2013 Mercedes-Benz GL350 vs Lexus GX460 Off-Road Mountain Mashup Review

( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL350 Bluetec and the 2013 Lexus GX460 are both luxurious 7 seater family haulers that can certainly go off-road. However that where the similarities end. Under the hood of the Mercedes is a V-6 turbocharged diesel engine while under the hood of the Lexus is a more traditional gasoline powered V-8. Of course we wanted to know not just how well the brand new 2013 Mercedes GL compares to the Lexus when it comes to ride and handling but perhaps more importantly how the Mercedes compares of-road when the going very muddy. You see the Lexus is based on one of Toyota's most off road worthy vehicles...the Land Cruiser. So how did the big Merc do? Check out this off-road Mountain Mash-up Review to find out.

I have a 2014 GX 460 Luxury, Best SUV I have ever purchased. I have been through Infiniti QX80, ML350, X5 and MDX. I don't care what these jokers say. I have been living with the Lexus GX 460 for few years and I know it is worth every dollar, 52K miles and not a single issue. The ride is much better than BMW X5 and little better than Mercedes ML350, both of them were full of electrical bugs. I also have a 1998 Land Cruiser with 233K miles (four issues since day one- 1.)ABS unit, which I rebuilt for less than $100 2.)alternator, replaced for $300 3.)Starter, replaced for $300 4.) valve cover gasket, replaced for less than $200

People who date n marry the merc ...ohter people feel sorry for because of all the issues...therebis always drama..after a while people get sick of all the issues. The lexus is like ur cute neighborhood girl with not makeup..not very pretty but sexy as hell because of her personality. She can do things very well..never complain about how difficult like is with u. She just love u and will take care of u as u get old. she lloks better with no makeup on..merc needs makeup to be attractive. I had the ML and the X5 and man it had a lot of electrical problems but both engines was awesome...but a lot of visits at the dealership! I don't have the the GX but my brother has one and it has been problem free for 7 years and counting! Most likely I'll be getting one soon . Any other suggestions? People say the Lexus GX is boring but I can tell you this. I would rather drive a boring, V8 with old school technology, and a reliable vehicle than bringing in an ML or an X5 to the dealership! And my brothers GX is a beast in and around the fire roads of SoCal and isolated camp sights:)

If mercedes reliable why depreciation value is so big? Go to any junk yard, take a pressure cylinder gauge, most toyota will be fine or excellent condition, do that to germany engine cars Then we have to admit, most swap engine cars in the world, not only performance engine but all class from workhorse engine to performance engine will be toyota, in here even 20 years old 1KZTE diesel toyota still priced at $2000, and 1HD-T still at $5000

  • @iggibars

So, you chose a car because of less maintenance or cost. That alone is a fine reason, but you took it a way bit too far with that analogy. I guess you must also rent your house, and not buy one, since buying one means you are responsible for all repairs and upkeep needed on that house. If not, you're a hypocrite!! If reliability is of KEY importance, we would all be driving a Camry or Accord, but some people have the means to drive what they WANT to drive. But you choose to put them down for their decision. That says a lot about you and the way you think. I looked at the GX. It might be quiet(as are all SUVs it competes with), but it drives and handles like complete shit on the road, and comes NOWHERE near close to handling as well as the Mercedes(or any other German rival for that matter) at moderate speeds and emergency maneuvers. It's good offroad, but are you buying this to drive it only offroad? Highly doubt it. I drive over 20k miles a year, and have never driven as much with any car before in my life as I have with my current Mercedes. It's damn near bulletproof, drives like a tank glued to the ground, and has completely run circles over all the comparable cars I've owned from Japan and US. If reliability or expense is the only metric you use to determine if a car is good, I know your ability to differentiate the merits of a certain car has gone down the toilet.

Older video and vehicles - but I just test drove these two vehicles back to back (while in the process of selecting and buying a used vehicle). In my test drives I found the GL350 rather underpowered once at highway speeds, while the GX460 had plenty of power. Around town and at very low speeds the GL350 had plenty of grunt due to its low end torque but the GX460 was also perfectly fine at low speeds too. My biggest gripe with the GL (and I do mean the GL) was lack of power (another concern was maintenance cost), while the GX had plenty of power for me. How is it that Roman and Nathan came to the exact opposite conclusion? Was this review done at high elevations where the turbo might help the GL compensate for the more powerful naturally aspirated GX? If so does the GX really loose that much that lack of power becomes a major issue?

I've been buying Toyota's for the past 3 decades and I ALWAYS buy them new and run them for 10 years and either sell them with 30% residual value or keep them. Lexus is no different. Still own a 97 4Runner. 300,000 miles is routine for these Yota/Lexus SUVs. Reason enough why I buy them and not lease them.

The Fast Lane Car Do you know what means DPF? It stands for Diesel Particular Filter. Most modern diesel cars have that. And it works fine. As long as you drive your car or SUV on a long distance,so it can regenerate itself. You drive your "future diesel car" in city and you end up with DPF replacement, which cost fortune. Nobody drives big and heavy SUV"s for a long enough distances. Toyota engineers are not stupid. They have plenty of diesel engines, and trust me,if they wanted to,they would have thrown one in there. They had and still have issues with the DPF of their D4D engine. Do a research and use your brain before you make review.

