how biased can you be bro. You didnt even mention miles per gallon, which the mazda dominates in.

He did mention the price difference ($1000), which will give you a similar (leather-clad) steering wheel and gear knob, as well as another $500 left for other options. Once you look past base models, the Germans are just too expensive. Everything is an optional extra and costs a lot of $$$.

love my Mazda. VW needs to support its products more to be popular. They should have kept the 10 yr warranty, they need it with their reputation for poor repair record.

Steering is heavy? bs! The steering is sharpe and just a smooth as well as light handling, I tested drove the manual transmission not because my age group can't drive a MT, but loved the new mazda3 2014. I'm 6'1" tall and fit perfect. Can't complain at all.

Own 2011 mk6 golf 1.4 tsi 90 kw now (because i am cheap bastard and dont like maintenance costs of big engines ^^.. that said)... I Have around 34k miles and use car daily. So far i have no issues. Small maintenance for oil change and air-filter changed at around...every 12,5k something miles (longlife) and recently i had big maintenance regarding brake(s), new front tires, fluids, oil and airfilters etc ... Never owned a Mazda but so far im very happy with my VW. My last cars were a vw polo 9n1 1.4 64kw. and vw passat 1.8 170hp hehe had to look that up. My wife drives a vw polo 9n3 1.2 tsi 105hp and that car is, after 4 years daily use and around 28k miles, very cheap in mileage, reliability and maintenance aswel. I hear the Asian car-manufacturers make good reliable cars, but again ... so far... zi Germans haven't let me down.... (and personally i like designs of both interior and exterior of German cars but that is personal)

The steering is heavy on the Mazda? It fees really really light to me.

The Golf 7 looks like the Golf 6 which looks again like the Golf 5. There is nothing wrong with a Golf, but why the hell would you buy a new one if you can get a 5 year old one that looks the same for half the price? Mazda on the other hand has made their best looking hatchback since the 1990s 323F. You can't make a small car look any better than this!!!

+Majd Dasoki What if they simply make a better car, assuming you are after comfort and not outright excitement? I for one have been put off Mazda simply due to the complaints about road noise. So many roads where I live are coarse chip bitumen, when I choose between excitement and noise, or comfort and quietness, me being a family man will choose the latter.

You just missed out on the KIA Cerato

vw cars in general look so dated imo, why cant they bring the Scirocco to the us, now thats a sexy car.

I have no doubt they have plans for it, maybe in 2015 or for 2016 now that they have a factory in Mexico.

Ive just driven both & have the Cruze2.0TD CDX (leather) and am torn. The VW Golf has some nice things but the base model is just that (about the only nice thing was start/stop & switch handbrake. The Mazda3 base neo was easy to pass over for the extras in the MAXX and the safety pack was $1500 but the local dealer had it in auto drive away for 26,550 QLD which i thought was excellent value for a 2014 model. The VW has a basic interior, liked the dash layout but got used to the MAXX quick enough. As for fun to drive, the VW didnt suck, but wasnt as frugal as the sticker suggested, being not much less than the MAXX 2.0 at around 7-8L/100 but im sure i could get a lot lower on cruise/hwy! The 3 has stop/start and cheap safery pack but 2014 models are getting this with auto for a low drive away price. If my CDX wasnt under 3+ years warranty i would have jumped at it immediately! If i was in the city then POLO or GOLF might be cheaper to run BUT not service. parts for the 3 from 3rd party & wreckers will make this the easier to keep going IMO. After going 2TD in the CDX (with leather) im not impressed with the HIGH fixed service price and so/so fuel eco 6.5L/100km cruize@100km HWY and 8-9's in the city (even Bundaberg). I dont think the VW is a bad car but add PAINT/AUTO/SAFETY on even the base model and it will quickly surpass the 3... After researching carsales i think ill try the 2.5L '3' as ROCKHAMPTON have some runout 2014 for $26K drive away in auto and with safety packs!

I drive a VW Golf and just about every hatchback owner wants to go faster than you, even if it means speeding! Sure if I had to drive a toyota, or mazda or peugeot, I'd want to get to my destination asap too! Lovely car, suits me well, 6.5 years and 126,000km no complaints ☺️

Mazda 3 all the way. I drive one myself from 2014 as a beginner car since half a year. Great car by far👍

Golf looks older.

after a year or two of wear and tear, the golf will look like it was made in the early 00's. Expensive to repair too

Golf expensive to repair? Where do you live, on mars? there arent cheaper parts than german parts. Whats expensive is Japanese electronical bullshit. When that dies you can wreck the whole car, because it doesnt pay off to be repaired.

I’m willing to bet that Golf is at some wreckers somewhere in 20 pieces after the DSG/engine blew up and it was scrapped, and the Mazda is probably on its 3rd owner and has near 200,000km on it and still zooming along.

