Nobody will care but my uncle is a producer for CBS Sports and he was the one who chose to use that camera angle during the kickoff return. I think he won an Sports Emmy award for it.

@@saabrian it was a hilarious quip from one of the commentators but not a deliberate effort on Saban's part to throw his players under the bus. He had big guys out there to protect the field goal attempt. He thought it was going to be the last play of the fourth quarter so even if his team missed the kick it would be a safe call. No one in their right mind was banking that Auburn would return it the whole length of the field for a touchdown.

What doesn’t get enough appreciation here is how Verne and Gary just let the moment breathe after Davis scores. For over a minute there’s no commentary, just the sights, sounds, and faces of disbelief in the stadium. Kudos to them, because many announcers would just throw in their two cents and talk over it all.

I’m an Auburn fan, and this was the greatest moment I’ve seen so far. It was amazing. I remember going to school the following Monday and all the Alabama fan kids were all pissed off and sour! “He stepped out of bounds! Watch this video!” And showing everyone this video of the run that someone had edited/photoshopped to show the receiver had clearly stepped out of bounds. Making every excuse in the world. It was a great day to be an auburn fan.

Funny story. I was watching this and I was alone. Still learning the rules of football, my grandfather had the game on but left the room for about 30 seconds. I watched the play, and he came back. I just said "Auburn scored the winning touchdown", thinking this happened in almost every game of football. He said "What?" about forty times. He then watched the replay and the gape of his mouth had to be at least three feet open. Edit: He sadly passed away a couple months after I wrote this comment. RIP Giddo 1928-2017

They were stressing that nobody thought of a run back possibility, but I honestly did. When 'Bama decided to go for the field goal I said to my wife, who just happened to be in the room, "Auburn can win this on a run back." And it happened. One of those truly great moments to relive. ***** Actually, the only thing the winner of this game was entitled to was a bid to the SEC conference championship game, nothing more. Still has to play a good Missouri team for the automatic bid to a BCS bowl game. The previous winners of Iron Bowls to Natty games is irrelevant, logically speaking. Nice try, though.

droidean Missouri was no challenge, so the SEC was a guaranteed title. The 06 NC doesn't even compare to what the Iron bowl has produced in the past few years. The Iron bowl is never irrelevant, it's the greatest rivalry in college football and one of the best in all of sports.

I can't imagine anyone expected him to make the field goal at that distance, but Foster's last field goal attempt was blocked and caught, which is exactly what they needed to avoid. The coach probably figured most likely, the kick goes wide and we go into OT, best case he makes a miracle kick and we win, worst case it goes short and we stop the return and go into OT. The real blame here is the fact that Bama's entire line had no one that could stop that return run. Even worse: that poor kind was what, 5 yards away from making probably the best kick of his entire career?
