I have a cummins. BUT I can say if you want a motor that you can abuse or work hard. Get a Detroit...... you can NOT hurt them. Drivers will know what I mean.

I have driven with both engines. Both have done well and never failed on me (it's usually the supporting items/hoses around the engine that fail). I find the DD15 accelerates quickly, is somewhat lacking in jake brake power, and is well suited to high rpms (1500-2000). The ISX15 I find is a bit slower to accelerate but has more umph to keep its speed up hills. There is no competition that can hold a candle in terms of the jake brake power of the cummins, and is well suited to low to mid rpms (1300-1700). Both engines were 550hp, both had the smartshift 13 spd, both were in the same model truck. I figure its a pretty fair comparison.

One more-we pulled the readout from a market chain here in L.A. doing regional work with DD13. At 246,000mi, no manual regen, averaging 7.1mpg. One of the trucks had a broken exhaust flex pipe. I stuck my finger inside and wiped-NO black at all inside the exhaust pipe!

In Italy the most motors have 500 hp but as it is full of mountain ranges, see the Apennines and the Alps, and the loads are 44 tons, are ubiquitous Big Engines 560, 620 and 730 Scania (8v). The big Volvo 750 hp are not very common because they cost too much and consume a sea of diesel. If they sold the Cummins isx 15c euro 5 would be the best sellers

I work with L.A. Freightliner in new truck sales and we sell both Cummins ISX15 and Detroit DD engines. Not only are the Detroits lighter and have better low rpm torque, they regularly get .2-.4mpg better fuel mileage then Cummins. We have never seen a Cummins out fuel a Detroit in any horsepower rating. This is why the big fleets are ordering 1,000's of these engines. And now with the Cascadia Evolution with the DT12spd automated transmission, we had a demo truck-driven by the company-do 4 round trips from L.A. to Bakersfield and back averaging 8mpg! I had another LTL company go from L.A to Fresno and back (65,000lb) averaging 8.5mpg! Now figure what you're mileage is compared to this-course this is at 62mph max. But-you can't get great fuel mileage and drive 75mph also. Good Luck, TomC

Look at MBE 4000 we called it moe better engine. 450 HP peak torque @ 1000 RPM, and a big pain in the butt to repair. You can't even remove the oil pan without dropping the front axle. You in frame it, your there for along time. It is a knock off of the 55 Series leaking antifreeze under the head gaskets every time you turn around. 6 individual heads, 4 head bolts per head. After you assemble it you have to go test drive it, bring it back in the shop re torque the heads again. That engine didn't stay around very long. But if you like chrome the valve covers are chrome plated, just like some of the first 500 HP Series 60 Chrome package.

Tom Christman I for got to mention the 55 series engine, yuck man, it came out before the Moe Better Engine. The MBE4000 & the MBE900, I do not miss repairing those engines. Instead of a single ECM, it is like the DDEC 1 a two box system. lol. lol.

Tom Christman The EPA rules killed the MBE4000 and the Series 60. It's was more practical to design one engine that replaced both. MBE4000 was absolutely no loss. The Series 60 was one of the best truck engines ever made.

I operate a Cummins equipped Prostar running mostly east of the rockies pulling loads normally around 78000lb. The torque band pulls great (shifting on hills at around 1100rpm) and I average around 7.7mpg. Cummins is a good engine.

I drove a series 60 DD for a little while but was so long ago I forget a lot other than it did feel smooth and enjoyed the power, I believe it was 475 and had a 18spd. I had only drove two other trucks at the time and both had 86 350hp cats in them, so the 475 was a lot different. I just got a job and the truck I am driving is a Kenworth with a ISX15 485 turned up to 550hp. I enjoy it so far, but sucks not being able to try something to compare it with. I will start paying close attention to fuel milage and see how it is doing.

