Hi there, great video's I particularly like your matter of fact delivery its very thoughtful to explain in detail a lot of things many would take for granted as known. As it happens my 2012 Astra J Estate has the very same goddamn noise! Going through the motions like you... started replacing parts methodically to isolate and rule out. Howver your recording of the noise you had in your later video really helps - its almost identical. Sooo pleased I am likely not going to do this it looks a right ball-ache. So many times less expensive parts are only bl00dy false hope. I am going to short cut to what you found was the cure... for those reading you better do the research like I did. Follow the obvious path in these excellent videos. Top work keep it going.

Brake Caliper carriers on these make a right racket as pin diameters were a tiny bit off in spec, or when the damping rubber wears. Lovely driving along smooth ashphalt but a series of bumps and that sets them off. Very apparent in dry hot weather, but very noticiable in general though. Aside: If your brakes are as fast reacting as your 3m-40s interject; Look on KZread re; car/hydralic lifter disasters...Oh, but wait until you all watch this vid first!... they must be lightning fast. Great stuff.

Thank you for your clear video. It helped me a lot. Also to know the bushing fits in a slotted clamp. I jacked up the right wheel. After hours of fiddling I managed to rather quickly unscrew the front bolt completely from the top, the back bolt from below with a ratched spanner a few turns, then put the car back on the ground and shift the roll bar to the front, the clamp slided out. Then destroy the front rubber slot with a screw driver then from the side, split the clamp from the bushing with a priebar. Quite an undertaking. Maybe the back thread in the frame was already worn, causing the ratling noise of the clamp on the frame. Since the bushing itself was glued and cannot rattle. No idea how to fix that! I tested a new bolt, also didnt hold anymore😞.

g i found the problem, it’s the shock mounts (Suspension Strut Mount, Incl. Bearing) so i had brand new bilstein b8 shocked professionally installed with new shock mounts in the front, and after about 6months the front end made a knocking rattle noise. so i jacked up the passenger side and took off the wheel and grabbed hold of the shock and found it was moving when i put some force, in the engine bay looking at the shock mounts it would move around and it was touching the metal of the chassis, and when going over bumps it would make that knocking sound. so i called my suspension installers and brought it back for them to look at and they told me that the bolts holding the shocks in place was slightly too loose and that caused them to run away the yellow powder coating which gave them more Play to move around which made them loose and caused the shocks to knock when touching the chassis. so they tightened the bolts and everything was perfect. simple fix

Felt your pain, couple years back on my Skoda I replaced the drop links cause of a knock that couldn’t be found anywhere anyway they didn’t fix it, eventually discovered the brake caliper had pulled threads on top mount so rattled/knocked over bumps. Fixed that and all was well, then 3 months later same thing ie knocking, no play anywhere so replaced drop links with genuine parts, and fixed. The initial moog links had very slight play when taken off car and had lasted only 6k.

its not surprising calipers/discs can get overlooked when we consider the amount of bars, links, rubber joint housings / bushings that can cause rattles on the suspension system.

Thanks so much for posting this - I’m having the same trauma. My 2017 insignia is exactly identical in setup to this and it’s crazy. My car has a subtle clunk going over bumps and having changed every other suspension part it must be these bushes. My theory is the metal sleeve embedded inside the rubber is what is causing the noise. I’ve ordered poly bushes which I’m hoping will be easier to fit and be quieter for longer. Thanks again 👍

Comment 2, I like the how-to style of some of your vids (as a person who has scanned KZread many times for them lol). You could do with adding a camera to watch from the background even if it's just for time-lapse, then it shows the struggle an F's, B's an C's proving what you show in the closeups. I'm probably not conveying what I mean very well, if you have a look at M539 restorations (?) And Salvage rebuilds UK you'll get what I mean. Great stuff so far though, love the Sierra an the red range rover well I checked the back of the sofa and it said no 😔

Hi! Good video! My (our) Astra probably need two new bushings on the anti-roll bar as shown in this video. Removal of the anti-roll links is a good tip! I will do that to on both sides. I took a "overview" the other day. I think it's possible to reach the right bushing from the top, between the engine and the torpedo wall. Maybe? What do you think about that? The batterybox and the windscreen washer tank makes this impossible on the right side. I hope this makes sense. I'm not too good in writing English:-)

@@Roverturbo on my channel you can see few videos of mine astra and brakes how they klunking. My best man is mechanic and he solved that problem by adding a spring on pads so now they are not rattling aor making any noise. But I still hear ratling while driving on road with small waves. And yes my best man told me shocks can make noise, he said they will not leak but piston will get some space and will make noise somehow

Well that seemed more hassle than you had planned on. Is that replacement wishbone full of chineesium? I replaced a gearbox mount on a mk7 transit that was made of chineesium it lasted two weeks an snapped. I waited from 8pm until 4am for recovery by the AA it was early December so I was really impressed, Not! Lesson learned never buy things made from chineesium.
