2014 / 2015 Triumph Rocket III * All Smoke and No Mirrors

The most powerful production motorcycle in the world is big, and big fun. No Harley can touch this machine for performance of any kind. At half the price, it's a no brainer.

I just sold my 2007 Triumph Rocket III Tourer. Thank God that bike has a seat with back rest / lumbar for driver. Sometimes at launch from a stop the Rocket wants to leave you behind. The acceleration will always leave you grinning and other cruisers jealous. Oh, sold mind 07 to buy a newer Rocket III :) .

Great summary of an outstanding bike. I bought the same model and changed the cans and mirrors but otherwise stock. Now about 11,000 miles, having ridden in all weathers and through mountain passes etc., this bike is absolutely brilliant. The bike fits me like a glove but I am over 6ft and in reasonable shape. Problems if you can't plant your feet.

My handle is MrTriumphRocket and I`m British so obviously that is the bike I ride. I`m 62 years old and I`m only 165 pounds in weight. The guy who said he`s not man enough for this bike I can understand. But after 46 years riding YOU tell the bike what to do, not the other way round. The guy riding on this video is a really smooth rider. Enjoyed it very much. Cool.

Great video! Here on Oahu there are maybe 5-6 R3's so I get tons of "What the heck is that?" questions and comments. We have *one* Triumph dealership on this island (they sell Kawis and Harleys too) and they don't even keep a Rocket on their showroom floor (Salesman: "Well, it is kind of an acquired taste bike...") Also, thank you for the timely delivery on parts I've ordered from you! 😎 Morgan in Kailua

Its not a bike for mummy"s boys. But it is not the heaviest bike out there, the big Kawasaki, the Harlwy Ultra thingy and the Goldbling are all 400kgs+. My Rocket is 375kg with nearly all the optional extras and a 1/3 of a tank. The Rocket engine is also very restrictive in stock form. You can easily conjure up another 30hp with a filter mod ,exhaust mod and a retune . Changing out the low compression pistons ,a new set of cams and some head work can give you 240hp,approx double the factory output. Its also handles a lot better than it should for its weight and size with good ground clearance and bigger brakes than most cruisers this size. You can even sharpen the handling by adding some good quality front and rear suspension components. Its a tall guys bike which is refreshing after trying bikes that leave a 6 footer feeling cramped. The big tyres and LWB make this bike really at home on less than perfect roads at high speed. It does a 1000klms a day with ease.

I've had the bike now for 4 years and know how to ride it. It ticks over great, with no missing and has an even sound, like the one on this video. I even put back the original cans, hoping to get better MPG, but heck no! Still guzzles juice. I guess I will have to live with it, but any advice on this is welcome.

Cal Moto Thanks for that Cal. Although looking around on line for Rocket consumption I see no one reporting that kind of return of 45 mpg for a rocket. I wish I had somewhere near that though. The best I've had is 30 mpg and around town I only get 22 mpg, and I don't do jack rabbit starts either, just take my time. Its been into a Triumph dealer at Chesterfield, they tinkered with it under diagnostics, paid them £75 for the job. Went on a long run a week later and still no improvement on fuel, and yet the bike runs smooth as silk. I wish I had the know how to fiddle with the engine myself, but I don't. Thinking about buying something to plug to the computer lead that talks to the bikes settings, something to do with the bike setting its self up for my average riding styles I understand.