I have a 48' flat spread axle.I do get better than 6 MPG with it . Normal speed for me is 60-62 mph. I progressive shift, keep the motor out of boost as much as possible. My set up is a ISX 450, 13 spd OD with 373 rears. I am planning on going with a PDI big boss turbo, intake & exhaust Man, and an ECM reprogram. Will definitely improve mpg, plus will pull hills a lot easier. I like the 9900I , & have no plans on selling it. All the new emissions crap scares me, I like to keep it simple!

I'm an owner operator I own a 2012 Western Star 4900 SB. My truck has a 600 horsepower Detroit 2050 torque. I haul loads around 61000 kg. I'm very happy with the truck and the engine, I have no trouble keeping up or even passing the Cummins especially on steep hills. My average fuel economy is 4.91 miles to the gallon.

the three axle stepdeck i'm getting next month can take 85,000 lbs in 10 feet of the deck's space. that's your volvo with a trailer and 45,000 lb load. to move that i need horse power. a 600 hp engine doesn't mean the fuel mileage will be bad. it depends how yo drive it. but i'd rather pay a slight MPG penalty for having a 600 hp engine than drive a gutless truck with 435 HP. no offence.

In Australia the new Cummins ISXe5 and Signature e5 have been out since February 2013 and are becoming very popular as EGR, understandably, seems to be very hated over here. Cummins has done extensive testing on them before they were put on the market and they have gotten a lot of positive feedback about them. They have gone back to a wastegate turbo, single camshaft as its now got common rail direct injection and has no EGR, just an SCR/adblue exhaust system. Drivers I have talked to say it runs significantly cooler to the ISX EGR which is a huge plus for our hot climate and is a lot better on fuel usage too. Detroit's are not as popular over here as Cummins or Cat are. The ISX EGR can be a good engine if its well maintained, an absolute dog if not. But the ISXe5 is a huge improvement, it seems Cummins pulled their finger out and made a good engine again.

Hi Sergie, I have a 2005 9900I with a ISX cummins 468K miles. I am very happy with the ISX. I think when considering the DD16 vs the ISX , you need to remember that your cruising speed rpm is not at 1100, it was closer to 1300 ( the new 9900I you specd. ) . I think the ISX will be closer to max torque at that specd rpm. One more thing Sergie. No engine brakes like an ISX, it is amazing! Hope this helps. Keith

Tom my truck is a 2010 and it was a fleet spec'd truck.. Big mistake there buying it. But Freightliner gave me a book with all the ecm programs for a dd15. 2 months ago and it was from 09/16 model trucks. And I don't see a lower torque spec'd program that low.. Are u sure its not a dd13 engine. I know a lot of fleets are opting for the smaller engine.. And your right on speed. It kills your mileage. I run 67/68 normally and have achieved over 7 with my dd15. of course weight, grades, speed and wind direction all plays a factor..

sergie you have to think about after you have run the motor in. they have a weight advantage yes. but that is only 100 rpm more for the some toruqe right? a bigger bore motor will always rev less but over time will use more fuel as the compression starts to fade. we have 15 litre motors and run up to 43.50 tonne,no problem.

Hello Sergei Another Great video--you know better than I, but Cummins is much easier to get that DD--daimler doesnt sell DD to anyone as you know but FL and Western Star. I dont think you can get DD anywhere else. Cummins can get many places, and is a proven product --whether 300lbs in weight or 100 rpm difference in max torque is a big enough diiference ??? I would go with the KW 800W with ISX 600 and 13 or 18 speed and whistle to the bank. lol

Probably both of them will treat you well, but just as a comparison of trucks for tough applications, Camex Equipment sells trucks directly to the oilfields of Alberta and probably NWT and the Yukon also. Of all their trucks for sale on Truck Paper, only one page worth (25 trucks or less) have Detroit engines, and most of those are Series 60. Caterpillar powered trucks take up five pages, and Cummins takes up seven pages, including some picker trucks that cost over half a million dollars.