Compared to its price-level i really think the Mazda 3 is a great car. I can easily live with the "down sides" mentioned, but I agree that the new 3 is most interesting in the upper-level trims and from the 2.0 165 HP gasoline version and up. The outside design of the new 3 though..... is by FAR so much more interesting and beautiful than the new Golf - and we all know why: "Cause Golf's must never challenge their hatchback-premium cousin, the Audi A3" ... they don't have that sort of problem at Mazda :)

@@serene4961 u can't even compare the mazda 3 to a golf r u idiot... Overall quality is worse than Mazda... My dad drives one a Golf 7 variant 1.5TSI with 130HP. It has just 67k km and made many problems. The interior quality is not better than the mazda 3 bc I drive one myself a Mazda 3 2014 G120 as a beginner car. It has double km than my dad exactly 140k km and has no problems at all. Just make yearly the service and that's it. The speakers are a lot better than in the golf of my dad bc it's also from bose with 12 speakers. Here in europe we don't have a sport model of the 3 why did u compare it to a golf r. Ur pfp says it all that you don't know anything about cars and comment some shit bc u want to feel better but nobody agree with... Even the new Mazda 3 beat the quality of the golf 8. In the Golf is almost plastic everywhere especially on the dashboard while in the mazda 3 is leather... Sure the golf may be more practical but it looks worse than it's predecessor. You've never driven a Mazda 3 I would say...

All cars prices depreciate sharply 5 years after rolling out of the showroom. Then it's a slower decline dependant on condition and mileage.

So mazda has a bigger engine and gets the same mpg as the gulf. Wow! Mazda for me

Great car, I have a VW right now; however, Mazda has really outdone itself with the 3.

My cousin has a AMG mercedes and his mum has a highline golf 8 speed dual clutch. I ask him which drives better and he said by far the Golf. Lol

All vw designs are so ugly, they all have this box atmosphere about them, I would definitely go for the mazda

i agree with you on vw.but i think seat cars (which vw company owns) are good looking.especially leon.

Having owned a Jetta for 5 years now I must say VW has really lost its touch. The thing is now falling apart on me and all of these vehicles are so behind the times. Think I am going to buy the Mazda 3, for the money there really is no comparison.

VW Golf is just better. We have both in our family, and although it's boring, it just feels better to drive the Golf. Mazda is great as well, but I rather take the Golf on a long trip than the Mazda.

Can't wait from Mazda to release its 1.5 diesel engine that they have announced.

Europe. You know in the USA you can buy a GTI for 25k usda. The cost in most of europe is in the 40k's usda. Similicar cars are far cheaper here in the USA

vw is very old,for my father its ok.or toyota corolla perhaps...mazda is beaytiful.And it is bigger than toyota auris.mercedez A220 technologically superior,fuel economy..excellent choise

Golf has many variations: base 2.5, TDI, GTI and R (coming in 2015?). I would prefer Golf eventhough I drive a 2013 Mazda3 2.0 hatch.

Biased review.

Still prefer VW! It's better than every hatchback. It's perfect the way it is, and exterior looking? Depends on customer's taste - many of them prefer perfection and conservative instead of quite nice, but still looking for it's image car.

When the first Golf in 1976 came a long, it was nothing like conservative, it was revolution! But by the time the Golf 3 came in the 1990s, the Golf seemed to have lost much of his Punk/New Wave attitude of the 1970s and 1980s. It was slowly becoming a very very civilized car for both starting young professionals as aging low grade bank clarks. The Golf just lost its edge over time!

I have an mk7 S trim Golf and I love it. I can sympathize with those who think the golf looks a bit boring, but only on the base model. When paired with the lighting package and 18” alloys, it looks phenomenal. I specifically love the rear end of the car and the interior. I can vouch for the Golf to say the interior looks way better in person. I was skeptical about how the interior looked in pictures before I bought it, but once I saw it in person, I was blown away, it definitely feels premium and looks very good. As for the Mazda, I think although the design of the is a bit more modern, I think the front end is un attractive. Overall I think Volkswagens simply have more heritage and are a bit more special. What makes the Mazda boring to me lies more in the fact that now a days, just about anyone and everyone buys them and it becomes a very basic everyone has one kind of car. In the end, I’m sure both are great cars to the right person, I know mine is.

My family has a golf. I have a honda, a toyota and a saab. The golf does drive better than the honda or toyota and is a lot quieter. I guess mazda will be similar level to a honda or toyota. I like japanese cars for their super reliability, but in terms of driving quality they are still mediocre.

You're right Bro. The mazda looks shapeless to me. They've kinda overtuned it accents and aerodynamics. I guess growing up kids would love it though. On the other hand, vw golf is classic and does everything one needs from functionality to aesthetics.