I wish people would consider repair bills before saying how great a vehicle is. Most vehicles are great during the warranty period and mileage. Try contacting a Toyota or Mercedes on something as simple as a lost key. I know somebody who lost the only key to her a car. I know it is not smart, but some people are just that way. Not only does she have to pay $250+ to have a key made, she has to tow the car to the dealer. According to the dealer, the new key is not guarantee to work resulting in higher fees. Don't take my word for it. Call Toyota and Mercedes to find out for yourself. FYI: Most Lexus and Toyota parts are interchangeable with Toyota at a much lower cost. Before paying $1500 to have a timing belt done at Lexus, you can have the same work done for half the price at a Toyota dealer.

Same thing in Australia, diesel is usually about the same price as 98 premium unleaded, which is about $1.55-1.65AUD/L while the standard 91 unleaded is only $1.40AUD/L. Although most cars nowadays require 95 or better anyway. I know my car is 98 minimum which kinda sucks. I think diesels and hybrids are our short term future, and EV's and hydrogen cars are the long term future. I'm going to miss that lovely petrol powered sound.

OK so the GX460 is based on the LandCruiser Prado and the LX570 is based on the LandCruiser. Also I believe they kept the side opening tailgate because the Toyota LandCruiser Prado has an externally mounted spare wheel, requiring a side opening tailgate. However for some reason when they took off the spare wheel, they did not redesign the hinges.

ok let me clear things up the Lexus GX is based on the Toyota 4runner but uses the 4.7 V8 that was used on the 4th generation Toyota 4Runner and the 2007 Toyota Land Cruiser it is not based on the current 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser because it uses its current 5.7 V8 which is shared with the Lexus LX and the Toyota Sequoia. No, the GX460 is based on the 4-Runner. However, the GX is called the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado outside of the states. I prefer the GX over the GL, the GX is a TRUE SUV.

Am I missing something? I just checked and MB USA says GL350 has 210 hp and 400 lb/ft of torque - where are you guys getting your numbers from? Also, GL is said to hit 60 in 9.1 seconds and GX does the same in 7.8, yet I never heard anything about the Benz being 'underpowered'. Unless you're saying that GX has super peaky hp and torque curves, but I've seen Toyota V8 curves and they aren't peaky. So I'm a little confused by this review.

+vicarouza it definitely is, in Aus there is a luxury car tax that is 33% of the amount over $64000. So it effectively doubles the price of the car to own a luxury car based on the luxury car tax. That's why I'm so amazed that the American market has things 'cheap' when compared to the Australian market.

True, but because the infrastructure is in place, it won't be as hard to make it so that it does replace gas. Although gas stations haven't been converted, there are hybrid gas/hydrogen stations. By standard combustion motors, of course I didn't mean taking any old gas engine and filling it with hydrogen. Much like the diesel engine, a specific hydrogen engine will have to be developed. Anyways, hydrogen can also deliver energy through motors, achieved by mixing in water with the compressed H.

Not true. The Benz is the nicer driving vehicle but the Lexus is the more reliable option hence why I said LEASE a Benz. Why would I waste time and money leasing a Lexus when it would make more sense for me to buy it outright vs. getting a new one every 3 years when it will be reliable for another 10? GX is NOT based on Toyota Land Cruiser, it's based on Toyota Prado and it's actually a middle-size SUV even for European standards. Yes, I know it's a mashup but it's a shame that Prado stands next to GL which is QX56's and Lexus LX (Toyota Land Cruiser) competitor ;). Prado is really high but it's short and not very wide what leads to many, many rollovers - it even rolled over in a side crash test... In fact it's even smaller than Touareg, X5 or XC90.

  • @jeremyshaw1

Well, to be more accurate, both are based off the Land Cruiser Prado, so is the FJ Cruiser. The older 4runners are based on the Taco. All four cars are now only made in Japan, afaik.

So really the Lexus GX is based on the 4th generation 4Runner V8 and probably uses the same frame as the 5th generation 4runner (im not sure) but the V8 was on the 2007 Land Cruiser so it does have some type of relation that it was mechamically based on the 2007 Land Cruiser's V8 but is not based on the 2008-2013 Toyota Land Cruiser V8

Do I really need to elaborate? An incredibly acclaimed series of SUV's ranging from military grade to luxury for the people. Let's not forget that this is only in the front of off-roading. Such

Honestly for the Mercedes I wouldn't touch it new. Let someone else fix all the problems that are going to come. Then the quality isn't that good. The CUV is built in Alabama. Now if it was a G wagon which is hand built in Austria then it would be a different story. I would risk and try a new one just because the resale value on the G wagon is great. The money to maintain it will be well worth it. I can't put the same money in a GL350 at all. A 2002 G500 still sells used for around 21-28K which is phenomenal for keeping a vehicle for a long while. For the same price the 2009 model will fall in the the same category which isn't good. And those vehicles are not cheap off the lot either. Its not worth keeping it too long at all. The lexus holds its value pretty well. The quality of the vehicle is good. I do say toyota tends to tune down their engines and in the suvs the redline is set low by the computer (between 5k to 5.9k rpm). Its ok just because their engines are pretty much are bulletproof when it comes to any problems. Getting 300k miles by just doing basic maintenance is a cake walk for the lexus. In a mercedes thats a different story.

Fair enough, although hydrogen refilling stations and a basic infrastructure have already been established since 2008, so the step won't be as big as it seems. And if it's more explosive, then technically it can be used for more power in a standard combustion engine, outputting much more power than an electric equivalent. Eventually, we'll find ways to make the process cheaper, and by that time the battery could become phased out. I mean, it's already not as effective as gas engines...