Detroit is coming out with a DD15 with 400hp @ 1600rpm & 1750lb/ft torque @ 975rpm only available with the DT12 direct drive with 2.41 rear ratio. This is for those that want maximum fuel mileage and will keep the speed below 65mph. Combine that with a 6X2 with the Meritor Fuel Lite air suspension compensating traction control, and we'll be seeing close to 10mpg trucks. Anyone that believes that Cummins can get that kind of mileage (we sell both) is not figuring correctly.

The reason why the manufactures are pushing downspeed speced trucks is to reduce hp/tq at the engine and still get an equivalent to the wheels. The blue I Detroit Diesel integrated drivetrain turned out to be a dog for my old employer Metropolitan Trucking. They have since gone to 455/1750 engines, DT12 direct drive transmissions, and 2.43 ratios.

Agreed there will be no other engine that will come close to what the non-egr series 60. I personally think detroit are buildt and engineer better than tbe cummins. One big difference is the liner set up having half liner cooled by coolant and half by oil that splatters in the cranckcase, compare to detroits that liner is completely cooled by coolant therefore having a much better internal temperature controls. To touch bases on the dd platforn engine. Since they first came out there have been a numerous amount of improvements that have not dissapointed. DETROIT DIESEL POWER like no other.

The new engines right now are killing companies and owner operators. one must wait for the bugs to be fixed or for the emission systems to be scraped (which is unlikely) Either way good luck!

    let's see ... 1400 / 62 * 60 = 1354 RPM; so you must be doing 60 MPH at 1354 RPM. 1354 / 0.74 (top gear ratio - I"m assuming) / 497 revs per mile (reg 22.5 tires?) = 3.68; so I think you have either 3.70 or 3.73 UNLESS you run on 24.5 tires.

I can't help you with finding the best specs for a heavy haul truck. I do have a rule of thumb that if you drive a 40 ton max permitted truck, you should never spec it to run out of the torque band while at highway speed. The DD15 and DD16 engines follow a horsepower/torque tuning that is designed to give near or above 90% of torque from 925 to 1450 rpms. My 2015 Crashcadia has a 505/1750 engine, direct drive DT12, and 2.54:1 ring and pinions. I want to drive at 70 as much as possible in 70 to 80 mph zones. I know from driving other Evolution models that my spec is falling flat on its face. If I get another Daimler truck it must have a 13 or18-speed manual transmission and run 65 at 1200 or 1300 rpm and 70 at 1300 or 1400 rpm. That will keep my below the die out of the torque band that is found at 1450.

The most reliable engine I've ever seen is the 3406B Caterpillar with mechanical fuel injection. It is so reliable, Caterpillar is still making the 3406C model still with mechanical fuel injection for pump, generators for third world countries. This is why I'm using my '85 Kenworth with 3406B jacket aftercooled 400hp for my motorhome.

It's not about what mpg you get out of this engines...it's about how long can they stay away from repair shops...when it comes to DD engines....I don't think that they'll ever make an engine like the pre emission 12.7 series 60 again....in 2003 after the death of the two legendary engines the DD12.7..and n14 celect plus AKA Redtop....CAT became the undisputed king of engines...not because of good MPG's but they were allergic to repair shops.... you make money by staying on the road and NOT by getting few more MPG's...so CAT is discontinued....ISX15 is the one that can replace the KING...

