2013-2017 Subaru XV Crosstrek Rear Brake Pad & Rotor Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It's time for rear brakes on my 2013 Subaru Crosstrek XV.
For several weeks I've been hearing a screeching from the rear passenger side brakes.
I almost scheduled an appointment at a local brake shop, but I HATE sitting around at a repair shop waiting for my vehicle to get repaired. I knew I could save a fortune doing this project myself, so that's what I decided to do.
I've done disc brake replacement several times, many years ago, so this was an easy project.
Tools required are mentioned at the beginning of this video.
I didn't mention a C-Clamp, which is one method of compressing the piston back into the caliper.
A large flat blade screwdriver is also needed.
Another method of compressing the piston is with this tool: amzn.to/3GOockc

Eek. I see a couple of entitled/rude comments so I wanted to add another positive one. Thanks for this video! Doing a rear brake job on my 13 Crosstrek and I had to adjust the parking brake to get the rotor off - your video was super helpful! I saw lots of instructions with the rotor still on but it was better to be able to see what’s actually going on behind the rotor the first time around!

Thanks for the tutorial. I replaced wife's rear pads yesterday with help from this video. The rotors were questionable, especially the driver's side, but I left them on since it's an hour to a town with an auto parts store. Test drive went well. Once under the car, it's a pretty easy job. Thanks again.

New sub here. Wow, this is such a helpful video! We typically have this done for us at the shop but after watching this we may need to try doing this on our own next time. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

Thanks for watching. :-) When my front brakes were done, I took it to the dealer because something l kept making this loud chattering and grinding sound on an intermittent basis. I though it was a CV axle. It turned out to be front brakes, and they charged me well over $500 to replace them. I vowed I wasn't going to have a shop do my brakes when the rears needed done after spending so much on the front. It was a pretty easy job since I'm mechanically inclined and I like wrenching on stuff.

@@deltabravo1257 Yeah, brake jobs have been getting increasingly more expensive, lately. It's insane! I'll have to have my sons watch this and see if they want to save some money next time they need new brakes. Thanks again!!!

12:44 also press down on your brake pedal a few times (with the engine running) until it goes stiff again *before* you go driving.

I would be interested in knowing how well the rotors hold up rust-wise after the first winter.

Do you have to adjust the star wheel for the parking brake after you put the new rotor on?

  • @deltabravo1257

    @deltabravo1257

If you have the electric parking brake, this is probably how you need to do it (manually adjust the star wheel). If you have a manual parking brake, pull the handle firmly several times and that adjusts the parking brake.

An ordinary large woodworkers G Clamps works pushing brake pistons back , No need to a buy a specialist tool for this.

Ho My God!! What a bodge job. You should use high temperature grease on relevant brake parts. And according to the Subaru manual you should even put it on the caliper body has well has the shims. If anyone is doing a brake job on a Subaru get a online manual and even they aren't perfect with regards to grease. I did however learn something from this video and that is to get both rear wheels off the ground. And the pushing in of the piston is not in the Subaru manual. Rock On Kid!
