda, despite the attractive styling this car it is a fail for me.

Mazda does make a Speed 3.
Mazda 3 is the easiest manual car to drive. It's so easy it's widely used in driving school in Japan
The 6 looks so much better than the 3. The 3 just looks too bulky, especially with those wheels. Seems like a pretty nice car, though.