Hi There, Serghei is right on few aspects but no all. From the point of view as O/O he now less weight= less fuel , more power also mean less fuel ( you don`t pull on your engine all in when hauling big loads)You always have that reserve of power on big engine that the less powerful one. Of course Detroit is a brand new engine ( Big improvement is the fuel management ( BOSH) which will work fantastic in Europe but not in North America just because here are not sufficient trained MECHANICS not TECHNICIANS also are different driving conditions at temps. and distances comparing with Europe. He say will like better low RPM on the engine but this is wrong 100% . Just think Lower RPM mean more friction = more heat = more wear on the equipment and more fuel. It do not mater what RPM are you running what mater is the load that you put on the engine. Of course Detroit with the BOSH fuel management will be more fuel efficient as a Cummins or a CAT because is more driver friendly ( To read newbie drivers or company drivers) I noticed most drivers think lower RPM = less fuel this is not truth . I make an experiment with a friend of mine we work at same company and loaded together same load ( weight) to same delivery location . He have a 2008 Volvo with a D 16 ,500 HP Iswift 12 spd. transs and 3.25 RR. and I have a 2002 T2000 with C 15 (6NZ) 475 HP (Tromont CAT rebuilt)13 spd. and 3.70 RR, we top up our tanks when we left Canada and we refill in Dallas TX . I put 40 GL less in the CAT than he put in the D 16 Volvo. My friend is a O/O for since 2008 and he purchased the truck brand new. I purchased mine used at auction. He is running 1200 RPM at 65 MI / H and I am running 1450 RPM at 65 MI / H. Sow not all the time is about the engine , big impact is the foot behind the steering wheel. Happy New Year !!

I ended up buying a 2015 Mack CXU-613 with a 13L engine. It has 505 HP, and 1860 torque (!) in all gears. I put in a 18 speed manual Eaton and the rears are 3.91. The truck pulls okay for a 13L equipped truck. All my latest videos are about this truck. I spec'ed a Western Star but it was almost 20K more than the Mack.

Detroit getting lighter, possibly due to use of too much aluminum parts. When comes to diesel cast iron and steels are the way to go.

  • @williamdelarge2491

    @williamdelarge2491

It doesn't matter as much to use pure steel/cast since these Diesel engines always run liners for jugs so they can get away with a lighter alloy block. Now I'm not a lover of alloys likes aluminum for any engine.

the dd15 isn't really a detroit engine, it is designed by diamlar not general motors, they use the detroit name because it is well known in the usa for fuel mileage and reliability. the cummins Isx 15 is the most powerful engine I have ever driven, I would not buy a truck with the 400hp 1450ft lbs of torque isx cummins they are setup for economy and do not pull as well as the dd15 450hp, and the dd15 gets better fuel economy. but i bet the cummins cost less to repair and is more reliable on the long run.

Detroit Diesel has absolutely nothing to with G.M anymore, they merged with Mercedes like 10-15 years ago last true Detroit was the Series 60 engines. As a diesel technician I am very partial to Cummins due to there dependability, reliability, easy maintenance. Also almost every truck shop in north america carries parts, and has the special tools needed to work on cummins, not sure if the same can be said for these detroits. I would also say very confidently as I have seen from experience that an ISX will outlast anything else on the market today, have worked on many 1 million plus ISX's that have yet to see a major overhaul. If you want real Cummins power get your self a glider with a N14 celect plus 525, rated at 1900 ft-lbs at 1200 with no emissions bull shit. Best truck engine ever built PERIOD!

Roger Penske bought into Detroit Diesel from GM back in 1988 giving him 60% ownership and controlling interest. In year 2000 DaimlerChrysler who owns Freightliner, Mercedes and others purchased all ownership of Detroit Diesel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Diesel I've experience with both of these engines and companies and IMO it's Detroit all the way as long as you ignore the POS Mercedes engines they offered for a while.

+Jacob Roach I'd argue that the N14 was the best "ever" built. I believe the 3406B and E and the 6NZ Caterpillar engines are way beyond the N14. But for the Cummins name alone, I'd agree that the N14 is at the top of their charts.

Detroits like more RPM, cummins can be "lugged." I think the Detroits accelerate quicker, but dont have the torque. As a cummins or CAT. I've driven all 3 engines and CAT has everyone beat on torque. Cummins parts and dealers are more peeve labor, detroit seems to get better fuel economy no matter the HP. I can say no DD16 is out pulling a 550 C15 6NZ cat motor.