I have a 2014 Rocket iii roadster, my owners manual states that it should get(after broken in) 22-25 mpg in town and 28-30 highway. You can improve the horsepower, torque and mpg by simply replacing the stock air filter to a k&n air filter. It might give you a few miles more per gallon. The bikes mpg will improve after 12,000 -15,000 miles. Anything under 20,000 miles is still considered the break in period and will drink fuel like crazy. Also, investing in an after market exhaust system might help with mpg as long as it isn't a high performance system. But for 80-100 dollars you can just get the k&n filter to help. As far as the size....... If you know how to ride correctly, you will never dump it. The touring and the classic aren't balanced as well as the roadster. The roadster is very well balanced and even feels pretty light compared to my last two bikes. I had two kawi vulcans, one was a 1700 voyager and the other was a Vulcan 2053cd vtwin limited edition. Both very heavy bikes and not as nimble as the triumph rocket iii roadster. The roadsters performance is far more superior than any other motorcycle I've ever ridden however it definitely lacks in comfort. Investing in some highway bars and pegs and upgrading to a more comfy seat will greatly improve comfort during long rides. If you do happen to dump it, make sure you squat and press you back up against the seat and push with your legs, not your back. If the kickstand is on the other side, make sure it's up. If you slowly push it up it should just settle nicely on the kickstand. If the kickstand is under the bike repeat the same process except when you have the bike almost straight up, try to hold it there for a second while you use one foot to kick the stand down. I've never dumped a bike myself but I've helped many riders pick up there's bikes using this method. But definitely invest in crash bars, this will help prevent the bike from laying to far flat on the ground and will make it easier to pick up. I hope this helps, good luck!!!! 😃😃

I think the Yamaha edges the Triumph in horse power, but the Rocket has the torque. You could use a Rocket III to pull out an almond orchard:).

Cal Moto not doubting the torque or power but all the test articles and comparison articles put the vmax ahead. I'm a fan of the rocket, I ride a valkyrie.

Different bike altogether. Try riding a Vmax 1000klms on not so good roads. The Vmax gets 200klms from a tank,my R3 regularly gets 350klms if I let it run to empty.

I bought a Thunderbird but wish I had decided to pay a little more and get the Rocket. On the Highway and at top gear (6th for the Thunderbird), I can comfortably cruise along at 55 mph. By comfortably I mean at like 2,500 rpm. Any more and the cruiser feels like it's straining. It's just really loud and annoying. But at 2,500, it's just thumping along in a nice rhythm. You can feel the thumping and it's almost relaxing. I feel like I can just ride all day. Any higher in revs and the bike feels like it's vibrating out of control. 3,000 isn't too bad maybe even 4,000 but it's noticeably unsweet as at 2,500 or lower in rpm. And the worst part of all this? At 55mph all the cars are passing me. I try to get on the diamond lane and some guy passes me giving me the finger. This is where I'm hoping the Rocket can remedy. Does it hold steady at 70 mph in top gear at 2,500 rpm or less?

I should know this off hand but I think my Rocket runs around 3000 at 70 mph. However it certainly doesnt feel like its over reving, its just as smooth as if you were doing 55. Ive been on it for 11 hours straight doing 75 to 85 most the time and didnt have any concerns. It would have been great if it had a 6th gear since it has plenty of power.

The Ninja zx14r has a lot more horsepower (about 208, Rocket 3 is about 146) but a lot less torque (about 113 lb-ft, Rocket 3 is about 163 lb-ft). The Ninja is built for higher revs and is very smooth there. The Rocket 3 can be ridden with less shifting to keep the revs up.

Doubling up in a lane at the light is one of the reasons why so many of us on bikes get no respect. It's a single lane and what the driver of the car feels is.......he's not getting the respect he deserves. Give no respect....get none.

You sit in traffic like a dummy when you can easily squeeze in between? We don't need guys like you on our side. Ridiculous to expect him not to "squeeze" through that 5 foot gap. Why would a car feel disrespected if his commute is not affected in the slightest?

i just sold my 2014 rocket, they are fast compared to a Harley yes and have infinitely better handling and brakes but they are not easy to ride at sustained high speed due to the naked cruiser riding position where your body catches the wind. They are a nice looking bike but overall the riding experience wasn't that good, the rear shocks are crap and will send shock waves up your spine on any decent bump, couple this with having your head ripped off and arms stretched every time you go fast...just my opinion. So far as the power and torque goes, they might have truck-like torque but they also are as heavy as a truck and the horsepower isn't high by modern standards
